Description

The M40A1 was an American recoilless rifle. While the actual caliber is 105 mm, it was designated as 106 mm for logistical purposes, so that incompatible ammunition from the preceding 105 mm M27 recoilless rifle would not be mistakenly delivered to units equipped with the M40.

Cannons equipped on a special mount carrying six cannons at once were designated the M40A1C. The gun was also designated the Type 60 in Japanese service, and the Cannone da 106 s.r.M40A1 in Italian service.

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.
