Description
The Spitfire Mk IXc is a rank IV Israeli fighter with a battle rating of 4.3 (AB/RB) and 4.7 (SB). It was introduced in Update "Winged Lions".
The Spitfire is an excelent dogfighter. It fits 2x 20mm Hispanos with 4x 7.7mm MGs that share similar muzzle velocity, making it easier to aim with tracer belts in the MGs and air or ground target belts in the Hispanos. This will help to save the small amount of shots of the cannons. Small bursts with the cannons are required in order to secure kills due to jamming and overheating without the upgrades installed
General info
Flight performance
Describe how the aircraft behaves in the air. Speed, manoeuvrability, acceleration and allowable loads - these are the most important characteristics of the vehicle.
The Spitfire Mk IXc has excelent handling in air combat compared enemys such as the P-51 and Bf-109. However it lacks speed and acceleration for its BR compared to his opponents

Survivability and armour
- 38 mm Bulletproof glass - Armoured windscreen in front of the Pilot
- 3 mm Steel - Steel plate on top of fuel tanks
- 4 mm Steel - Steel plate on pilot's seat. Behind pilot is another 6-7 mm steel plate
- 3 mm Steel - Steel plates around ammunition and guns
- 1 mm - Steel plate over central fuel tanks
*Note that one of the central fuel tanks (the one below the 1 mm steel plate) is not self sealing, and thus a hit on this tank may result in severe fuel leaks
Modifications and economy
Armaments
Offensive armament
The Spitfire Mk IXc (Israel) is armed with:
- 2 x 20 mm Hispano Mk.II cannons, wing-mounted (120 rpg = 240 total)
- 4 x 7.7 mm Browning machine guns, wing-mounted (350 rpg = 1,400 total)
Suspended armament
The Spitfire Mk IXc (Israel) can be outfitted with the following ordnance:
- Without load
- 2 x 250 lb AN-M57 bombs (500 lb total)
- 2 x 250 lb AN-M57 bombs + 16 x Flz.-Rakete Oerlikon rockets (500 lb total)
- 16 x Flz.-Rakete Oerlikon rockets
Usage in battles
Pilots most common and dangerous opponents will be the Bf-109s and P-51s at 4.0+ BR due to their supperior speed and acceleration specially at altitudes above 5KM when the Spitfire loses significant engine power. A better alternative is fighting at around 3-4KM, however, at this BR fighters like the Fw-190 and P-47s will outrun you but not out-turn the Spitfire. However, your good climb rate means that getting to 4KM is faster compared to other planes like the Fw-190 and P-47s, making it easier to start fights with better energy.
Pilots should use their supperior agility to lure boom and zoom fighters to lower altitudes (around 3-4KM) and force them into a turn-fight in wich, thanks to the Spitfire low turn time, pilots should be able to cut into their enemies turn soon or later. Note that to initiate a turn-fight pilots should be flying at 350-400KM/h, this is due to low energy retention, and thus prolonged fights with enemies should be avoided, specially if this enemies initiate the fight with higher speed than you. The only planes that will consistently out-turn you will be all models of the A6M "Zero" and the A7M "Reppu".
Head-ons should be avoided due to the guns being wing mounted and far from the center of the plane, and function better at close-mid range (up to 600M) with 300-400 of convergence. Hits at enemys flying straight are hard without good aming, thus the best way to deal with foes is at the moment of dogfight when the wing mounted guns become a bennefit
Engine is know for overheating and this should be controlled by manually changing the engine power. The spitfire requires knowledge and trigger discipline, but even with that, Hispanos have mediocre damage, and thus, going for bombers without good aiming should be avoided, however, when fighting this, atack from below to avoid the defensive turrets and go for the engines to set them on fire. Catching bombers would not be an issue with the excelent climb rate of the Spitfire
Ground RB should be avoided, Hispanos lack penetration to kill light tanks or SPAA and ground ordenance is lackluster, however good aiming with the rockets may result in a good amount of kills against light and medium targets. Pilots could also use the spitfire to clear the skies in moments when the enemy has complete air supremacy.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Good roll rate and maneuverability.
- Good low-altitude performance.
- Larger ammo supply of 120 RPG for the 20 mm cannons, compared to other Spitfire variants with 60 RPG.
- Machine gun ammo pool of 350 RPG, good for unexperienced pilots.
- Similar muzzle velocity between the MGs and the cannons making it easier to aim
- Amazing climb rate, superior to many boom and zoom fighters such as the Bf-109 when upgraded
Cons:
- Poor cannon overheating when stock (lack of accuracy and jamming)
- Poor damage output of the MGs
- Poor high altitude performance (above 5,000 m).
- Poor acceleration.
- Roll rate compression ~400KM/h
- Prone to fires and not all tanks are self sealling
History
The Supermarine Spitfire was a british, single engine, full metal monoplane fighter used mainly during World War II, however it was used by Israel during the Arab-Israel cconflict of 1948. The plane itself had many variant however it performed very well against Luftwaffe aircraft during World War II such as the Bf-109 and the Fw-190 or the mix of planes from the Arab forces like the Macchi M.C 205, Fiat G.55 and Hawker Hurricanes.
The Mk.IX variant had a total of 5665 planes produced and is known as the most produced variant of the Spitfire, but at the moment it was a stop-gap solution before more capable variants could be produced. It was used mainly as a fighter, interceptor, fighter-bomber and as a reconnaissance aircraft. It would be modified and upgraded trough it's entire career with the introduction of a bubble canopy, gyroscopic sights, modified intercoolers and the introduction of Rolls Royce Griffon Engines
