M109G

Description

The M109G is a rank German tank destroyer with a battle rating of (AB), (RB), and (SB). It was introduced in Update "Kings of Battle".

General info

Survivability and armour

The M109G's armor is only at 32mm, which wont be enough to stop tank rounds, but can protect the crew from machine-gun fire from other tanks or planes. The crew in the turret is very close together, which can make the tank easy to destroy. It does have the transmission and the engine in the front of the hull, which might help against shots directly on the lower front plate.

Notes:

Mobility

The M109G is sufficently fast to allow it to be able to get to a position in time, without being flanked immediately by other, faster tanks. The M109G does feature neutral steering, which allows it to turn in place which helps its agility when turning. The M109G's turning is also decent enough for the job, as it is a tank destroyer.

Armaments

Main armament

Main article: M126 (155 mm)

The 155mm M126 that features on the M109G is a powerful cannon, that is able to destroy most targets it meets, unless they are heavily armored. The High Explosive shell that this tank has, has poor muzzle velocity, but makes it up in explosive mass, having around 9kg of TNT.

Machine guns

Main article: MG3A1 (7.62 mm)

Offensive and anti-aircraft machine guns not only allow you to fight some aircraft but also are effective against lightly armoured vehicles. Evaluate machine guns and give recommendations on its use.

Usage in battles

As the M109G is a tank destroyer, it should be used as such but at a closer range, especially on less hilly maps, due to its low depression at only -3 degrees and low muzzle velocity. It doesnt have much armor to protect itself, but can withstand the most common of machine guns, the 50. cal. It could also be used as a makeshift artillery piece, as the 9kg of explosive allows it to kill light tanks if you get a good hit.

Pros and cons

Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".

Pros:

  • smoke grenades can sometimes help you get behind cover after a shot

Cons:

  • slow turret traverse speed
  • low survivability due to thin armour
  • long reload
  • slow shell velocity and bad optics zoom making it bad for sniping in long distance

History

 Devblog History

Development of the M109 began in the early 1950s under a U.S. program to develop a common chassis for a number of different SPH designs. Upon entering service, the M109 was immediately deployed to the Vietnam War. However, its operational service during the conflict was cut short due to serious mechanical malfunctions which rendered the fleet inoperable. Nonetheless, after being addressed and receiving its first upgrade to the A1 standard, the M109 would continue service with U.S. forces for decades to come, taking part in virtually all military conflicts where U.S. forces were deployed in. Once its design eventually matured, the M109 successfully resisted replacement on multiple occasions and continuously received upgrades until the present day.
