History
The Akan m/41A is a Swedish licensed version of the French Hispano 404 20 mm autocannon. The 404 came into existence when Hispano-Suiza was assigned to develop a 20 mm cannon that could fit through the propeller shaft of an inline aircraft engine. To accomplish this task, Hispano-Suiza used a modified version of the Oerlikon FF that was being produced under license that became the Hispano HS.9. However, Oerlikon entered a patent dispute with Hispano-Suiza and lost their license forcing the later company to restart development of the "moteur-canon" for the French. Marc Brikigt, Hispano's chief engineer, used a new gas-operation locking bolt action for the cannon based on a 1919 patent from an American machine gun designer for the 404 instead of the Oerlikon advanced primer ignition blowback action. The new cannon had a lighter bolt and was lighter in weight overall which made it ideal for mounting on ground vehicles as an anti-aircraft cannon. It was in this role that the HS.404 got the attention of Sweden who received a license to make the cannon as the Lvakan m/41. An aircraft mounted variant the m/41A would followed and was used on the T18B torpedo bomber and the J21A-1 fighter plane.
