Description

SU-57B
SU-57B

The SU-57B is a BR 3.3 (AB/RB) tank destroyer armed with a 57mm SIS-4 main gun. It features a low profile, good speed (40 km/h) and great ammo penetration for its tier, but a very weak armour on all angles.

It is the first Tank destroyer (TD) available at Tier 3.

History

October 29 1943, the MVTU USSR design office proposed the design of a tank hunter of the class of the 11 tons, propelled by a diesel GMC-71 engine and armed of the 76 mm S-1 or the 57 mm S-1-57 but no instruction concerning its production was not given. To the same moment GAZ continued its work on the hunters of tanks and proposed a GAZ-74b equipped with the 57 mm gun with long barrel, as well as an improved vehicle armed with a 76 mm gun. The model with canon of 57 mm factory GAZ was renamed SU-57b while the one of the factory n°38 was renamed SU-57a to avoid the confusions. The SU-57b passed all the tests with successes but finally was not accepted for the service because of its price and obligation to produce a new diesel engine. The design office of NATI proposed equally its own model of tank hunter armed of the gun of 57 mm strong similar to the GAZ-74, that as it was not accepted for the service.

Combat usage

The SU-57B is purely a tank hunter. With its 57mm ZIS-4 gun, and at a BR of 3,3 it can easily pierce almost any opponent in game.Because of its weak armour it was not capable of engaging too close and had to stay at a medium to long range.

Its APHEBC initial ammunition is effective at piercing enemy armour, but the nest ammo modification is even better with the APHE round (BR-271K).

It also features a HE round that can be unlocked later, but it is preferable to stick with BR-271 or BR-217K rounds as they offer up to 142 mm of penetration which is excellent for its use and BR.

The SU-57B is best played as a sniper, preferably taking advantage of its very low profile (still not as good as the ASU-57 but almost). It excels at shooting from high vantage points or from the sides but must be repositioned after each shot to avoind retaliation fire.

With only 25mm frontal armour at best and 16mm on the side and virtually none on the rear, a single shot would be fatal and leave the crew disabled at best.

It is even susceptible to Heavy MG fire from the sides and rear

Key features

With 72 ammo rounds, the SU-57B has much more ammo than the ZIS-30, allowing it to shoot freely without restriction. However the 6,5 seconds initial reload time can be quite long when facing an opponent à close range. It is adivzed to enhance this reloading time to be more efficient as soon as possible.

Fortunately thanks to its great speed (43 km/h maximum) it can flee quite easily.

It's pretty good reload speed (6,5 seconds) allows this tank to shoot with efficiency.

SU-57B in game

The SU-57B as said earlier is best played as a sniper mode. It is preferable to shoot and reposition immediately after, and it has a simiar playstyle as the ZIS-30 but with less manoeuvrability and more armour.Whule the crew of the ZIS-30 has no protection whatsoever from AA fire and artillery, the SU-57B has some amount of top protection and its crew is inside. However you won't last long is targeted by Medium or Heavy tanks or TD's and it is better to be hidden or under cover.

The SU-57B is sluggish at backwards speed and you will have a hard time countering an opponent behind you. Your best bet is to flee when spotted.

The SU-57B is best played as a sniper support role. Let the main tanks go forward and stay behind them. Pick a good location, preferably high so you can sport enemies from further away, and wait for your prey.

General info

Survivability and armour

Armour is weak. 25mm frontal armour with 16mm on the sides and rear. Any tank of its BR it will face will be able to penetrate. Even Heavy MG fire is dangerous.

It is useless to angle the tank, since it can be penetrated at any angle.

The armour of the SU-57B only offers protection against AA fire and artillery shells and light MG and from ligh armoured cars.

There are 4 crew members and because of the small profile of this tank, any penetration by an enemy round means that most of the crew will be killed or disabled.

Ammo racks are placed on each side, therefore any side shot will result almost certainly as an explosions. The engine is at the rear.

It is better to face the opponent from the front, as it is where the armour is the thickest (25mm).

Mobility

Forward top speed is great but the tank accelerated quite slowly. It will siffer in stiff climbs.

Rear speed is horrible with only 5 km/h maximum, as usually with Russian TD's.

Gun traverse speed is quite slow, so don't expect to be able to shoot a fast moving target if you missed it. Rather, move the tank , which is faster than moving the barrel.

The only positive point is its stopping power. It can stop from 43 km/h to 0 is just under 3 seconds. Apart from that, the SU-57B is very average in terms of mobility, and the ZIS-30 much more mobile.

Armaments

Main armament

Give the reader information about the characteristics of the main gun. Assess its effectiveness in a battle based on the reloading speed, ballistics and the power of shells. Do not forget about the flexibilty of the fire, that is how quickly the cannon can be aimed at the target, open fire on it and aim at another enemy. Add a link to the main article on the gun: {{main|Name of the weapon}}. Describe in general terms the ammunition available for the main gun. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage.

Additional armament

Some tanks are armed with several guns in one or more turrets. Evaluate the additional weaponry and give advice on its use. Describe the ammunition available for additional weaponry. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage. If there is no additional weaponry remove this subsection.

Machine guns

Offensive and anti-aircraft machine guns not only allow you to fight some aircraft, but also are effective against lightly armoured vehicles. Evaluate machine guns and give recommendations on its use.

Usage in the battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Summarize and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list. Do not use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - they have a substitution in the form of softer "inadequate", "effective".

Cons:

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ground vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/historical reference" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/Name-vehicles/historical reference) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to include links to sources at the end of the article.

Media

An excellent addition to the article will be video guides, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
