History

The West German military was eager to produce an upgraded tank within the following ten years, even while the Leopard 1 was only coming into service. As a result, in 1963, work on developing MBT-70 began in collaboration with the United States. That being said, it started to become doubtful in 1967 as to when the MBT-70 would actually go into service. As a result, in 1967 the German government gave Porsche, a German business, the task of investigating potential upgrades for the Leopard 1.

The goal of this study, which went by the moniker Vergoldeter Leopard, or Gilded Leopard, was to integrate cutting-edge technology into the Leopard design. An autoloader, a coaxial autocannon, and an independent commander's periscope were fitted as part of the planned modifications. A TV surveillance camera was fixed on an extensible mast, and the anti-air machine gun was controlled from within the car. Cast steel armour was used to optimise the design of the turret and hull, while improvements were made to the suspension, transmission, and engine exhaust vents.
