The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a premium rank {{Specs|rank}} German bomber {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.83 &amp;quot;Masters of the Sea&amp;quot;]]. It has no relation of the [[Ju 88 (Family)|Ju 88]], [[Ju 188 A-2|Ju 188]], or [[Ju 388 J|Ju 388]] despite the &amp;quot;88&amp;quot; in its name.&lt;br /&gt;

The {{PAGENAME}} was designed as a Schnellbomber (fast bomber) with the purpose to replace the current Junkers Ju 88 bombers in service. Though a potent bomber in its own right, the Ju 88 suffered what ended up being crippling features such as a relatively small internal bomb bay requiring extra ordnance to be ferried on external hardpoints which ultimately increased the aircraft's drag coefficient, resulting in less efficient flight characteristics.&lt;br /&gt;

Though a contest was held to choose the next generation of medium schnellbombers, the RLM had already determined the Junkers {{PAGENAME}} was the clear winner and even let Focke-Wulf, Dornier and Henschel continue to pursue their prototypes in vain. Out of the gate what caught the eye of the RLM was that the {{PAGENAME}} was to be slightly larger than the Ju 88, the new prototype contained a pressurized cabin allowing for higher altitude flying, faster speeds, further range, excellent defensive capabilities and a much larger bomb payload. Such hope was put into this aircraft that it was slated to replace all bombers within the Luftwaffe inventory.&lt;br /&gt;

Though the aircraft itself was a huge success, the engines and landing gear ended up crippling the development of the aircraft resulting in only a handful of prototypes being built with a few being hurriedly outfitted with defensive weapons and used as a reconnaissance bomber. One interesting feature of this aircraft is the usage of remote-controlled gun turrets much like those found in the American [[P-61C-1|P-61]] and [[A-26 (Family)|A-26]] strike-fighter/attackers. The guns operated outside of the pressurized cockpit and allowed them to be placed in areas which more efficiently defensively protected this aircraft.  Any fighter aircraft attempting to tail this bomber will receive a rude awakening when their aircraft is all of the sudden full of holes, the engine has quit, fluids are leaking, and the ground is approaching at an extremely quick rate showing no sign of stopping!&lt;br /&gt;

The key for the {{PAGENAME}} to be a Schnellbomber is to actually deliver its payload to a target and for an aircraft its size and speed, it can deliver up to an amazing 3,600 kg (8,000 lb) payload, easily enough to put a serious dent in the enemy's bases or anti-aircraft vehicles and tanks. Smaller payloads can also include up to 36 x 50 kg (110 lb) bombs which can be very effective when it comes to carpet bombing columns of vehicles or taking out anti-aircraft artillery and other vehicles and pillboxes scattered around the map. Payloads such as this can provide area denial to airfields in matches where aircraft need to land to capture the point.&lt;br /&gt;

For those pilots who have flown many slow and heavy bombers just to get a decent payload to the target will be thoroughly refreshed when getting behind the controls of the {{PAGENAME}}. Quickly apparent is the speed of this bomber. As its type suggests, Schnellbomber, this aircraft is fast, topping out just over 600 kph (375 mph) and agile enough to manoeuvre when attacked as not to be a &amp;quot;sitting duck&amp;quot; like many of the larger contemporary bombers such as the American [[B-24D-25-CO|B-24]] and the Italian [[P.108B serie 2|P.108B]] which are easily 120 kph (75 mph) slower and much less agile making for a tempting target even for the least experienced fighter pilot to attempt to eliminate.&lt;br /&gt;

For many aircraft, speed is life, but speed for this Schnellbomber not only is life but what gets the ordnance to the target. The {{PAGENAME}} does have a pressurized cabin which allows the aircraft to fly at higher altitudes where it can bomb bases with accuracy with 1,800 kg (4,000 lb) bombs, but this bomber is also very capable at flying lower altitudes and even terrain hugging where it can release up to 36 x 50 kg bombs on unsuspecting vehicles before they have a chance to scatter or hardened anti-aircraft structures filling the sky with flak. The {{PAGENAME}} also has the ability to operate as a dive bomber given that it has dive brakes in the wings which will help slow its speed and maintain its heading during  a dive to ensure a relatively smooth bombing run, after bombs have been dropped, the aircraft can retract the flaps and power up and move onto the next target.&lt;br /&gt;

There's usually 2 ways to play Ju 288 C: stay high or dive. Most people play Ju 288 C dive and take as many bases for themselves. When diving, try to watch your IAS and keep it at around 400 mph, don't go over that speed. The second way to play is stay high, when staying high, you will see enemy bombers that you can hunt with your superior fire power. When bomber hunting, try to get next to them, match their speed, and gun the hell out of them. Usually bomber hunting will cause you to sustain some damage.&lt;br /&gt;

As a bomber, you spawn at a higher altitude, where you can use this advantage to dive to the base you want to destroy. However, do not exceed 640 km/h ( 400 mph)! A good idea for more savvy pilots would be to use the Manual Engine Control to turn off automatic radiators and fully open them, allowing you near unlimited WEP without overheating and letting you keep as much altitude as possible for a possible emergency dive away from enemy fighters.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For payload always take the 1,800kg SC-1800 'Satan' bombs, they will oneshot any single HP base and twoshot any other base. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To identify them, single HP bases spawn in all at once, and are usually found in sets of 3. Double HP bases however spawn in one base at a time, and are almost always found in sets of 4.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Double HP maps are the best, as you can gain 20,000 silver lions per base destroyed with premium, double what you usually make shooting down a fighter with the defensive armament, and you will never see an enemy aircraft on your first run on a double HP map.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Thanks to the speed gained during the dive, it will be easy enough to get back to your airfields to reload your bombs without encountering a fighter on the first run.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you have a good team, capable of keeping the enemy fighters occupied,  land at the closest airfield usually found on those maps and if fully repaired J out and come back in to quickly rearm your bombs for another run.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Continuous runs can net you up to 3 to 4 bases, and with premium net you over 100k lions and up to 200k lions on very good matches.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On the way, if you meet enemy planes, try and identify the enemy aircraft. If it is faster or you are unable to get past him, turn away and let him face your full rear defensive armament. If he is slower, and you are able to get past him, you can possibly keep flying as long as you keep watch for any incoming fire. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In general however, you will want to face away from any incoming enemy to make use of both your extreme speed to outrun them or your good defensive armament to shoot them down.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If the enemy behind you dives to pick up speed you should also dive slightly at 5-10 degrees to gain your own speed whilst keeping him behind you.&lt;br /&gt;

Be careful to keep the enemy within the 20mm engagement angle, as the 2 bottom mounted 15mm guns don't usually do enough damage to down an enemy plane whilst the 20mm only requires a few good hits to kill.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1939, the Junkers company began work on a new bomber that was supposed to replace the Ju 88 bombers in service at the time. The new aircraft had to surpass the predecessor across all parameters. The plan was to fit the upcoming model with new, more powerful engines, significantly boost the firepower of the defensive armament, and, of course, increase the payload. The first prototypes took to the skies when the Jumo 222A/B engines, which the aircraft were supposed to be equipped with, had not been installed yet. Instead, the BMW engines were used. Extensive work began on the experimental models of the new series, which received the designation Ju 288, with the aim of enhancing the bomber's characteristics. This explains why the first eight prototypes were significantly different from one another.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1942 the Ministry of Aviation made a ruling to include a fourth member in the aircraft crew, which demanded changes to be made to the build of the cockpit. Vehicles of the second-generation prototype series with the letter &amp;quot;B&amp;quot; in their designation had their wingspan increased and their defensive armament changed. The Jumo 222A/B engines still required more work to be done and thus weren't installed on the Ju 288Bs. The Ju 288Cs, the third-generation prototypes of the series, were fitted with the Daimler Benz DB 605 engines, requiring the nacelles to be changed. Furthermore, the wingspan of the aircraft was increased even more and the defensive armament received another modification – this time, a lower rear turret was added. The Ju 288C's first test flights began in the spring of 1943. Junkers even prepared three versions of the new bomber build for serial production, each with a unique armament set. However, in June, the engineering department notified the aircraft manufacturer to discontinue work on the Ju 288 due to a lack of resources required to produce the new aircraft. Tests on the Ju 288 continued right up to 1944 – the aircraft even went on a number of combat flights. However, in the end the bomber was never approved for serial production.&lt;br /&gt;

With World War II on the brink of starting, Sweden realized that their air fleet was outdated and many foreign options fell through either through unacceptable offers, embargoes or unrealistic transit times. SAAB was already at maximum capacity building SAAB 17 fighters and SAAB 18 bombers and could not help. To bypass this problem, a new company and factory were setup (Royal Air Administration Factory in Stockholm, FFVS) to build the J 22 fighter. This fighter was relatively straight forward as a steel frame and plywood covered aircraft of a conventional build. The main landing gear retracted into the fuselage and everything was built simplistically to aid in the expedient building along with easy maintenance.&lt;br /&gt;

Due to the necessity of needing engines for this aircraft, an unlicensed copy of the Pratt &amp;amp; Whitney R-1830 engine was built and utilised (though later the license fees were paid). The simplicity of the aircraft not only made it a dream to build and maintain but for the pilots which flew it, they stated that it was well-liked and was very responsive resulting in good manoeuvrability. Though problems typical to tail-dragger aircraft, forward visibility while taxiing was terrible and it was necessary to lock in the tail wheel on takeoff to prevent the aircraft from entering into a ground-loop and crashing. Pilots found that the {{PAGENAME}} could hold its own in a mock dogfight with Swedish P-51s (J 26) as long as they remained under 4,000 m (13,000 ft), anywhere above that, the fighter began to struggle and lose any equality or advantage it had over the Mustangs and required the pilot to really work the controls just to be anywhere close to competitive. While this may only seem to have been a slight increase, the difference is remarkable because it allowed for the pilots to relax a bit their preparation and attack on enemy aircraft, giving them more time to plan and execute the attack then calculate convergence and drop rate of their ammunition.&lt;br /&gt;

It is still necessary for the pilot to factor in convergence for their guns due to all four being mounted in the wings. With all the same calibre, bullet drop can be more predictable since they are will all start to lose energy and drop relatively at the same time. With this consistency, pilots which prefer to attack aircraft from a bit more of a distance can set their convergence from 350 m – 600 m with good results and some with experience to be set as much as 800 m. Though, much like the J 22A, having the convergence set from 250 m to 400 m and attacking within the 200 m to 350 m range will rain down a hail storm of bullets intent on dismantling or destroying critical components of the enemy aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;

Like many Soviet aircraft which were devoid of any turbochargers or superchargers, the {{PAGENAME}} is best flown between low altitudes and 4,000 m (13,000 ft). To effectively relate, flying above 4,000 m in this aircraft is akin to flying a stock aircraft in a normal situation, not as fast, not as manoeuvrable and not a powerful as it could be and an easier target for those aircraft which are.&lt;br /&gt;

At the lower altitudes, the {{PAGENAME}} can still be an effective fighter, attacker and bomber interceptor.&lt;br /&gt;

The {{PAGENAME}} can take advantage of its more powerful engine at the lower altitude and attack bombers and attackers which are inbound or lining up to drop their ordnance. Due to these bombers and attacker aircraft typically having defensive gunners, the {{PAGENAME}} pilot will need to find an angle of attack which exposes them the least while giving them the best opportunity to shoot off a wing or make a critical shot in a fuel tank, engine, oil cooler, water cooler or even knock out the pilot. Sitting behind these aircraft and shooing away is not a smart move as the {{PAGENAME}} is susceptible to lose its engine or take a hit in a fuel tank or worse, the pilot.&lt;br /&gt;

When attempting to Boom &amp;amp; Zoom a target, don’t get wrapped up in turning to fight immediately after attacking if you miss or don’t damage them as bad as hoped, it is best to speed away and set up for another attack when the advantage is once again in your possession. As World War started to break out in Europe in 1939, a nervous neutral Sweden watched as the Soviets attempted to advance on Finland and Germany amassing power and heading for France. Looking at its current air forces, the Swedish military realized their fighter aircraft, older Gloster Gladiator [[J8A|J 8]] biplane fighters were largely outdated when compared to up and coming Bf 109s and early Soviet fighters like the [[I-301]] (or later known as [[LaGG-3 (Family)|LaGG-3]]. With SAAB’s current production plant cranking out SAAB 17 reconnaissance/bombers with SAAB 18 bomber in development, no room, mechanics or design team personnel were available to spare for the development and creation of a modern fighter airplane for the Swedish Air Force.&lt;br /&gt;

Desperate for immediate aircraft, Sweden reached out to the United States with an interest in the Seversky P-35 (J 9) and the P-66 Vanguard (J 10) which almost 250 of these aircraft were ordered, however, as fate would have it, Germany invaded Norway in mid-1940 resulting in the United States halting the exporting of all weapons through an embargo with any foreign country with the exception of Great Britain. A new look cast light on the Finnish fighter the VL Myrsky and the Soviet Polikarpov I-16, however, the aircraft did not make the cut and did not meet the requirements that the Swedish military was looking for. Though the Mitsubishi [[A6M (Family)|A6M]] Zero was an option, attempting to deliver these from Japan was not a feasible option. Instead, a decision was made to build a local fighter, however as a stop-gap measure, several [[CR.42]] (J 11) and Reggiane [[Re.2000 G.A.|Re.2000]] (J 20) fighters were purchased.&lt;br /&gt;

The fuselage tapered from the front to a narrow rear frame ending at the tailplane where the vertical and horizontal stabilizers are located. The wings set low on the fuselage with the landing gear retracting into the fuselage as opposed to the wings on many European and Soviet aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;

However, the second version, the J 22B (or J 22 FBv “Förbättrad Beväpning” (improved armament)) was the same aircraft however, the two 8 mm machine guns were removed and replaced with two more 13.2 mm machine guns, for a total of four (two in each wing). Several were modified into reconnaissance aircraft, however later they were converted back into fighters; these were known as S 22-1 aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;

These aircraft were well-liked by pilots and even more well-liked by their maintainers due to their ease of maintenance, having enough parts on hand ensured these aircraft remained airworthy and ready to go. In an uptier however it will take at least two runs to destroy an airfield, but you can still rack up plenty of lions and research by heavily damaging it. &lt;br /&gt;

Against enemy aircraft that have seen and are heading towards you, you are generally better off turning to get as many guns on target as possible in order to have the best chance of a kill. In the mid 1930s, the U.S. Navy was eager to replace their outdated flying boats with newer models. In order to do so, the Navy started a competition between aircraft manufacturers, whose winner would receive a production contract with the Navy. &lt;br /&gt;

The Martin company submitted the designs on their four-engine Model 160 aircraft, which didn’t garner any significant interest from the Navy. However, Martin continued to work on the design, reworking it into a two-engine aircraft, designated Model 162. &lt;br /&gt;

This design proved to be a lot more successful, with the Navy quickly ordering for a prototype of the aircraft to be produced. Designated XPBM-1 “Mariner”, the prototype conducted its maiden flight in February 1939. The PBM-3 Mariner flying boats of the third series served very briefly during WW2, as nearly all PBM-3s from the first series were converted into unarmed transport machines shortly after their construction. Mariners were also used in small numbers by Great Britain, Australia, Argentina, Uruguay and the Netherlands. All of the bombs are contained in the nacelle-mounted bomb bays and won't have a large difference in manoeuvrability.&lt;br /&gt;

In RB, the PBM-3 should be used as a traditional heavy bomber, as with the addition of naval mines, the PBM-3 is capable of ending the game on airfield map as long as its not an uptier.&lt;br /&gt;

In a downtier, a single mine destroys both a normal and double HP base, and it takes merely 5 mines to destroy a full HP downtier airbase. From the start of the game simply fly around the main fighting, bomb whatever bases still remain after potential allies destroy them, then bomb the airfield for an easy victory. &lt;br /&gt;

In an uptier a single mine can still destroy a normal base, although it takes two for a double HP base, and it will take at least two runs to destroy an airfield, but you can still rack up plenty of lions and research by destroying the bases.&lt;br /&gt;

Against enemy aircraft that have seen and are heading towards you, you are generally better off turning to get as many guns on target as possible in order to have the best chance of a kill. Having access to the universal targets belt helps, as most aircraft in this tier have a weakness to fire.&lt;br /&gt;

In the mid 1930s, the U.S. Navy was eager to replace their outdated flying boats with newer models. In order to do so, the Navy started a competition between aircraft manufacturers, whose winner would receive a production contract with the Navy. &lt;br /&gt;

The Martin company submitted the designs on their four-engine Model 160 aircraft, which didn’t garner any significant interest from the Navy. However, Martin continued to work on the design, reworking it into a two-engine aircraft, designated Model 162. &lt;br /&gt;

This design proved to be a lot more successful, with the Navy quickly ordering for a prototype of the aircraft to be produced. Designated XPBM-1 “Mariner”, the prototype conducted its maiden flight in February 1939. Following successful trials, the aircraft was adopted by the USN as early as September 1939 and ordered into production.&lt;br /&gt;

In late 1940, Martin received a large order for more flying boats to be manufactured. However, with the company’s production capacity being reached, construction of these new machines was delayed. In the meantime, the PBM was further improved by installing new engines, increasing overall size and doubling payload capacity. The new PBM-3 Mariner entered production in 1941, with the first batch of 32 vehicles entering service in 1942.&lt;br /&gt;

The Mariners primarily served with the USN as coastal patrol aircraft before the outbreak of WW2. However, after the United States’ entry into WW2, Mariners were used in the anti-submarine role in the Atlantic and also took part in operations in the Pacific Theatre. &lt;br /&gt;

The PBM-3 Mariner flying boats of the third series served very briefly during WW2, as nearly all PBM-3s from the first series were converted into unarmed transport machines shortly after their construction. Nevertheless, the aircraft proved to be very successful and further models were built in large numbers - in total more than 1360 Mariner vehicles of different modifications. Mariners were also used in small numbers by Great Britain, Australia, Argentina, Uruguay and the Netherlands. The last Mariners were phased out of service during the 1960s, being replaced by newer aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;
