She spent the majority of her pre-war career across the Atlantic and Pacific. On a humanitarian trip to Latin America in 1934, the USS Trenton joined the Special Service Squadron. She joined Squadron 40-T in May 1939 to protect American interests during the Spanish Civil War, and she would not return to the U.S. until July 1940, when she escorted the Luxembourg royal family away from the German conquest of their country. The USS Trenton was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one battle star for her service during World War II. She transited the canal on November 18, arrived in Philadelphia a week later, and was decommissioned on December 20. Her name was removed from the Naval Vessel Register on January 21, 1946. On December 29, she was given to her buyer, the Patapsco Scrap Co. of Bethlehem, Pa., for scrapping.
