Although not integrated as a powerpack, the 8V150 diesel engine at 800 hp and its CH500 transmission can ensure sufficient speeds at different gears up to 60 km/h while having the required reverse speed to retreat to covers; while the power-weight ratio might not be the best among its competitors, it is more than enough to shine over earlier designs such as [[M109 (Family)|M109]] and [[2S3M]].

''Give the reader information about the characteristics of the main gun. Assess its effectiveness in a battle based on the reloading speed, ballistics and the power of shells. Do not forget about the flexibility of the fire, that is how quickly the cannon can be aimed at the target, open fire on it and aim at another enemy. Add a link to the main article on the gun: <code><nowiki>{{main|Name of the weapon}}</nowiki></code>. Describe in general terms the ammunition available for the main gun. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage.''

By late 1980s, NORINCO has successfully developed a 155 mm GC-45 based howitzer based on the Austrian design by Gerald Bull; to further fit the requirements of PLAGF for extended range, engineers built a XP52-155 howitzer and eventually been selected as the main armament of PLZ05 by its introduction. To also ensure the rate of fire, engineers also reverse-engineered the autoloader on 2S19 Msta-S with revisions for reliability and dimensions. The 30 round carousel can ensure continuous rate of fire at every 7.5 second per shot; with the varieties of shells onboard and rather high velocity, referring the PL05-155 as a "railway cannon" is applicable, do remember to hide the carousel from direct fire as the unit is connected directly to the combat compartment, any critical hit on the unit can  either disable the unit or detonate the turret to sky-high altitude.

{{:PL05 (155 mm)/Ammunition|Type 05 HE, Type 05 HE(VT), BEA1-155}}'''DBB03-155,''' '''HE , Stock -''' Referred as the Type 05 HE in Chinese client and being baseline HE shell in PLAGF service and the stock ammunition for PLZ05; while the explosive equivalent is nowhere close to NATO equivalents with at least a kilogram of explosives more, a direct hit on enemy's top plates or surfaces with predrilled holes for any purpose will certainly face the most miserable end possible if not eliminating them immediately.

'''BEA1-155,''' '''SAPCBC , Tier II -''' Likely for the demand to demolish enemy's fortifications, NORINCO introduced the BEA1-155 as an "APHE" (sic.) for 155 mm artillery systems, this will be currently the only SAPCBC for its caliber. Quoting from a CCTV-7 video, "The enemy in the bunker wouldn't feel any pain." What makes BEA1-155 different from BTM1-105 used by PLAGF tanks is the impressive explosive content of the shell, even if the enemy vehicle is not penetrated directly, the explosive content is sometimes enough to simply knock them out right away.

'''BES7-155 (VT),''' '''HE-VT , Tier III -''' Like PLZ83 and the 130 mm variant, the only difference to conventional HE is the MD81 proximity fuze; thanks to the introduction of fuze activation selections introduced in the update, this shell can used as the main HE shell once being researched. Be sure to set hotkey to change the fuze type before firing it - while it can certain blast light vehicles to their kingdom come, proximity fuze won't do much harm on armored targets.

PLAGF introduced the autoloader from 2S19 from Project 934 (to import Russian armaments after the fall of Red Giant) and revised the design for better ergonomics; while the ammo count is only at 30 shells at the rear of turret, as long as players can keep the autoloader away from any direct hit with the help of anti-spalling lining, the worst possible outcome would only be the disablment of the unit itself, instead of turning into a Shenzhou rocket for the crews.

Like most AFVs in modern time PLAGF, PLZ05 is equipped with a QJC88A controlled by the gunner; in case players see helicopters or light IFVs with very little protection, it can cause major troubles to such targets.

Describe armour protection. Note the most well protected and key weak areas. Appreciate the layout of modules as well as the number and location of crew members. Is the level of armour protection sufficient, is the placement of modules helpful for survival in combat? If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Excellent firepower
    • Long barrel 155 mm gun with high velocity for any shells
    • Devastating BEA1-155 SAPCBC which is both deadly from impact or explosion
    • Sufficient explosive filler for taking out even the heaviest targets
  • Great ergonomics
    • Autoloader with fixed 7.5 second reload
    • The fastest turret traverse speed among similar howitzer at 10°/s
    • Sufficient mobility to enable flanking operations or retreat to safety
    • Hydropneumatic suspension for extra depression, possibly the highest overall among howitzers
  • The very first Chinese vehicle to introduce anti-spalling liner
  • Sufficient frontal protection to stop .50 caliber up front
  • Versatile sight magnification for different engagement ranges
  • Equips with LRF for long-range engagement

Cons:

  • Huge profile which can be easily be spotted
  • Large turret carousel autoloader with high chance of detonation if been directly hit
  • Rather huge gun system which is prone to damages from direct hits
  • Default gun depression is not sufficient for complicated terrains

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
