Description

The AMX-32 P1 is the first prototype subvariant of the AMX-32, which is the third variant of the AMX-30 main battle tank family. Ateliers de Construction d'Issy-les-Moulineaux and Atelier de Construction de Puteaux co-developed an export tank in the late 1970s during the Cold War to meet a specific market niche of nations with low defence budgets. Despite the development of six prototypes, there was no interest in foreign sales. In June 1979, the AMX-32 P1, the first prototype of an improved and modified AMX-30 for the export market, was presented. The AMX-32 P1 deliberately duplicated the spaced armour system on the German Leopard 1A3 and Leopard 1A4, resulting in better armour protection and enhanced survivability against anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). However, no orders were ever placed.

Introduced in Update "Apex Predators", the AMX-32 P1 is designed to be a low-cost alternative main battle tank for countries with limited defence budgets. The AMX-32 P1 has less mobility than the AMX-30 Super while sharing several features in common, such as a two-plane fully automatic stabilization system and thermal imaging equipment for the gunner. This is mostly owing to the weak engine and overall heavy structure. Nonetheless, it might be employed in battle as an alternative to the AMX-30 Super. Due to its low mobility, its play style may be more constrained, which does not aid its ranks since its armour is too thin to withstand any opponent's fire.

Describe armour protection. Note the most well protected and key weak areas. Appreciate the layout of modules as well as the number and location of crew members. Is the level of armour protection sufficient, is the placement of modules helpful for survival in combat? If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.

Armour type:

  • Rolled homogeneous armour

RB and SB700 hp
Power-to-weight ratio
AB35.2 hp/t
RB and SB18.4 hp/t

The AMX-32 (105) is somewhat of a letdown when it comes to the mobility. This is due to the fact that the engine only outputs 680 hp when spaded, which isn't really enough at its BR. This is the same engine power as the AMX-30B2 at a lower BR and in general you can see the AMX-32 (105) as a stabilized AMX-30B2 at a higher BR. The tank can neutral steer and reverse at the same speed that it can go forward, so use this when engaging targets, but be careful when peaking targets since you often need more time to get into position than you expect.

The stock experience is really painful with the tank sometimes struggling to reach 30 km/h on flat terrain, this doesn't mean that you can't reach higher speeds. On paved roads and other hard surfaces, you will be able to get your speed but only as long as you don't turn, turning is something that can easily make you lose 10 km/h or more. Don't expect to be the first one to reach the best locations, you might not even reach the capture point in time before your teammates capped it. When spaded, you will be a bit faster but not really fast for the BR but you will be able to reach speeds over 30 km/h more reliably.

For those who are used to the AMX-30 Super, this tank will be a major oddity due to the lack of power, but this shouldn't discourage you from playing the AMX-32 (105). While the AMX-32 (105) leaves somethings to be desired when it comes to mobility, other things make up for it and the whole package is rather good.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Coaxial 20 mm autocannon with its own independent elevation
  • One of the few French tanks with a stabilizer
  • Access to a laser rangefinder for accurate long-range fighting
  • Relatively good mobility (especially in reverse)

Cons:

  • Paper-thin turret and hull armour is unlikely to stop any tank shells

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).
