Survivability and armour

Examine the survivability of the aircraft. Note how vulnerable the structure is and how secure the pilot is, whether the fuel tanks are armoured, etc. Describe the armour, if there is any, and also mention the vulnerability of other critical aircraft systems.

Modifications and economy

Armaments

Offensive armament

Main article: GAU-8/A (30 mm)

The A-10A is armed with:

  • A choice between two presets:
    • 1 x 30 mm GAU-8/A cannon, chin-mounted (1,174 rpg)
    • 1 x 30 mm GAU-8/A cannon + 480 x countermeasures

Suspended armament

The A-10A can be outfitted with the following ordnance:

  • Without load
  • 42 x Hydra-70 M247 rockets
  • 84 x Hydra-70 M247 rockets
  • 84 x Hydra-70 M247 rockets + 2 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles
  • 10 x 500 lb LDGP Mk 82 bombs (5,000 lb total)
  • 12 x 500 lb LDGP Mk 82 bombs (6,000 lb total)
  • 12 x 500 lb LDGP Mk 82 bombs + 2 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles (6,000 lb total)
  • 6 x 2,000 lb LDGP Mk 84 bombs (12,000 lb total)
  • 6 x 2,000 lb LDGP Mk 84 bombs + 2 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles (12,000 lb total)
  • 4 x 2,000 lb GBU-8 bombs (8,000 lb total)
  • 4 x 2,000 lb GBU-8 bombs + 2 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles (8,000 lb total)
  • 6 x AGM-65B missiles
  • 6 x AGM-65B missiles + 2 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles
  • 2 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles
  • 2 x 20 mm M61 cannons (1,200 rpg = 2,400 total)

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".

Pros:

  • Deadly GAU-8 cannon
  • High number and variety of suspended weapons
  • Access to 2 x AIM-9L all-aspect missiles
  • Extremely large amount of countermeasures
  • Decent manueverability for a heavy aircraft
  • The GAU-8 can be paired with 2 x M61 Vulcan cannons to essentially obliterate any aircraft or ground unit
  • Airframe can take a considerable amount of damage
  • Exceptional roll rate
  • Flaps can be deployed above 500 km/h

Cons:

  • Not very high top speed, making it an easy target both from the ground and in the sky
  • Poor climb rate, it is recommended to stay low
  • Can face aircraft that severely outclasses the A-10A at it's battle rating
  • SPAA's can easily take down the A-10A once spotted nearby

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
