Description

The IS-2 mod. 1944 was created after to the initial failure of the previous IS-2 modell (IS-2 1943) against even the weak 75mm guns of the german StuGs and Panzer IVs, due to the nearly flat frontal armor. The soviet highcommand then decided to produce another version of the IS-2 with an heavily sloped armorplate, generally known as the IS-2 mod. 1944. It was used successfully on the eastern front, till the end of the war and is remembered as one of the mightiest tanks of ww2. In the game, the IS-2 mod. 1944 sits at a BR of 6.3, wich is 0.6 higher, than the first IS-2. It now features a mighty frontal plate, sloped at 61° backwards and also a 12.7mm DShK machinegun on top for AA-defence. It has the same gun as its predecessor, but even at BR 6.3, it is one of the most destructable guns in the game, with high pen and devastating postpen damage.

General info

Survivability and armour

The armor, while having a nigh impenetrable frontplate and decent a turret, has many weakspots. First there is the right part of the turret, because while on the left side, the gunmantlet is connecting with the turretarmor, there is no mantlet on the righthandside, so it has just half the thickness of the left side. Next we have the lowerglacis, wich is a very prominent target, without pretty much any armor for its BR (~130mm effective thickness). Shots of a german 88mm or an american 90mm will wreak your IS-2 1944. Last but not least, we have the drivers hatch. While being not as prominent as the first two mentioned, many experienced players will go for a shot right here, when you are hulldown. With arround 120mm effective thickness, it is really easy to penetrate even with small guns, like the american 76mm and has devastating effect on your tank.

If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.

Mobility

Write about the mobility of the ground vehicle. Estimate the specific power and maneuverability as well as the maximum speed forward and backward.

Armaments

Main armament

Give the reader information about the characteristics of the main gun. Assess its effectiveness in a battle based on the reloading speed, ballistics and the power of shells. Do not forget about the flexibilty of the fire, that is how quickly the cannon can be aimed at the target, open fire on it and aim at another enemy. Add a link to the main article on the gun: {{main|Name of the weapon}}. Describe in general terms the ammunition available for the main gun. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage.

Additional armament

Some tanks are armed with several guns in one or more turrets. Evaluate the additional weaponry and give advice on its use. Describe the ammunition available for additional weaponry. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage. If there is no additional weaponry remove this subsection.

Machine guns

Offensive and anti-aircraft machine guns not only allow you to fight some aircraft, but also are effective against lightly armoured vehicles. Evaluate machine guns and give recommendations on its use.

Usage in the battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Summarize and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list. Do not use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - they have a substitution in the form of softer "inadequate", "effective".

Pros:

  • Great 122mm D-25T gun, featuring good penetration and devastating postpen damage.
  • Extremly strong upper glacis, with about 230mm effective thickness, sloped at 61°
  • Superb reverse speed (18 kph)
  • Decently mobile, for a tank of its seize
  • 12.7mm machinegun on top against planes
  • Decent turretarmor on the left side
  • Trolish armor, can bounce some unexpected shells
  • AAA safe from pretty much everywhere
  • Convenient stock grind

Cons:

  • Long reload for its maingun (27 seconds without crew)
  • Many weakspots (Drivershatch, lowerglacis, right side of the turret
  • Only 4 crewmembers
  • Worse optics than its predecessor
  • Can't sidescrape, due to its cheeks
  • Ammocapacity for the MG on top is low, only 250 rounds

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ground vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/historical reference" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/Name-vehicles/historical reference) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to include links to sources at the end of the article.

Media

An excellent addition to the article will be video guides, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
