Description

The T-72AV (TURMS-T) is a premium gift rank Soviet medium tank with a battle rating of (AB), (RB), and (SB). It was introduced in Update "New Power".

General info

Survivability and armour

The T-72AV is a modernized version of the Soviet-made main battle tank T-72A. The Kontakt-1 ERA on the front of the turret is no longer directly mounted on it and is instead mounted on structural steel supports that form a slight arrow shape, it is also fitted with the Turms-T fire control system.

Armour type:

  • Rolled homogeneous armour (Hull)
  • Cast homogeneous armour (Turret, Engine exhaust)

Usage in battles

The T-72AV (TURMS-T) is a Soviet MBT that is the mainstay in long-range engagements as the cannon is accurate at long distances. The recommended combat tactics is to acquire targets from afar with the thermal imager, use the laser rangefinder to achieve a successful hit and engage from the greatest possible distance. Avoid short-range combat at all costs.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Second generation thermal sights for both gunner and commander
  • Capable of firing every 7.1 seconds and because of autoloader mechanism even after losing a crew member or being on fire gun, the reload speed will not change
  • Low profile, easy to hide
  • Can use ESS and shoot through it with thermal sights
  • Extremely armoured turret can eat modern APFSDS even when uptiered
  • ERA offers excellent protection against ATGMS and powerful HEAT shells
  • Gun offers a lot of ammunition variants, including HEATFS used to hull break lighter vehicles and big HE round that when placed properly could destroy even Leopard 2A6 from the front, as well as access to 3BM42
  • Commander's thermals, a feature highly uncommon amongst Soviet/Russian vehicles
  • APFSDS shell has high muzzle velocity: long range targets are much easier to hit

Cons:

  • "CONTACT-1" explosive reactive armour, offers no protection against kinetic rounds
  • Explosive reactive armour can be rapidly shot off with 12.7 and 20 mm gunfire
  • Only 3 crew members that are compactly located inside the tank, resulting in a well-placed shot knocking out the entire tank
  • Very slow reverse speed
  • The mechanized ammo rack is located in the middle of the tank right underneath the commander and gunner, resulting in quick ammo detonation when shot from the sides
  • Sides offer low protection making the task to angle tank properly a lot harder
  • Turret has weak spots that can disable the gun and exposing the LFP is a one-shot death wish
  • Hull armour is the same as on the 9.3 T-72A: it can easily be penetrated by most of the guns you face
  • Not as mobile as the competition it faces
  • Slower reload compared to the opposition

History

Devblog

The T-72AV (TURMS-T) is a Soviet T-72AV tank modernized for the Syrian army. The TURMS fire control system, developed by the Italian company Officine Galileo, was previously used on C1 Ariete tanks. In the early 2000's, this fire control system was adopted for the T-72.

The system significantly improves the tank's vision capabilities, thanks to the commander's panoramic sight. It also features a high-quality thermal imaging gunner's sight, which allows the tank to effectively perform combat missions at night and in poor visibility conditions. By 2006, 122 TURMS kits were produced for the Syrian army.
