Description

Aigle was the lead ship of her class of contre-torpilleurs, commissioned in September 1932. During World War II, she performed mostly escort duties. With the start of hostilities against Italy, she participated in Operation Vado in June 1940, silencing the coastal defence battery at Cape Vado and engaging other coastal installations as well as Italian torpedo boats. After the signing of the Armistice at Compiègne and the surrender of France, she served in the Vichy Fleet, again primarily in escort duty. She did not see any combat until Case Anton, the German takeover of Vichy France. In defiance of the German breach of the armistice, French sailors burned Aigle, along with numerous other vessels, during the scuttling of the French fleet at Toulon.

The Aigle-class (C), Aigle, 1942 was introduced into the game with the start of closed beta testing of the French bluewater fleet in Update "Sky Guardians" as a premium vessel. She was removed from the game after War Thunder's 11th Anniversary sale. She returned to sale on the anniversary of her launch. Being in her 1942 refit, she features very good anti-air and anti-coastal armament, in particular a large amount of medium-range 37 mm guns, making her an excellent support for friendly vessels. Against larger threats, she boasts excellent primary armament and very good long-range torpedoes. Her biggest issue is the lack of survivability, even if she has the largest crew complement of her class. She also has the lowest speed in her class, but the difference is not significant enough to affect combat performance.

Talk about the vehicle's armour. Note the most well-defended and most vulnerable zones, e.g. the ammo magazine. Evaluate the composition of components and assemblies responsible for movement and manoeuvrability. Evaluate the survivability of the primary and secondary armaments separately. Don't forget to mention the size of the crew, which plays an important role in fleet mechanics. Save tips on preserving survivability for the "Usage in battles" section. If necessary, use a graphical template to show the most well-protected or most vulnerable points in the armour.

Armament

Primary armament

5 х Turret138.6 mm/40 model 1927 gun
Ammunition100 rounds
Vertical guidance-10° / 28°

Provide information about the characteristics of the primary armament. Evaluate their efficacy in battle based on their reload speed, ballistics and the capacity of their shells. Add a link to the main article about the weapon: {{main|Weapon name (calibre)}}. Broadly describe the ammunition available for the primary armament, and provide recommendations on how to use it and which ammunition to choose.

Some ships are fitted with weapons of various calibres. Secondary armaments are defined as weapons chosen with the control Select secondary weapon. Evaluate the secondary armaments and give advice on how to use them. Describe the ammunition available for the secondary armament. Provide recommendations on how to use them and which ammunition to choose. Remember that any anti-air armament, even heavy calibre weapons, belong in the next section. If there is no secondary armament, remove this section.

Anti-aircraft armament

2 х Turret2 x 13.2 mm model 1929 Hotchkiss machine gun
Ammunition3600 rounds
Belt capacity30 rounds
Fire rate476 shots/min

An important part of the ship's armament responsible for air defence. Anti-aircraft armament is defined by the weapon chosen with the control Select anti-aircraft weapons. Talk about the ship's anti-air cannons and machine guns, the number of guns and their positions, their effective range, and about their overall effectiveness – including against surface targets. If there are no anti-aircraft armaments, remove this section.

Additional armament

Setup 16 x 550 mm model 1923DT torpedo
Main article: Model 1923DT (550 mm)

The torpedoes of the Aigle are rather slow compared to the ones the German or American ships can carry. In trade for the slow speed, they have an above-average travel distance of 9km with a decent amount of explosive filler of 308g of TNT, for inflicting great damage to enemy ships. Further, the Aigle is rather limited by only having 6 of those torpedoes, disallowing unthought use of the 1923DT torpedoes.

The torpedo launchers of the Aigle are located at two positions, 3 in the centre and 3 in the back of the ship. This allows the ship to have good torpedo launch angles over the sides which allows the ship to launch torpedoes while retreating from a position or turning away from enemy fire.

Usage in battles

Describe the technique of using this ship, the characteristics of her use in a team and tips on strategy. Abstain from writing an entire guide – don't try to provide a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought. Talk about the most dangerous opponents for this vehicle and provide recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of playing with this vehicle in various modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Decent HE and SAPBC ammunition, great for fighting other destroyers and coastal fleet targets
  • Turrets have antifragmentation armour to offer, reducing the chance of the turret being knocked out
  • Ammunition is stored further down in the ship, making it harder to cause an explosion
  • Very fast ship, making it harder to hit and improving survivability
  • Torpedoes have a long travel distance

Cons:

  • Main guns lack solid AP for more armoured targets
  • Slow turret traverse of the main guns, making it harder to quickly react
  • Can only carry 6 torpedoes, requiring the player to carefully consider when to use them
  • Hull lacks any armour protection
  • Torpedoes are rather slow and hard to effectively use over long distances

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ship in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the ship and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Ship-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the ship's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).
