Usage in battles

Low BR (of 5.7 - 6.7)

Can penetrate every enemy tank almost everywhere (exceptions: Tiger I vision port, Tiger II hull (unless angled downwards), Maus, and E100, as well as american heavy tanks turrets frontally), and reliably oneshoots the crew becouse of high amount of explosives inside of shells. Long reload is still worth it, and most likely it pays off.

High BR (of 7.0 - 7.7)

Tanks are going to get tougher as their guns are improved, and chemical energy shells are more and more common, which means that getting rid of enemies quick is really important. Enemies which are well armored are going to withstand your shells easily, so heavy tanks won't be fun to deal with. MBT's on the other hand will most likely penetrate you easily, but thats double edged sword. They can penetrate you, you can penetrate them. And they may have mobility advantage, but in terms of post-pen you are definitely a leader here.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• Amazing penetration (at lower BR's) and post-penetration effects often leads to oneshooting enemy
• The later APHE shell (BR-471D) has slightly better penetration, while still retaining its wonderful post-penetration effect
• Stock shell (BR-471) has similar performance to the later BR-471B on the IS-2s
• Shell velocity is far better than other lower-rank 122 mm cannons found on the SU-122

Cons:

• Rather slow reload of around 20 seconds, mid-range sniping or providing heavy fire for your team is advised
• Has poor elevation angles on all models equipped with it.
• When attacking different targets, switching ammo types will take time
• At higher BR's it can't penetrate tanks front reliably
