Effective damage
The Rb05A has more than enough explosive mass to take out most tanks and can overpressure most light tanks with ease with its proximity fuse.
Comparison with analogues
Give a comparative description of missiles that have firepower equal to this weapon.
Usage in battles
In air battles, the Rb05A can be a menace if used right. Especially when mounted on the SK60B. A good player can use the missile to knock out enemy bombers from 5 to 8 km away.If mastered, the missile can also be used to destroy enemy fighters on a head-on!
In ground battles, however, its performance heavily relies on the plane you mount it on.When its mounted on the SK60B, no SPAA will have enough range to counter it and it will lead to easy kills. But when mounted on other planes such as the AJ37, AJS37, JAS39A or JAS39C, the missile will be outranged by the enemy SPAA and also will be drastically worse than the RB75 missile that these planes carry.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- 76 kg TNTe warhead destroys almost everything
- Quite fast
- Has a proximity fuse
Cons:
- Must be manually guided, can be difficult to control
- Guidance time of only 24 seconds
History
The RB 05 was developed as a ground attack missile for the AJ37 "Viggen" fighter-bomber and SAAB-105 trainer aircraft in 1967. The missile was tracer-guided using radio controlled manual command to line of sight (MCLOS), which meant that aiming had to be done separate to piloting, either requiring a two-seat cockpit with a dedicated missile gunner, as per the Saab 105, or a central computer which could control the aircraft during guidance, as present on the Saab 37 Viggen.
During development, Saab used a variety of J35 "Draken" prototypes for testing. J35 prototypes with tandem trainer cockpits were used for many of the firing trials, as the guidance equipment could be easily retrofitted into the secondary cockpit to trial guidance with a dedicated missile gunner.
The Rb05 entered service in 1972 and was withdrawn from service in 2005.
