The Volna-M (Волна-M; Wave-M), known as SA-N-1B in NATO codename was the navalized version of the land-based S-125 Neva/Pechora (Нева/Печора; NATO codename SA-3 Goa) SAM in Soviet Navy service. It is the second shipborne SAM introduced in game alongside with the Soviet destroyer [[Bravy]] as its anti-aircraft systems.

Due to current battle ratings, Bravy the only ship that carries Volna-M system has perhaps the most fearsome anti-aircraft capabilities at its tier (with the only other ship with SAM, [[USS Douglas]], at 4.0). The V-600P SAM has the range any traditional AA guns could never travel at up to 16 km, although it might not sound much in Cold War, but it is extremely lethal for propeller aircrafts at its tier with either "visual" guidance via radio command or radar guidance. In most cases, if any aircrafts triggered its radio fuse within its 40 m radius, they are very likely to receive lethal damages from the shrapnel and makes the aircraft unable to continue its designated missions if not shatter them right away; depending on the guidance method of leading/direct-hit/automatic (default as Alt+L), do make sure to keep the target on the crosshair accordingly. Do remember that due to the early design of the reload system, it takes around a minute to reload both railings, which would give experienced and daring player to deliver fatal blow to the system's carrier ship.

The V-600P SAM possesses an exceptional range of up to 16 km, surpassing the capabilities of conventional anti-aircraft guns. While this range may not seem significant in the Cold War era, it poses a grave threat to propeller aircraft at its battle rating. In most scenarios, if an aircraft enters the 40 m radius of the missile and triggers its radio fuse, it is highly likely to sustain lethal damage from the resulting shrapnel, rendering it incapable of completing its mission or even destroying it outright. It should be noted that due to the early design of the reloading system, it takes approximately one minute to reload both rails. This presents an opportunity for skilled and daring players to deliver a fatal blow to the system's carrier ship.

While it is still named as a SAM systems, some players will see the 42 kg TNT equivalent of explosive a good way to take out smaller vessels; the systems can be fired horizontally unlike its (earlier) US counterpart, although the 130 mm SM-2-1 turret or the 45 mm quad-mount turrets are devastating enough, but manual-controlled V-600P can be more dangerous to such vessels.

Description

The Volna-M (Волна-M; Wave-M), NATO codename: SA-N-1B, was the navalized version of the land-based S-125 Neva/Pechora (Нева/Печора; NATO codename: SA-3 Goa) SAM in Soviet Navy service.

General info

Missile characteristics
Mass 912 kg
Guidance Semi-automatic (SACLOS)
Launch range 16 km
Missile guidance time 26 secs
Explosive mass 42.24 kg TNTeq
Arming distance 300 m
Trigger radius 40 m
Armour penetration 70 mm

Effective damage

The V-600P for Volna-M system has 42.42 kg TNT equivalent of explosives that can cause significant shrapnel and explosive damage to its designated target: aircraft. The explosive content itself can also trigger overpressure damage to smaller vessels, especially patrol boats.

Comparison with analogues

  • RIM-24A - Greater explosive filler, but with lesser range.

Usage in battles

Although classified as a SAM system, some players may find the V-600P's 42 kg TNT equivalent explosive payload effective against smaller vessels. Unlike its US counterpart, the V-600P can be fired horizontally. While the devastating 130 mm SM-2-1 turret or the 45 mm quad-mount turrets are already formidable, the manually controlled V-600P can pose an even greater danger to such vessels.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Extremely long firing range at 16 km
  • Rather high explosive content which can sometimes destroy smaller vessels in a single hit
  • 16 spare missiles

Cons:

  • Large fuse radius, can be a problem when hitting fast-moving aircraft
  • Extremely long reload time for the missile system
