Keep in mind that this plane is more sluggish than the premium brother, it has 100km less top speed than the premium (Su-11). In air battles always use HE belt or air targets belt as it will sherd enemy aircraft in pieces with just a few well aimed shots.

Description

The Su-9 is a Soviet rank V jet fighter, sitting at the battle rating of 7.3 (AB) and 7.0 (RB, SB). It was implemented in the Update "Ixwa Strike". There is also a premium version of this plane sitting at the same battle rating. The difference between the two is in the enigine preformance and placement. The 9 version has the engines placed more like a Me-262, the premium version has them more like a Meteor.

Modifications and economy

Armaments

Offensive armament

Main articles: N-37 (37 mm), NS-23 (23 mm)

The Su-9 is armed with:

  • 1 x 37 mm N-37 cannon, nose-mounted (40 rpg)
  • 2 x 23 mm NS-23 cannons, nose-mounted (100 rpg = 200 total)

Suspended armament

The Su-9 can be outfitted with the following ordnance:

  • Without load
  • 1 x 250 kg FAB-250M-46 bomb (250 kg total)
  • 2 x 250 kg FAB-250M-46 bombs (500 kg total)
  • 1 x 500 kg FAB-500M-46 bomb (500 kg total)

Usage in battles

Ground RB

Su-9 is capable of destroying ground tragets with usage of it’s 500kg bomb. Dive bombing can be a good tactic but dont pull of to late as the engines aren’t that powerful as its premium brother, the Su-11. Its possible to destroy some light and medium or even heavy tanks with usage of the right ammunition belt. Talking about destroying heavy tanks, top-down approaches heavily reccomended.

Air RB

This plane has great firepower but always watch the ammo count so you wont run out of bullets is the worst setuation possible. For example: if you have very low ammo AVOID head on approaches, as you might run out before the enemy which could lead to heavy damage to your aircraft (if the enemy of course hits you and you dont pull of in the right time). The plane has 90mm of bulletproof glass in front of the pilot, so your pilot has a high chance of survival in head on-s. Once the plane gets up to speed it becomes a great bomber hunter. Keep in mind that this plane is more sluggish than the premium brother, it has 100km less top speed than the premium (Su-11). In air battles always use HE belt or air targets belt as it will sherd enemy aircraft in pieces with just a few well aimed shots.

Pros and cons

Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".

Pros:

  • Powerful offensive armament (23 mm and 37 mm cannons)
  • Airbrakes
  • Secondary armament (1x 500kg bomb, 2x 250kg bomb, 1x 250kg bomb)
  • Thick bulletproof glass in front of pilot
  • Clever placement of fuel tanks + self sealing!

Cons:

  • Bad acceleration and bad climb rate
  • Low ammunition count
  • More sluggish than premium version
  • Very sluggish with secondary weapons (not so bad with only one 250kg)

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).
