The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a rank {{Specs|rank}} Italian fighter {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.85 "Supersonic"]]. The Re. 2001 serie 1 is a lot like the [[C.202]], other than having different, slower-to-lower/retract landing gear, a different engine that overheats a bit more quickly, and crappier armor. The Re. 2001 is also a tad more maneuverable, with a turn rate (upgraded) of 18 seconds, versus the C.202's upgraded turn time of 21.4 seconds. Additionally, the Re. 2001 has a worse climb rate and is slower. Thanks to all of this, the Re. 2001 should be played similarily to the C. 202. Just be careful, as you have worse armor.

The Re. 2001 should be played as a Boom & Zoom fighter, as your armament is a bit lacking against armored planes, but when incendiary rounds rounds are loaded, this plane can be very effective against unarmored planes. Avoid head-ons, as you lack any armor in the front whatsoever, leaving your pilot, engine and other stuff vulnerable.

The successor to the Re. 2000 was the Re. 2001, which was in a class with the excellent Macchi M.C. 202, but its operational career was limited, with priority on the scarce DB 601 aircraft engines going to the other fighter. A total of 237 were built, including the original interceptor, and fighter-bomber (CB) and night fighter (CN) variants. First flight was July, 1940. It had the same wing as the Re. 2000, but a new inline engine. This again led to objections by the Italian government about the wing fuel tanks. Redesign meant the first planes weren't delivered until June, 1941. It served in operational squadrons from December, 1941 until the Italian surrender.

Entering the Italian Royal Air Force contest to design a new fighter with a radial engine and large-calibre armament was a new experience for Reggiane. This Italian engineering company had previously only worked on large bombers. However, engineers Roberto Longhi and Antonio Alessio were confident that they could bring something new to the table. The construction of the monoplane fighter they designed for the contest was made from aluminium alloy and inspired by the American Seversky P-35 project. The Re.2000, as its creators called it, underwent extensive testing at the end of the summer in 1939. The fighter demonstrated superb flight and speed qualities compared to the other contest entries. When pitted against the Bf 109 E, the landmark German fighter of its time, the Re.2000 proved more manoeuvrable. Surprisingly, the metal monoplane even outflew the agile Fiat CR.42 biplane in testing! However, the Re.2000 ultimately lost the contest for serial production for the Italian air force – testing revealed leakage problems in the fuel tanks. Foreign customers expressed keen interest in the aircraft – the British ordered 300 units for the RAF (of course, the order was cancelled when Italy joined the war), and Finland, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, and Portugal were also interested. Sweden purchased 60 units of the model and Hungary purchased 70 units and a production license (the Hungarian versions were given the designation “Héja”). The design of the first Re.2000 fighter series was the basis for future developments at Reggiane, being more successful than its ill-fated predecessor.

Description

GarageImage Re.2001 serie 1.jpg

The Re.2001 serie 1 is a rank II Italian fighter with a battle rating of 3.0 (AB/RB) and 2.3 (SB). It was introduced in Update 1.85 "Supersonic". The Re.2001 serie 1 is a lot like the C.202, other than having different, slower-to-lower/retract landing gear, a different engine that overheats a bit more quickly, and worse armour. The Re.2001 is also a tad more manoeuvrable, with a turn time (upgraded) of 18 seconds, versus the C.202's upgraded turn time of 21.4 seconds. Additionally, the Re.2001 has a worse climb rate and is slower. Thanks to all of this, the Re.2001 should be played similarly to the C.202. Just be careful, as you have worse armour.

Armaments

Offensive armament

The Re.2001 serie 1 is armed with:

  • 2 x 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns, nose-mounted (350 rpg = 700 total)
  • 2 x 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns, wing-mounted (600 rpg = 1,200 total)

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Adept turning ability - capable of competing with Spitfires
  • Cockpit views are exceptional and has a rear-view mirror
  • Decent rate of climb

Cons:

  • Engine overheats rather quickly
  • Low firepower compared to its peers
  • Lacks an armoured windscreen so pilot is more vulnerable to being knocked out
