The Su-39 can take hits from missiles with smaller warheads such as the FIM-92K Stinger.

The Su-39 has IRCM located on the rear tail. IRCM provides protection to the aircraft defending it from IR missiles from behind, but be aware that aircraft close enough or IR missiles that have ECCM can still strike you from behind.

Usage in battles

The Su-39 is a Close Air Support plane which performs best in Ground RB where it can provide support to tanks below. However, it is slower than most fighter jets that can be met at the BR, making it particularly vulnerable to both air and ground threats. The Su-39's defence against aircraft are 2 x R-60Ms and a GSh-30-2 cannon, while its IRCM and large quantity of countermeasures can help mitigate the threat of IR-guided missiles.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Has IRCM on rear of the plane
  • Wide variety of air-to-ground munition
  • Decent acceleration
  • Durable airframe

Cons:

  • Poor manoeuvrability at low speeds
  • Having the radar pod/mercury targeting pod affects manoeuvrability a lot

History

The Su-25TM (designated Su-39 for export purposes) was an anti-tank focused upgrade of the Su-25. It differs externally by having a hump behind the cockpit to fit more electronics and a TV mounted in the nose.
