Description

The Meteor NF.13 reached Israel when Britain offered the sale of Gloster Meteors to all nations in the Middle East with the intentions of gaining sales while remaining neutral. The IAF, needing to improve their night-fighting capabilities, applied for an offer of Meteor NF.13s made by Britain to Syria and Egypt. As such, 6 aircraft were ordered in 1956. The 119th squadron would be formed with the intentions of using these new Meteors. Three would be delivered in the same year, however the other 3 aircraft would only be delivered in 1958.

The Meteor NF.13 was introduced in Update "Winged Lions". It features a powerful night-fighting radar capable of detecting aircraft at high and medium altitudes, something that may be very useful when fighting undetected bombers. It also has very good engines, being one of the fastest to accelerate and takeoff at its battle rating, which also comes with good energy retention and overall very good cruising speed. However it lacks roll rate and the wing mounted guns can be tricky to aim at short ranges. The plane also lacks any kind of ground ordnance, and thus, is limited to only air-to-air combat since Hispanos can only penetrate the most lightly armoured of ground targets at its BR.

The Meteor NF.13 has very powerful engines, the best from the Meteor family. These engines offer great overall acceleration but especially at low speeds, a very good cruise speed at around 930 km/h and good energy retention in turn fights. However the roll rate is very bad, this can make aiming very hard especially at high speed when the aircraft compresses.

The engines of the Meteor NF.13 are prone to catch fire, since they are mounted in the wings and the aircraft is a very large target that becomes very sluggish at low speeds. However its two fuel tanks are self-sealing and feature FPE if one of the engines catches fire. Even with only one engine the Meteor has enough power to return back to base with careful manoeuvres.

Armaments

Offensive armament

Ammunition780 rounds
Fire rate750 shots/min
Main article: Hispano Mk.V (20 mm)

The Meteor NF.13 (Israel) is armed with:

  • 4 x 20 mm Hispano Mk.V cannons, wing-mounted (195 rpg = 780 total)

Hispanos are known for their lack of damage, they are however quite fast, having good muzzle velocity and fast firing rate, that alongside their good ammo pool makes them very easy to aim and use by beginners.

Usage in battles

As a very fast aircraft, the Meteor NF.13 can be used in two very different playstyles in all gamemodes with little differences:

Interceptor/Boom & Zoom

The Meteor NF.13 has enough engine power to climb early to very high altitudes (~6,000 m). While engine performance is lacking at this altitudes, most bombers become easy targets, however these attacks require good aiming since the Hispanos lack damage against targets like strategic bombers common at the BR. If not used against bombers, climbing to similar altitudes and picking enemies apart with boom and zoom tactics is also good idea. Many fighters at its BR like the Me 262s, the M.D 450B Ouragan, and the F-80 become very slow during turn-fights, offering great opportunity targets for aware pilots.

Frontline Fighter

The Meteor NF.13 also has a place as a frontline fighter, rushing straight into action. In this case, the Meteor will be able to out-run, out-accelerate and out-turn most fighters or attack aircraft. The most common threats are the F-80, F9F, and early F-86 Sabres. When used in this role, the poor roll rate would be a big issue, and thus good aiming is required to eliminate distracted pilots focused on teammates.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Spread of wing-mounted cannons can make it easier to connect hits
  • Good ammo pool and fire rate for the cannons
  • Very good turn rate and energy retention
  • High thrust-to-weight ratio allows for very good climb rate, acceleration and top speed
  • Powerful night-fighting radar for detection of bombers and enemies trough clouds and smoke

Cons:

  • Bad flight and engine performance at high altitudes
  • Wing-mounted guns are hard to aim against enemies directly in front of the plane
  • Cannons can jam quickly if used without care
  • Very big target, easier to shot down compared to similar BR planes
  • Lack of ground ordnance for use in ground battles

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).
