The name is a rank rank American fighter Battle-rating. It has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27, starting out as the F6F-3 Hellcat and was remodeled and updated to the F6F-5 Hellcat in Update 1.65 "Way of the Samurai".

The Grumman F6F Hellcat was used extensively in the Pacific Theater of WWII. The Hellcat was the ultimate answer against extremely manoeuvrable Japanese Zeroes. This plane greatly outperformed the Zero when taking advantage of high speeds and altitudes. The Hellcat can carry versatile payloads which will allow it to be utilized in various operations to include ground attack.
Flight performance
Specs-Avia-Flight
<!-- Describe how the aircraft behaves in the air. Speed, manoeuvrability, acceleration and allowable loads - these are the most important characteristics of the vehicle. -->
Due to its role as a naval fighter, the F6F-5's take-off distance is small enough to take flight from the carrier decks seen in the game.

Powered by a high-output Pratt & Whitney engine, the F6F-5's flight performance centres around this powerful engine combined with a sturdy fuselage. While the bulk makes the plane quite sluggish compared to some of its contemporaries, the characteristics are still favourable for energy retention. This makes the plane very favourable for Boom-n-Zoom tactics against enemies.
The key to both surviving and owning in the F6F is to keep your speed up and try to be even marginally higher than your opponents. Below 300 km/h (186 mph) it is very sluggish. As with most American fighters, Boom & Zoom is the preferred combat mode for the Hellcat, while its moderate high-speed manoeuvrability can be used to add in a high yo-yo. It has a lot of ammo, but a good aim is still important since boom-n-zoom only allows you a small window of opportunity to hit your target before you have to climb back to altitude. Still, this is an excellent aircraft to practice your aim and tactics with because it's more forgiving than most boom-n-zoom fighters. If you don't have a particularly good aim, a good tactic is to open up at 500 m (0.31 mi), starting with your aim on the aircraft, and then slowly move your aim in front of the target. You won't require as much lead when diving on your target at 600+ km/h (373+ mph).

With dual 1,000 lb bombs and six HVAR rockets armed, the Hellcat is actually a stable game-ending platform in a pinch when the rest of your team is not ground-attacking. With the two 1,000 pounds of bombs and six HVAR or two Tiny Tim rockets, the F6F-5 Hellcat makes a great strike fighter. The two Tiny Tim Anti-tank rockets can also be good for taking out heavier targets. Sometimes, it is useful to save the Cat as your last plane just for that. You can always jettison the rockets and bombs if you're suddenly forced to dogfight, jettisoning the ordnance increases speed as well as climb rate, while also decreasing turn time.

It is incredibly important to use Manual Engine Controls whilst piloting the Hellcat in Realistic or Simulator Battles. The Hellcat has access to three Supercharger gears, each tailored for a different altitude, and each will greatly improve your performance at their appropriate altitudes.

You must climb as high as you can - altitude is life, and once you dive, you can't get it back. Once you're on the deck, you're toast.

Keep in mind:

* It has a lot of engine power, but at anywhere between 5.7 and 7 tonnes, getting up to altitude isn't very easy.
* Resist the temptation to get into low-altitude turning fights. This is a heavy aircraft and it will lose a massive amount of speed in turns.
* While it has plenty of explosive armament options, in Realistic and Simulator battles the added weight and drag will usually make you an easy target for other fighters. Since most air battles are basically dogfights, you're often better off without the extra weight.
* This thing will perform reasonably well at low altitudes, but it's still recommended to stay at an altitude of 3 km or higher.

Pros:

* One of the few fighters that can carry a torpedo
* Versatile; very effective in either air-to-air or air-to-ground
* Bombs are mounted directly under the fuselage, allowing for accurate dive bombing
* Very good dive rate
* Good cockpit visibility
* Extremely efficient cooling systems
* Lots of ammo
* Can take some hits
* Decent at energy fighting, although not as good as the Bf 109 F-4

Cons:

* Torpedo must be dropped at a very low altitude and speed, making the plane vulnerable during attack runs
* Can carry only 3 salvos of HVAR rockets
* Carrying the two 1,000 lb bombs and the 6 HVAR rockets leads to a worse climb rate
* Slower top speed compared to other contemporary US fighters
* Higher stall speed than its Japanese counterparts
* Poor climb rate
* Control stiffening above moderate speeds
* Poor roll rate
* Large fuselage cross-section makes it a large target
* Wing-mounted guns may cause convergence issues
* Slow acceleration
The F6F Hellcat was Grumman's next fighter after the successful Wildcat. The F6F was designed from the start to be the ultimate answer against the Japanese Zero. The Hellcat was the planned replacement to the Wildcat since Pearl Harbor. The aircraft was designed from the start to be a much bigger airframe. The plan was to create a carrier-based fighter with more ammo, fuel, and larger wings. The XF6F-1 Prototype was already in the works when the U.S. officially entered World War II. Grumman engineers knew they would have to create an aircraft that was faster and climbed better based on combat experience and data collected from the A6M captured in the Aleutians. The prototype flew in June of 1942 and was powered by a Wright Cyclone R-2600. The aircraft's performance was not satisfactory. The decision was made to replace the powerplant with the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp.

The U.S. Navy needed a new carrier-based fighter. The Corsair and the Hellcat were both competing to fill that role. With delays in the F4U Corsair project, the Hellcat took the role as the primary fighter and never looked back. The new Hellcat excelled in nearly every way over the A6M Zeroes it faced. The Hellcat, unlike its opponents, featured self-sealing fuel tanks and additional armour. The Hellcat quickly gained nicknames like "ace maker". The payload options helped transformed the Hellcat into a multi-role fighter that propelled it to legendary status. During its service life, the F6F was credited with the destruction of over 5,200 aircraft. It remained in service as late as 1954.
One of the best single-seater carrier-based fighters of World War II was the Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat. The Hellcat owes its existence to the long string of failures experienced by the F4U Corsair. The Corsair was meant to replace the F4F Wildcat, but the prototype was full of flaws, as were the first production models. So, it was decided that a modification of the F4F Wildcat would be designed to satisfy the needs of the U.S. Navy until the arrival of the Corsair. Thankfully, things did not go according to plan. The "temporary substitute" performed amazingly well against the A6M Zero and garnered too much praise to be cast aside. Production of the F6F continued well after the Corsair arrived and continued after the war. The F6F would still be active during many conflicts to come.

The F6F-3 was known for its superb speed and above-average manoeuvrability, and, according to official statistics, Hellcats destroyed 5,156 enemy planes, 75% of all kills scored by the US naval air force in World War II.

Production of the F6F continued until 1949, and 12,275 F6Fs (including 4,402 F6F-3s) were produced. The F6F was the most widely-used American carrier fighter in World War II.
The name is a rank rank British bomber Battle-rating. It was introduced in Update 1.75 "La Résistance".

The PAGENAME is an export version of the American bomber SB2U, various modifications of which were released from 1936-1941. Since 1941 the PAGENAME was transferred to Great Britain under the Lend-Lease program in World War II. The most important difference between SB2U-2 and PAGENAME is the armament. The PAGENAME has 4 x 7.7mm Machine guns , while the SB2U-2 has 2 x 7.7. Due to the small number of such aircraft, they were not actively used in combat operations. Most of them was used as a training aircraft. The last aircraft was withdrawn from service in Great Britain in 1944.

The PAGENAME is a slow, but well-armed bomber. Due to the weak engine, which is not enough for such large two-seater bomber, its speed qualities are quite low. The aircraft has good armament that allows it to perform its tasks. Four offensive-mounted Brownings and one more as a defensive weapon that allows the PAGENAME to attack most opponents on this BR. The PAGENAME has good bomb armament, which allows it to attack ground targets. Dive bombers are hard to use against ground vehicles in realistic battles, but with practice it gets easier.

A total of 49 PAGENAME were produced.
Modifications and economy
Specs-Economy

Weaponry upgrades and engine should be prioritized with this aircraft, due to its role as an attacker. Its two primary roles are lugging bombs where they need to be in the minimal amount of time possible and then using them to inflict maximum damage. The FSBC mk.5 gives quite an upgrade to the aircraft, replacing the 100 lb bombs (mediocre at best) with the more powerful 250 lb bombs. However, the FLBC mk 1 is a novelty, at best, and only really useful when lugging bombs onto bases in Operation mode in RB. However, the V-156-B1 is a very bad choice for such a role, and thus, it should be disregarded.

A good research pathway is FSBC mk.5 --> Offensive 7 mm Belts --> New 7 mm MGs --> Defensive 7 mm Belts --> Engine --> New 7 mm MGs (Turret) --> Engine Injection. Anything after that is fair game. However, the FLBC mk.1 should be left until last, due to its uselessness in battles.

Armaments
Specs-Avia-Armaments
Offensive armament
Specs-Avia-Offensive
<!-- Describe the offensive armament of the aircraft, if any. Describe how effective the cannons and machine guns are in a battle, and also what belts or drums are better to use. If there is no offensive weaponry, delete this subsection. -->
Browning (7.7 mm)

The PAGENAME is armed with:

* 4 x 7.7 mm Browning machine guns, wing-mounted (1,000 rpg = 4,000 total).

Really good armament for a bomber. This weapon is enough to successfully destroy enemy aircraft in frontal attacks. The most effective belts are Universal and Stealth.

Suspended armament
Specs-Avia-Suspended
<!-- Describe the aircraft's suspended armament: additional cannons under the wings, bombs, rockets and torpedoes. This section is especially important for bombers and attackers. If there is no suspended weaponry remove this subsection. -->

The PAGENAME can be outfitted with the following ordnance:

* 1 x 500 lb AN-M64A1 bomb + 2 x 100 lb AN-M30A1 bombs (700 lb total)
* 1 x 500 lb AN-M64A1 bomb + 2 x 250 lb AN-M57 bombs (1,000 lb total)
* 1 x 1,000 lb AN-M65A1 bomb (1,000 lb total)

For base-bombing, the 1 x 500 lb + 2 x 100 lb set-up is capable of destroying 70% of a base, while the 1 x 500 lb + 2 x 250 lb and 1 x 1,000 lb set-ups are capable of destroying one base.

Defensive armament
Specs-Avia-Defensive
<!-- Defensive armament with turret machine guns or cannons, crewed by gunners. Examine the number of gunners and what belts or drums are better to use. If defensive weaponry is not available, remove this subsection. -->
Browning (7.7 mm)

The PAGENAME is defended by:

* 1 x 7.7 mm Browning machine gun, dorsal turret (600 rpg).

A standard defensive armament normally seen at the battle-rating, the one machine gun allows pilot some self-defense opportunities to destroy pursuing aircraft. The most effective belt is Universal.

Usage in battles
<!-- Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB). -->

The V-156-B1 is easily one of the more powerful aircraft in the lower battle ratings and can be an absolute monster at low battle rated arcade matches due to its monoplane design, payload, and a large number of offensive machine guns. It is adequate for grinding at low ranks due to its low repair cost and versatility. It can gladly function as both a fighter and an attacker, and once dumping bombs, is capable of Boom & Zooming enemies in the vicinity. In addition, it has airbrakes in the form of dive brakes, which come in useful when landing, attacking ground targets or attempting to shake off an enemy. Although you have a turret, you should not rely on it to be able to destroy fighters on its own - it is good at fending off fighters and keeping newer and/or more cautious players at bay, but it will only be able to shoot down fighters on its own by sheer luck. Your frontal armament, however, is more powerful - and with the usage of airbrakes at critical moments in the fight, such as when the enemy is close to you and approaching from the rear, you can use your airbrakes while reducing your throttle to zero to induce what is known as an 'overshoot'- forcing the enemy behind you to zoom over you instead of staying on your tail by means of a sudden speed decrease. This puts the enemy in front of you and allows you to use your four frontal machine guns to shoot down the lightly-armoured enemies you face at this battle rating.

Arcade Ground Strike maps - where the aim is to destroy the enemy's ground troops, and often, dogfights happen over ground targets at low altitudes - are where this aircraft will excel most. A suggested strategy is to use the aircraft as a dive-bomber in arcade battles, using your superior altitude and therefore speed advantages (you start in the bomber spawn) to hit ground targets before zooming back towards friendlies, or waiting until the fighters have started engaging, and then attack ground targets. The aircraft (at stock payload) has two 100 lb bombs and one 500 lb bomb. At these low BRs, your bombs will annihilate enemy armoured car and AAA formations, and your guns are nigh-upon-unstoppable at this BR. Use "Universal" or "Tracer" belts for best effect.

While waiting for payload reload, go for enemy planes. British, German and Japanese aircraft are particularly vulnerable to your attacks due to their relatively low armament in a head-on engagement and lack of any and all armour protection. Soviet biplanes (the I-15s) will have heavier or equal armament, and American monoplanes will be harder to kill than biplanes due to robust construction and having similar speeds. At a BR of 1.3, the best opposition you will face are P-40s, Bf-109E-1s, Ki-43s and H-75s. All of these aircraft have large amounts of machine guns with exhaustive ammo pools, and if they can catch up to you, you're likely going to be shot down by the opposition, since you don't have the performance to fight them without assistance. If you feel lucky, you can duke it out by baiting them into a turn fight, where your good turn radius with landing flaps active can make you the victor in the situation. Never rely upon your single rear gun to keep you safe- at best it can only really function as a deterrent to keep fighters at bay. Always keep an eye on your six, and when you finish a ground attack run, look around and see if anything's coming before you go in again. If you see a fighter coming for you and can manage to turn towards them enough that you can get a firing solution on them, you can probably win. British 7.7 mm guns are among the best in the game in terms of raw fire chance values and penetration, and if loaded with the "Tracer" belt- a full mix of Incendiary Tracer (essentially a standard incendiary bullet with a tracer element) and Armour-Piercing Incendiary (Usually the most damaging type of bullet in any given gun) in 50% proportion to each other- they can shred through any air target at a battle rating of 1.3.

A suggested loadout is a minimum load of fuel (33 minutes, more than enough for arcade battles or realistic battles), Universal or Tracer <!--why use these belts - expand here, help new players understand why they are superior to Default or Stealth--> 7 mm belts on both defensive and offensive 7 mm guns (maximal AP-I ammunition) and the payload of 2 x 250 lb bombs and 1 x 500 lb bomb.

Pros:

* Manoeuvrable
* Dual role dive bomber/attacker
* Good diver
* Decent bomb load options
* Four offensive machine guns can destroy unarmoured ground targets and other aircraft
* Good payload- The 500 lbs and 250 lbs bombs are more than enough to penetrate and destroy enemy tanks
* Defensive machine gun keeps enemy fighters at bay and has a lot of ammunition

Cons:

* Large target
* Slow speed
* Weak defensive armament
* Difficult to dogfight with
* Rather long take off run
* Not particularly fast, easy prey for low-rank monoplanes and even some biplanes
* Not very manoeuvrable, especially with payloads equipped
* Poor elevator response, especially at high speeds; this means diving attacks from a high altitude (e.g. in RB) are hard to pull off and will require some planning in order to avoid ripping your wings off and/or compressing
* The bomber only has landing flaps, that cannot be activated when airbrakes are on, and vice-versa
* Low cockpit visibility due to the "birdcage" construction and the fact that the rear cockpit view is quite limited due to the limited traverse of the rear gun
* Stock payload has the weak 100 lbs bombs which have a low armour destruction radius (2 m) and require some skill to get on target without missing or not penetrating
* Single .303 inch defensive machine gun is better than nothing, but only really serves as a deterrent as the plane will probably be dead by the time the gunner has the chance to knock out the enemy hostile since you only have the one gun

The V-156-B1 was an export variant of the American SBU Vindicator dive bomber that saw service with the Royal Navy.

The V-156F-3 was a variant in service with the French Navy, and 50 more were ordered in March 1940. Initial delivery was delayed as the SBU was in production for the US Marine Corps. Delivery was planned for March 1941, the delay due to ongoing production orders for the United States Marine Corps, but the fall of France in June 1940 caused the order to be shifted to the UK. In the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm (FAA), the V-156-B1 was known as the Chesapeake Mk.I. The first Chesapeake flew on February 26, 1941, and by the end of March, the British had accepted the V-156-B1.

In British service, the V-156-B1 was intended for anti-submarine patrols, but it became apparent that the aircraft lacked the performance to carry the ordnance necessary for that role, causing the British officials relegating to defensive roles such as carrier escort tasks. Eventually, they were removed from frontline service and used as a training aircraft until the Fairey Swordfish replaced it in that role.
The name is a rank rank French bomber Battle-rating. It was introduced in Update 1.75 "La Résistance".

The SB2U-2 was developed in the early 1930s and was sold to the French as a V-156-F. This aircraft served on the French aircraft carrier Béarn, however at the outbreak of the war, the carrier was deemed too slow for service and both squadrons of V-156-F aircraft were transferred to land-based duty. The V-156-F was used continually until the French Armistice.

This aircraft is a fairly slow aircraft, but sturdy. Built as a dive-bomber, it excels at diving down above a target to release its bombs. The V-156-F is one of the only early aircraft in War Thunder which features dive brakes (key-bound to 'H' by default) to aid in slowing down during a dive, thereby helping prevent the ripping off of the wings in RB and SB. The V-156-F differs from its American siblings (SB2U-2/-3) in that it has additional air brakes mounted on the upper and lower surfaces of the wings which extend 90 degrees to the wing when utilized. Wing mounted machine guns allow for this aircraft to strafe softer ground or water targets while waiting for bombs to reload (AB). The rear-facing dorsal gunner helps to ward off enemy attackers, however it is not a game changer for this aircraft.

Flight performance
Specs-Avia-Flight
<!-- Describe how the aircraft behaves in the air. Speed, manoeuvrability, acceleration and allowable loads - these are the most important characteristics of the vehicle. -->

Similar to its American and British counterparts, the V-156-F suffers from rather abysmal flight characteristics. It has a mediocre top speed of ~300 km/h at sea level stock, and slightly higher once spaded. However, the aircraft's main performance problem is its lack of engine power. The poor engine power output results in a terrible climb rate and almost-nonexistent acceleration. This means that the plane is realistically limited to terrain-hugging bombing runs as the plane will take half the match to climb to bombing altitude. As well, the engine overheats quite quickly when applying WEP meaning that the maximum throttle setting should not be used too often.

The aircraft's manoeuvring characteristics are also lacking, but have a few quirks. The plane has a poor turn rate at low speeds (<250 km/h) but can turn very quickly when travelling at higher speeds - in fact, it may be able to out-turn some fighters when entering the turn at 300-350 km/h. However, it cannot continuously turn at that rate, as its poor energy retention results in it bleeding speed quite quickly. The plane's flight controls are quite responsive, but will suffer from significant buffeting and lock-up past 550 km/h.
Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB). -->

The V-156-F is a slow aircraft which leads it to having two options. The first is to hug the terrain. While flying to your target of choice (AAA sites, AA Vehicles or bases), fly along the terrain, utilize what hills and valleys there are to fly through. Time on target may be limited before the enemy gets there so line up your bombing run and drop bombs. This aircraft can manoeuvre fairly well, utilizing elevator and rudder controls and a nice turn time (upgraded) of 22 seconds (RB), you can quickly flip this aircraft around and return to ground attacking targets you just flew over.

The second option will be to gain altitude. Going too high will render your bombs ineffective. The idea here is to gain several thousand feet, fly towards your target of choice and then dive on it. During your dive, your aircraft will build up speed, to prevent too much speed build up and control stiffening, reduce your throttle and engage dive brakes (h). This will allow you a controlled descent and the ability to line up your target easier, the unfortunate downside is that now you are slowly moving in a straight line, an easy target for enemy fighters. Once you swoop on your target and release your bombs, engage full throttle and retract dive brakes.

Although this aircraft is slow, it can be utilized to attack fighters if in a pinch. The manoeuvrability of this aircraft along with its slow speed can aid in forcing an attacking enemy to overshoot or underestimate the capabilities of this aircraft.

* Large target
* Slow speed
* Weak defensive armament
* Armament is smaller calibre than its American and British counterparts
* Worse payload options than its American and British counterparts (max payload 200 kg)
* Rather long take off run
* Only has landing flaps
* The air brakes are the flaps, meaning that landing flaps cannot be deployed when the airbrakes are, and vice versa

The V-156-F had its origins in a French variant of the American Vought SB2U Vindicator carrier-based dive bomber. The aircraft was intended to operate as a naval dive bomber off of the French aircraft carrier Béarn. The aircraft underwent a series of major modifications before entering service with the French - the airbrakes were changed to include outerwing split brake flaps, the avionics were replaced with French versions, and the armament was changed to consist of French Mle 1923 machine guns. The aircraft also had its "bomb crutch" bomb displacement system removed due to security reasons, and was replaced by French Alkan bomb sets.

The French government ordered two batches of 20 aircraft for the Aéronavale, which were delivered by late 1939. The aircraft were shipped via Canada to avoid being embargoed due to the US Neutrality act. The first of these aircraft formed Escadrille AB1, the first squadron to operate from the aircraft carrier Béarn. When the old carrier was deemed too obsolete for active service, the aircraft were moved ashore and served as land-based bombers.

In November of 1939, the aircraft started making regular air patrols over the English Channel. Its first combat action occured in early 1940 when French V-156s were ordered to bomb a number of vital bridges in northern France. The aircraft managed to do significant damage despite the fact that the pilots hadn't been trained in ground attack; however, 5 aircraft were lost when Bf-109Es intercepted the bomber formation. The aircraft also assisted in the Dunkirk evacuations, and sank an Italian submarine. However, their success was rather short-lived, as the many of the aircraft were shot down; by the time of the French Armstice in June of 1940, only a few aircraft remained.
The Avenger Mk II is a single-engine torpedo bomber. Its dual forward-facing 12.7 mm MGs can be used to take out AA, artillery and vehicles while its 4 x 500 lb bombs can be put to good use against pillboxes, tanks or even ships. Defended very well, the Avenger has a dorsal turret with very good elevation and traverse angles armed with a single 12.7 mm that can inflict serious damage against enemy aircraft on your tail. The ventral turret has a single 7.62 mm MG, recommended to be equipped with AP belts to make up for its small calibre. Enemy fighters on your tail won't last long against the defensive armament. There is a dead spot behind the tail because the ventral turret doesn't have a huge amount of elevation, be careful not let a pursuing opponent manoeuvre there and change path to ensure you've always got your guns on target.

The Avenger is also a very durable aircraft, it can soak up a lot of damage and keep on going - though the ventral gunner is fairly exposed to enemy fire. The engine is a big target and is easily damaged in head-on attacks, so avoid those at all costs. In a pitch, the avenger can be used as a fighter but its low speed and limited manoeuvrability make it better suited for bombing ground or naval units. However, the bad frontal visibility below the nose makes it fairly challenging to land, though the cockpit visibility is overall good.
The Avenger Mk II is a British variant of the American Grumman TBF-1 Avenger. Only 402 were given to British, under the lend-lease program. It was internally designated by Grumman as the TBF-1B. The British once they received them, initially designated it the Tarpon TR.Mk 1. Then, later on, it was re-designated as the Avenger. The Avenger is a single engine monoplane. It consists of, a three-man crew. Its primary role, was a torpedo bomber. However, could also be used as an ordinary bomber.

The only difference between the Avenger to the US TBF-1 versions is The installation of British oxygen systems and gun sights.

Avengers were first assigned to HMS Victorious in 1943; -832 squadron 1 and later on to serve in 845 squadron 1. They were supplied from January through to February 1943 to the British government. The Majority of these planes were returned to the U.S. Navy in June 1943.
Navigation-First-Simple-Line
The Grumman Avenger Mk.I was a single engine naval torpedo bomber/strike aircraft which first entered service with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm in 1943. Designed as a replacement for the US Navy's Douglas Devastator, the Avenger first flew in August 1941 before the first examples left the production line in February 1942. The Avenger's operational debut at the Battle of Midway in June 1942 was less than stellar, with five out of six being destroyed without being able to sink a single enemy ship.

Under the lend-lease agreement, Avengers were supplied to the British Fleet Air Arm in January 1943, first equipping 832 Naval Air Squadron. Powered by a 1850 hp Wright Cyclone radial engine, the Avenger Mk.I was capable of reaching speeds of some 260 mph and had an operating range of 1020 miles; 1910 miles if extra fuel was loaded in lieu of ordnance. The Avenger was armed with two .50 calibre machine guns in the wings, a single .30 calibre gun in a ventral position and a further .50 calibre gun in a power operated turret. Its offensive load was a single 22-inch torpedo, up to 2,000 lbs of bombs or eight 60 lb rockets under the wings.

For the first year of its life in British service, Avengers were known as Grumman 'Tarpons' following the Fleet Air Arm's tradition of naming its naval aircraft after fish or birds. However, from January 1944 onwards the name 'Avenger' was re-adopted to standardize with US forces. Avengers were constructed in the United States by both Grumman and also under license by General Motors, termed the TBF-1 and TBM-1 respectively; in Royal Naval service these were known as the Avenger Mk.I and Avenger Mk.II.

By the end of 1943, eight Avenger squadrons were active in the Fleet Air Arm, this number rising to fifteen squadrons by the end of the war. Some 1,000 out of nearly 10,000 Avengers built would serve with the Royal Navy. Avengers were employed in several roles across a variety of theatres, including mine laying and Anti-Submarine Warfare in the Atlantic, anti-shipping strikes in the build up to D-Day and Convoy escort from small escort carriers in the icy waters of the Arctic on convoy runs to the Soviet Union. However, it was in the Far East with the British Eastern Fleet and British Pacific Fleet which the British operated Avengers would see their most impressive contribution, culminating in their finest hour during the Battle of Palembang in January 1945, where Avengers formed the majority of the offensive capability of the Fleet Air Arm's strike package in a series of attacks on Japanese held oil refineries in Sumatra; Avengers of 820, 849, 854 and 857 NAS were responsible for crippling the output of two major oil refineries, causing a severe blow to the supply for Japanese aviation fuel. British Avengers were involved in strikes against mainland Japan by the time the war ended, and subsequent variants of the Avenger would continue to serve with the Royal Navy up until 1959. The Avenger also saw wartime service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force and postwar service with the Royal Canadian Navy.

Flight performance is often a secondary criteria for an attack bomber. Focus on improved armament, especially the Improved torpedo (Mk.13-1 Case) that makes attacking ships much easier. Machine gun upgrades may not be needed initially, as the stock M2 Browning does well enough. The turrets, however, profit from upgrades, gaining longer and more accurate fire.

Of course, performance upgrades don't hurt (Compressor, Engine and Engine Injection are often essential pick-ups). Airframe and Cover can be used to further bolster the durable aircraft. Other upgrades can be scheduled toward the end.
As with all torpedo bombers, maintain low altitude, high speed, and fighter cover. The optimal distance for launching a torpedo is 1 km from the target. Engage enemy ships from directly ahead or astern which makes "leading" the target much easier. If torpedo bombing is not an option, the TBF-1C can carry bombs for attacking ground targets.

The Avenger lacks much significant offensive armament, but in a pinch it can serve as a backup fighter. This aircraft is not particularly fast or manoeuvrable, but continuing the trend among mid-tier American aircraft, it is extremely durable. Do not attack enemy aircraft head-on as the TBF-1C's guns are wing-mounted (causing convergence issues) and the large engine or pilot can be knocked out quickly by enemy fire.

Fly low and fast, head towards your target, drop your ordnance and bug out. However, if there are no hostile fighters in the area, you can destroy some enemy ground installations, e.g. AA, light vehicles, landing crafts and anti-tank positions after this.

Despite being a light bomber/torpedo bomber, the Avenger comes with a bombsight, just like the old TBD Devastator, albeit without the telescopic sight in the pilot's cockpit. This makes precision bombing in Realistic battles possible, as even novice pilots will be able to drop the 500 kg bombs with excellent accuracy. Once you spot a target, fly out about 1.5 km horizontally from the target (remember to keep focus on said target and its general location while being aware of any obstacles in your way), then begin to slowly fly over said target. Open the bomb bay and switch to the bombsight view, then drop your ordnance.

Simulator mode

Hands-off carrier take-off (Auto engine control): Start engine, flaps: raised, elevator trim: 0%, aileron trim: 0%, rudder trim: 14% right, WEP throttle, hands off controls until you lift off the carrier.

Level-type carrier landing final approach (Auto engine control): Drop any secondary weapons you may still have, make sure your alignment with the carrier and heading are good for landing, use your stick to hold an altitude of 40 m (120 ft), slow down below 200 km/h (125 mph / 108 kt), elevator trim: 2%, aileron trim: 18%, rudder trim: 0%, after gently slowing down to 123 km/h (77 mph / 67 kt) set throttle to about 55% (you will have to adjust throttle a lot, though), just before the carrier (less than 1 km (0.62 mi)) cut throttle and reset all trim to 0%, landing should be easy after that.
Pros:

* Robust construction
* Adaptive secondary ordnance for different maps e.g. naval or ground based operations
* Very good vision from pilot's seat in cockpit
* Very stable
* Good defensive gunner coverage
* Tail hook for carrier-based missions

Cons:

* Limited bomb selection for a bomber
* Wing mounted 12.7 mm machine guns factoring in convergence
* Poor low altitude performance, especially when turning
* Heavy and fairly slow
* Big target at low altitude
* Ventral gunner has little protection, easily knocked out
* Only has landing flaps
* Touchy controls, tends to over-respond to small control inputs (SB)
Significant engagements involving the TBF-1

Battle Of Midway - June 4, 1942 <br>
The Battle of Midway was a massive naval engagement that occurred 6 months after Pearl Harbour. Initiated by the Japanese, the attack on Midway was supposed to be a surprise attack that repeated their success at Pearl Harbor. However, due to American efforts in cracking Japanese communication codes in the days and weeks prior to the operation, the American defenders were warned about the attack far in advance.

The first combat mission of the TBF-1 was on June 4, 1942 at the battle of Midway. Only six TBF-1s were available and were initially attached to torpedo squadron VT-8. All apart from one (with significant damage) were shot down during the battle.

Eastern Solomons - August 24-25, 1942 <br>
IJN Admiral Yamamoto's infamous naval counter-strike against the US. The opposing naval forces met; the US Navy had only two carriers: USS Saratoga (VT-8) and USS Enterprise (VT-3). The Imperial Japanese Navy had the carriers: IJN Shōkaku, IJN Zuikaku, and light carrier IJN Ryūjō. By August, TBF Avengers had been delivered to the two US ships. Overall, 26 TBF-1s from VT-8 and VT-3 were launched during this engagement. Their torpedoes helped sink IJN Ryūjō for the loss of seven Avengers.

Guadalcanal - Nov, 12-13, 1942 <br>
Avengers from USS Enterprise (CV-6) crippled and assisted in the destruction of the 37,000 ton battleship IJN Hiei. Guadalcanal was the last large-scale Japanese naval attack and the Hiei was the first Japanese battleship sunk by US forces. TBF-1s were further used by Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 131 (VMSB-131).
The TBF Torpedo Bomber was created to replace the outdated Devastators, which suffered from insufficient speed and short range. The TBF, also known as the Avenger, had good range and load capacity and the ability to carry cargo inside the fuselage. It was an ideal solution for a carrier-based transport aircraft. During the war, the Avenger earned a reputation as a very accurate bomber.

One unique feature of the TBF-1 was its wings. After the plane landed, they were folded back onto the side of the fuselage and parallel to it. This was done to solve the problem of the insufficient height of aircraft carrier hangar decks, which conflicted with standard upward-folding wings. Thanks to hydraulic actuators, the wings could be retracted or extended by the pilot in just a few seconds, without any help from ground personnel.

The TBF was widely used during World War II by not only U.S. forces but also those of Great Britain and New Zealand. In Great Britain, the aircraft was named the Tarpon and was one of the most extensively used British torpedo-bombers.
Modifications and economy
Specs-Economy

Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB). -->

Pros:

* Robust construction
* Adaptive secondary ordnance for different maps e.g. naval or ground based operations
* Very good vision from pilot's seat in cockpit
* Very stable
* Good defensive gunner coverage
* Tail hook for carrier-based missions

Cons:

* Limited bomb selection for a bomber
* Wing mounted 12.7 mm machine guns factoring in convergence
* Poor low altitude performance, especially when turning
* Relatively slow
* Ventral gunner has little protection, easily knocked out
* Only has landing flaps

In Great Britain, the aircraft was named the Tarpon and was one of the most extensively used British torpedo-bombers.

;Arcade battles

Pros and cons
<!-- Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective". -->

Pros:

* Good manoeuvrability for a bomber
* Robust construction
* Adaptive secondary ordnance for different maps e.g. naval and ground-based operations
* Very good visibility in the cockpit

Cons:

* Limited bomb selection for a bomber
* Heavy and fairly slow: big target at low altitude
* Hard to land for inexperienced pilots
* Like the American TBF-1C, only has landing flaps
