Pros and cons
<!-- Summarize and briefly evaluate the weaponry in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark pros and cons as a list. -->

Pros:

* Good AP-I round which can penetrate roof armor of low tier tanks, and does a decent amount of damage to aircraft
* All ammunition belts do a good amount of damage against aircraft for its caliber
* Good rate of fire
* Good muzzle velocity
* Can load the feared Minengeschoß shell (air targets)

Cons:

* All ammunition types have a different muzzle velocity
* Often come with a small amount of ammo
* It acts more like a heavy machine-gun rather than a cannon
* Even though AP-I shell can go through an armored target, however, overall damage is limited due to low caliber

History
Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of this weapon. The name is a rank rank German fighter Battle-rating. This fighter has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27.

A very good energy fighter for its rank, the Bf 109 F-4 can out climb most opponents due to its high power to weight ratio. However, WEP must be limited or else the engine would overheat, although manual engine control can remedy this. Despite that, it can Boom & Zoom and Rope-a-Dope well although one must watch out for severe control stiffening around 650 km/h.

Unfortunately, the F-4s 15 mm additional gondolas do not increase the damage output much at all while reducing flight performance. However, it is recommended you at least use it at least once to see how effective it is because depending on how you play it can really boost your firepower abilities. The 15 mm cannons are a trade-off for manoeuvrability, but the deadly Minengeschoß shell in the Air Targets belt will rip the wings off anything you face . For example, if you prefer to get into a dogfight, the additional weaponry will not be noticeably effective. However, if you fight in the vertical, where level speed and agility is not necessarily the most important, the additional MG 151s can mean the difference between downing a plane or nothing at all.
The PAGENAME is armed with:

* 1 x 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon, nose-mounted (200 rpg)
* 2 x 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns, nose-mounted (500 rpg = 1,000 total)

The two machine guns are mounted in the upper fuselage just in front of the pilot and fire through the propeller arc. Each are armed with the same amount of ammunition, which means that both guns will fire with each other until empty. The 20 mm cannon is mounted in the propeller shaft and fires through the propeller hub.

Suspended armament
* Without load
* 4 x 50 kg SC50JA bombs (200 kg total)
* 1 x 250 kg SC250JA bomb (250 kg total)
* 2 x 15 mm MG 151/15 cannons, wing-mounted (125 rpg = 250 total)

Usage in battles
<!-- Describe the tactics of playing in an aircraft, the features of using vehicles in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB). -->
The tropical version is much like the standard F-4 variant. New features are engine intake dust filter, a socket for sun-umbrellas and several other accommodations versus particulate matter. While these modifications allowed for prolonged service life in harsh environments like the Russian veld and Libya's desert, it also (marginally) costs top speed and engine performance due to increased air resistance and power diversion for the filtered aspirator, although these are hardly noticeable in combat.

The Bf 109 F-4 is not a great plane when you compare it to the other rank III planes, but it is effective nonetheless. Do not try to down a plane by coming behind it and giving them all you got, instead, try to scare your prey into a turn by peppering it with your 7.92 mm MG 17's, and then blow its wing off with the cannon. The cannon, unfortunately, fires relatively fast and runs out of ammo pretty quickly, so hitting a plane from the tail-end is hard to achieve.

Word to the wise: the F-4 is a fairly good turner for its class; if you are chased by an F4U, P-51, P-47D, or Typhoon, turn and destroy. The forward wing slats give the F-4 an exceptionally short turning radius. However, to survive a tangle with a Spitfire is an ordeal. The best strategy would be to scissor until the Spitfire either runs out of ammo or overshoots you, and then try to dive and outrun the Spitfire. Then, repeat. Do not try to out-climb the Spitfire (community nickname is a Spacefire for a reason), but try to outrun it in a dive. The Spitfire Mk Vc is superior to the F-4, avoid it.
Energy fighters require acceleration, they live by it. Therefore most of "flight performance" upgrades are advised: Compressor, Engine and Engine injection. Meanwhile, the upgrades for the hub-firing 20mm MG 151 should not be forgotten. Upgraded belts (air targets) ASAP!

Pros:

* Nimble compared to Russian and American counterparts
* Relatively good armament
* Relatively good climb rate, though not as good as a Spitfire or a maxed out P-39 Airacobra
* Good sustained turn
* Faster than most opponents, such as the Spitfire Mk Vc, Yak-3, and La-5, especially at altitude
* Additional armament is good for destroying medium and light tanks with armoured targets belt
* Both MG151/20 20 mm cannon and MG151/15 15 mm cannon (additional armament) can be loaded with the feared Minengeschoß (air targets belts)

Cons:

* Controls stiffen easily
* Overheats quickly
* Additional armament can reduce performance critically
* Poor cockpit visibility
* Prone to catching fire in a chase with a bomber
* Gunpods can't load stealth belts, thus giving the attacker's position away during a surprise attack

In-game description
"The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe's most widely-used fighter at the beginning of World War II.

When the advanced English Spitfire Mk.V arrived, the Messerschmitt Bf 109F Friedrich was developed in response.

The new model featured a more powerful engine and much-improved aerodynamics, but as a result, became even more difficult to control.

The Bf 109 F-4/trop variant was built for use in tropical regions. It was unique due to its air intake filter, hydraulic seals and protective covers. In addition, an umbrella was extendable over the cockpit to help keep the pilot from overheating when on the ground. The plane was equipped with a special emergency kit including a gun for self-defence and a supply of food and water.

Almost all of the Bf 109 F variants had tropical versions produced, but the Bf 109 F-4/trop was the most popular. Despite its name, the tropical variants were used not only in Africa but also on the southern steppe, where dust clouds were a significant threat to aircraft engines, as well as in the far north, where the filters protected the plane's engines from falling snow.

A total of approximately 2,200 Bf 109 F's were constructed."

Pros:

* Nimble compared to Russian and American counterparts
* Relatively good armament
* Relatively good climb rate, though not as good as a Spitfire or a maxed out P-39 Airacobra
* Good sustained turn
* Faster than most opponents, such as the Spitfire Mk Vc, Yak-3, and La-5, especially at altitude
* Additional armament is good for destroying medium and light tanks with armoured targets belt

Cons:

* Controls stiffen easily
* Overheats quickly
* Additional armament can reduce performance critically
* Poor cockpit visibility
* Prone to catching fire in a chase with a bomber
* Gunpods can't load stealth belts, thus giving the attacker's position away during a surprise attack

The name is a rank rank British fighter Battle-rating. It has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.29.

The Typhoon Mk Ia is a fast fighter for its rank but isn't good at turning due to its massively thick wings.

The Typhoon Mk Ia is a great fighter for the rank it is at. The first thing you will notice with the Typhoon Mk Ia is that it is insanely fast, so diving at a five to ten-degree angle, if you are being attacked or if your attack failed, is a solid choice if you have the altitude that is. However, if you are playing Arcade battles with this plane the diving tactic may not work since the Arcade battle maps are quite small, it is still worth trying since it is a low tier plane and because of that have a low repair cost. One other thing worth noting is that the Typhoon Mk Ia has 12 x 0.303 calibre machine guns, which is a lot of guns, but they are only rifle calibre guns so if you want to take down bombers, you should consider getting another plane with cannons. But you are a fighter after all, not a bomber hunter.

;Arcade Battle

In regards to air arcade battle, you will want to use Boom & Zoom tactics, as due to the aircraft's high power (for 2.7) and wing loading which allows for high speed passes on lower flying planes.

When encountering fighters, avoid turn-fights at all cost as this aircraft simply doesn't turn well. The best bet is to either outrun them by engaging WEP and diving, forcing them to break off pursuit or utilize engine controls to manoeuvre behind them. When appearing with bombers and other less manoeuvrable aircraft, Boom & Zoom will be the go-to tactic.

;Realistic Battle

*Tank realistic battle: "In fast, target blast, out fast." One of the unique capacities the Typhoon occupies is having the ability to carry two 500 lb bombs which provides ground strike capabilities.

It is important to learn how to use MEC (manual engine controls) as they are crucial for getting the most potential out of this aircraft, given the lack of auto propeller pitch control.

Using MEC, (which should ideally be within reach of your keyboard hand if on PC, such as the number keys above the WASD keys) hold down the button for 100% Propeller Pitch and Mixture, while using the mouse wheel to control the throttle. Use it to get a quick takeoff, and then set it to 90-93% throttle (using whichever key is assigned to engine control toggle 1) and cruise to the battlefield. It is recommended to keep an eye on the map by toggling M periodically, to indicate potential targets. By the time you are at the Area of Operations, you should have a target in mind. Fly around the far outskirts of the map, to an angle of approach that you think will be the opposite of where your target is looking. Considering you will likely be going over 250mph, wait until your target is about to be in sight, then toggle engine controls back on, hold the MECs to 100%, dump the throttle, Gear on/Flaps Landing (once below 250mph), Gear Off. doing so will effectively perform a hard braking manoeuvre, slowing you down enough to accurately place your munitions. Make sure to set the timers on the bombs to at least 3-5 seconds, as the bombs going off too early will likely destroy your aircraft with the shock wave.

Once you've dropped your bombs, flaps raised, throttle WEP and run out of there as quickly as possible before the enemy SPAA can react.

The biggest advantage to this method is you can effectively enter the airspace, and engage targets faster most other aircraft, with as little warning to enemy forces as possible excepting enemy aircraft. At the same time, because of your brutal acceleration, you can engage a target and then use your superior speed (against ground attackers like Stukas, Russian light bombers, Japanese light bombers) to annihilate enemy air forces using your 12 machine guns.

*Air realistic battle:

The biggest threat to the Typhoon is the He-100 D-1 as it can match you for top airspeed in level flight, however, the Typhoon can accelerate far better, meaning that you are not without hope.

If you find yourself in pursuit, be prepared to use the MEC and throttle to keep them in front of you. If they get behind you, lead them into a turn or a dive, using the engine controls to let them whiz past you at top speed, as you cut inside their turn thanks to your lower airspeed. Then, a quick burst of your 12 x 1,000 rpm .303 browning MGs will shred them as a cylindrical cheese grater mounted to the crankshaft of a car at the rev limit. As with most aircraft, dealing with multiple opponents at a time in the Typhoon is an undesirable. With its terrible low speed manoeuvrability you will be obliterated without an opportunity to fight back. Watch out for groups of 109s up high, Yak 1s at low altitude (or any Russian aircraft at low altitude). Against enemy fighters and bombers otherwise, the "Boom & Zoom" tactic is most applicable, as you simply don't have the turning capabilities of dogfighters at 2.7.

* Of the rank I upgrades, only Offensive 7 mm is of noticeable effect to allow for belt choice for the 7.7 mm armaments. The next level's Compressor should be the first choice, with Airframe and the HSBC mk.2 as unattractive choices. Having the option of a last-ditch ground attack with the bombs may save the occasional game though. For rank III: Engine, New 7 mm MGs and Wings repair in that order, just having the ability to perform long, accurate burst fire (against bombers) makes the armament upgrade worthwhile. The last level is Engine Injection. The remaining modules can be chosen for research by personal preference.

Pros:

* Great speed, especially in a dive
* A lot of guns
* Powerful engine
* Can carry bombs
* Average climb rate, similar climb rate to the Bf 109 E-3
* A great fighter in AB, a great fighter-bomber in RB and SB. The Typhoon is a versatile aircraft

Cons:

* Slow roll rate
* 7mm machine guns will not do much against anything with armour
* Volatile
* Poor turn fighter, especially at low speed

In-game description
The Hawker Typhoon was a single-seat, all-metal monoplane fighter, first designed as a high-speed interceptor.

Even before the new Hurricane fighter was launched into full-scale production, the engineers of Hawker Aircraft Ltd.'s design office, headed by Sir Sydney Camm, embarked on the development of а next-generation interceptor for the RAF. It was proposed that the new aircraft would be equipped with a new engine whose power would surpass that of the Rolls-Royce Merlin.

Hawker Aircraft received a contract to develop two prototypes: one had a Rolls-Royce Vulture liquid-cooled engine (an Х-block); the second had a Napier Sabre engine (an Н-block). Both engines had 24 cylinders and provided about 2,000 hp.

The first prototype was named the Hawker Tornado and featured a ventral radiator in the same position that the Hurricane did. The second prototype, named the Typhoon, was equipped with a distinctive chin-mounted radiator in the forward fuselage.

Since the development of the Rolls-Royce Vulture engine progressed more quickly, the Hawker Tornado was the first to be test flown in October 1939. The first Hawker Typhoon (P5212) prototype made its maiden flight in February 1940.

After delays caused by the Battle of Britain, the full-scale production of Typhoon Mk IA, with a 2,100 hp Napier Sabre Mk.IIA engine and a de Havilland Hydromatic three-bladed propeller, was launched. Work on the Hawker Tornado was ceased due to serious problems with the Rolls-Royce Vulture engine after the first production aircraft was built.

Subsequent to the results found during flight trials, the tail fin of the Typhoon Mk.IA was enlarged to improve longitudinal stability and the aircraft obtained its distinctive rudder with a straight rear edge. The starboard door and the folding part of the canopy were used to enter the fighter's cockpit; in an emergency both doors and the folding part of the canopy could be jettisoned.

The armament provided for the aircraft consisted of wing-mounted machine guns in the ""A"" type wing (Mk.IA) and cannons in the ""B"" type wing (Mk.IB). The first 110 fighters built were of the Typhoon Mk.IA version, with 12 wing-mounted 0.303 inch Colt-Browning Mk.II machine guns, because of the shortage of belt-feed mechanisms for the Hispano Mk.II cannons.

The early service life of the Typhoon was less than impressive. With a relatively poor rate of climb and sluggish performance at high altitudes, it was not able to maintain pace with the latest enemy fighters in its planned role as an interceptor. Furthermore, the first RAF squadrons to use the Typhoon found, like the test pilots who had helped to develop the Typhoon, that an alarming number of accidents, sometimes fatal, were attributed to the new fighter. Hawker was able to ascertain that the cause of many accidents was metal fatigue resulting in several cases of the entire tail section detaching in flight. However, even after this issue was resolved, high speed buffeting and an unreliable engine caused the early Typhoons to be less than popular with their crews.
The name is a rank rank British fighter Battle-rating. This aircraft has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.29.

The Spitfire IIb is an excellent turn-fighter and has excellent climb and speed characteristics - forming a middle ground between the sheer speed of the German fighters and American fighters and the nimble agility of the Japanese machines. These aircraft, however, have little in the way of armour protection - any hits will most likely damage something, and in addition, you will be helpless if you try to head-on something. Turn-fighting is the most efficient way of using this nimble, fast fighter, and it should be used in this way most of the time. A suggested loadout is to equip Tracers on the 7.7 mm machine guns, and Stealth Belts on the 20 mm cannons - this allows maximal amounts of damaging rounds - namely the Armour-Piercing Incendiary (AP-I), High-Explosive Fragmentation Semi-Armour-Piercing Incendiary (HEF-SAPI) and High-explosive Fragmentation Incendiary (HEF-I) Rounds. The technique to use this loadout will be described in the Usage In Battles Section.

Note, however, that with the two 20 mm cannons, the Spitfire Mk IIb can also be used as a reasonable Boom & Zoom fighter with fewer results. It is recommended to maximize the use of AP-I ammo for the Spitfire Mk IIb's 7.7 mm machine guns and the HEF-I ammo for the 20 mm cannons for air damage. It is also advisable to make sure that you conserve your ammo and only fire when you have a clear target, as you'll find you'll run out of ammo very quickly. Sixty rounds of 20 mm is not a very large ammunition pool and will run out faster than the machine guns in most cases.

The Spitfire IIb is a very good turn-fighter, being one of the more agile aircraft in the game, and has good weapons configurations that can be used against enemies. It can reliably out-turn many of the aircraft in-game, and out-zoom-climb some as well with WEP on. It has an excellent rate of climb, and due to this and the armament, is a good bomber interceptor. Using its agility, speed, and rate of climb, it can easily run rings around enemy fighters and dispense punishing blows as well. However, there are several points to be kept in mind while flying the Spitfire Mark IIb. These are:

# The relatively low amount of damage that the 7.7mm Browning machine guns put out
# The propensity of the 20mm Hispanos to jam after prolonged firing
# Lack of any armour on the engine and (relatively) small amounts of windscreen glass armour
# Proximity of vital systems towards the front of the aircraft.
# Lack of combat flaps
# Increased efficiency of control surfaces (ailerons, elevators, rudder) at medium speeds (300km/h-450km/h) and engine efficiency at low altitudes (below 4000m)
# Inability to hold WEP for long before the engine begins overheating without MEC.
# The float carburettor, should the plane pull any negative G's, the carburettor will be fuel starved cutting power to the engine.
# Similarity of the muzzle velocity of the 20 mm Hispanos and the 7.7 mm Brownings (meaning that they'll have similar trajectories- this seems unimportant, but the significance will be explained shortly.)

This fighter, unlike American and German fighters, is neither a gun platform nor a potent Boom & Zoom fighter. It will not be able to hold its top speed for very long due to its lacking cooling systems unless the radiator is forced open by manual engine control - which doubles or triples the WEP time when used properly (Forced 100% radiator directly after takeoff). In addition, the aircraft is unable to deploy combat flaps, which means you cannot have 'reserve manoeuvrability' to out-turn a fighter in order to retreat.

Try find lone opponents to face off against as the Spitfire performs best when facing enemies one at a time. Always keep an eye on the tactical map as your adversaries (mostly 109s) will travel in "wolf packs" and shoot you down. For fighting at low altitude stay above your opponent you have singled out and dive on them. If you have too much energy go for a high yo-yo manoeuvre to bleed your energy. 90% of the time you will easily out-manoeuvre anything you face so get on their tail and shoot them down. For high altitude fighting, try to get the altitude advantage and bait your opponent into a turn fight. Stay away from energy sapping manoeuvres as at high altitude this will be your death (also stay away from 1v2s, ect, as 109s will often fly together in groups).

Suggested armament load-outs are Tracers or Universal on the 7.7 mm guns and Stealth belts on the 20 mm cannons. This allows for maximal damage output. Stealth belts may be challenging for newer players, but while flying the Spitfire, there is a silver lining-

<u>The similar muzzle velocities of the two weapons.</u>

The Hispano Mk. I only has 60 rounds of ammo, stored in drums. the 7.7 mm guns have 350 rounds each. In continuous firing, assuming that no jams happen at all, the Hispano's ammo will dry up quicker than the 7.7 mm Brownings. However, jams do happen and the Hispanos will jam quicker than the Brownings.

A possible strategy is akin to that used on the Hurricane Mk IV, using the cannons sparingly. Use the cannons when in the aircraft's most effective convergence range and envelope, and use the machine guns to 'sight' the cannons. Fire the machine guns tracer belts for maximum AP-I and tracer ammo, using the similar muzzle velocities to get an idea of where the cannon rounds will go, and then fire cannons once you are getting consistent hits.

Tips for using these fighters against specific nations' fighters are as follows:

* Japanese Fighters - Japanese fighters are more nimble than you. If you enter a turn-fight with them, and the pilot is smart, he or she can and will deploy their combat flaps and shoot you down. Attempt to bait them into energy-fighting manoeuvres, where your superior speed, acceleration, and climb rate will prove you to be the victor.
* American Fighters - At this rank, you will be facing US fighters such as the F4F (the Wildcats), the P-39s (the Airacobras) and early P-47Ds (the Thunderbolts), and many other aircraft which have 0.50-calibre machine guns. These large-calibre machine guns will shred a Spitfire to pieces if given the opportunity to fire a long, sustained burst at you, such as in a head-on engagement. Lure the enemy into a turn-fight, and use your manoeuvrability to break the enemy's aiming solution at the last moment with manoeuvres such as the scissors and barrel rolls.
* German/Italian Fighters - German and Italian fighters will usually have cannons and hold a speed advantage over you, as well as being more capable at higher speeds and altitudes. If you head-on a German fighter, you will lose over 90% of the time, unless you are lucky and manage to land critical hits on the engine and the pilot - and this is also unlikely given that the 7.7mm machine guns are not known for their armour-piercing abilities. Like with American fighters, try to lure the enemy into a turn-fight, and use your manoeuvrability to break the enemy's aiming solution at the last moment with manoeuvres such as scissors and barrel rolls.
* Russian Fighters - Russian fighters will have cannons, large-calibre machine guns, or both, in conjunction with small-calibre guns. Again, facing these head-on is suicide, and at the low altitudes, you will meet them at, trying to use speed to out-zoom them is suicide. Turn-fighting may be optimal in these situations, but keep in mind that some Russian fighters are very, very manoeuvrable at low altitudes.
* French Fighters - French fighters are a bit of a mixed bag, having some of the more heavily armed aircraft and some of the less heavily armed aircraft in the game. In general, however, they will have either cannons or heavy-calibre machine guns, and manoeuvrability that is slightly better than American fighters. Turn-fighting these aircraft is preferable to a head-on engagement.

Specific enemies of note include:

* BV 238 - Don't face these things from above, level, or from the rear. The massive amounts of defence armaments on this flying boat will ensure the Spitfire will be shot down. They're also massive - but not impossible to shoot down. The only reasonable chance of shooting the BV 238 down is via aiming for the cockpit at the front. The process s to do this is to get to its rear and dive down below the enemy, corkscrewing and rolling and skidding across the sky seemingly at random and get within 600 metres (0.6 km) of it and approximately a hundred metres below. Start firing machine guns at the body, and try to get 'hit' notifications with it. Once closed into 400 metres, fire the cannons.
* A6M2 - These nimble fighters may have low-velocity cannons, but they can easily out-turn you with combat flaps and stay with you in a fight. Attempt to force them into a dive and "Compress", locking up their controls, and then pull out, turn around, and engage them as they attempt to pull out of the dive you have drawn them into.
* I-153P "Chaika" - The I-153P is a 3.0 Russian biplane from the late 1930s.These small biplanes will rip you to shreds if you don't play smart. These biplanes have an insane turn rate and will effortlessly out-turn you without any flaps. They are armed with two SHVAK 20mm cannons that obliterate everything. To counter these aircraft you DO NOT engage in a turn fight, instead you energy fight (a recommended tactic is to hammerhead stall) as your Spitfire will have much better energy retention, is much faster, and has an excellent climb rate.
Your priorities will be the weaponry upgrades and engine upgrades. It is suggested to research the gun upgrades first, and use engine upgrades to unlock tiers. New 7 mm MGs are not really needed since the brownings are relatively reliable. Airframe upgrades can take priority over the 7 mm MGs. However, to really make this bird sing, you need to have the radiator upgrade and all 20 mm cannon upgrades.
Cons:

* 7.7 mm machine guns have low damage and stopping power
* Cannons have average ammo count for this rank
* Hispano Mk.I 20 mm has a tendency to jam under continuous firing
* Due to aforementioned weapon disadvantages, proper trigger discipline, convergence, and knowing the effective cone of fire is key
* Wings overload easily at high speeds
* Low dive speed limit
* Poor roll rate, especially at high speed
* Poor high-altitude performance (compared to lower altitudes)
* Engines easily overheat
* The only position for flaps is in landing mode

The Supermarine Spitfire was a British fighter which served with various nations from the late 1930s up into the 1950s. It was a single-engine, all-metal, low-wing monoplane with the retractable landing gear. Various modifications served as fighters, interceptors, high-altitude fighters, fighter-bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. A total of some 20,300 Spitfires of all types were built during the war, including two-seater trainers.

In the summer of 1939, an early Spitfire Mk I was fitted with the new Rolls Royce Merlin XII engine, which had a higher output of 1175 HP and was fitted with a Coffman engine starter instead of the previous Merlin’s electrical starter system. This, combined with the Rotol variable pitch propeller which had been used on many Spitfire Mk Is would now form the powerplant of the new Spitfire Mk II, although some production models used the De Havilland propeller. The Mk II was some 6-7 mph faster than the later Spitfire Mk I, but still slower than the original Spitfires before a series of modifications increased the aircraft’s weight. As with the Mk I, the Spitfire Mk II was produced with either eight machine guns as the Spitfire Mk IIA, or two 20mm cannon and four machine guns as the Mk IIb. The earlier problems with cannon fitted to the Mk IB had now been solved by introducing a belt feed system to the weapon to replace the earlier drum, turning the cannon on its side and fitting a blister on the wing to house the new mechanism.

920 Spitfire Mk IIs entered service; 750 Mk IIA and 170 MK IIB, although fighters used in the air-sea rescue role were later designated Mk IIC. The Spitfire II quickly replaced the Spitfire I, with the older variant being relegated to use in Operational Training Units. By April 1941, RAF Fighter Command had completed re-equipping with the Mk II, although this too would soon be replaced by the Mk V.

Pros and cons
<!--Summarize and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - they can be substituted with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".-->

Pros:

* Absolutely amazing turn capabilities, even at low speeds
* One of the best turners
* Superior climb capabilities
* Relatively good armament with a 20 mm and 7.7 mm combination arrangement
* Very easy aircraft to control
* Good acceleration
* Short bursts can decimate the enemy, even bombers if aimed corectly

* Low dive speed limit
* Poor roll rate, especially at high speed
* Poor high-altitude performance (compared to lower altitudes)
* Engines easily overheat

The name is a rank rank British fighter Battle-rating. It was introduced in Update 1.51 "Cold Steel". A ground-attack variant of the Hurricane, the Mk IV can carry an arsenal of high-caliber cannons, rockets, or bombs.

Some players feel that this plane is overpowered in Arcade Mode with its twin 40 mm cannons. Since the planes are relatively slow in this rank it is easier to shoot them down. However, the weight of the cannons makes the plane difficult to handle, making it an awkward turn fighter, and like any other Hurricane it is not as well suited to Boom & Zoom due to its slow climb rate, made worse by the weight of the cannons. Additionally, players at this rank rarely have the skill and accuracy necessary for this plane to reach its potential. It is recommended to go for ground targets like light and medium Tanks, AAA and armoured cars. This is how you would help your team succeed in battle. However, equipping Air Target rounds and turning enemy planes into aerosol can be infinitely more fun.
Usage in battles
<!--Describe the tactics of playing in an aircraft, the features of using vehicles in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).-->

The Hurricane Mk IV fits into an interesting niche in the British tech tree. It takes the usual Hurricane air frame, removes the usual large number of machine guns (except two), adds armour plates around the engine and cockpit. Then there is the armament. Two 40 mm guns on the wings, which can equip either high explosive or armour piercing rounds. You also have the choice to swap these guns for rockets or bombs depending on your targets/play style. This makes the Hurricane most suitable for two roles. These are:

Ground Attack: Being a little more agile than the usual attacker, but still very well armed, the Hurricane Mk IV makes a good ground attack aircraft. The 40 mm cannons can penetrate most vehicles from a steep angle or from the side with armour piercing ammunition. However, they cause very little post penetration damage and are inaccurate. Against light vehicles they can be very effective, but heavily armoured vehicles like KV1s and even T34s can usually shrug off the 40 mm rounds. Beware that the cannons are very hard to score hits when aiming for smaller targets, unless you zero the guns to a short distance. The guns also have a very large recoil which makes them furthermore inaccurate. The RP-3 rockets are another good option. A direct hit with one of these rockets to the side/rear/top of an enemy tank will cause serious damage. They cause good explosive damage and can penetrate around 60 mm of armour, but are quite inaccurate and hard to aim for inexperienced players. You also have access to 250 lb and 500 lb bombs, which are ideal for taking out singular high value targets.

Bomber Hunting: The two 40 mm cannons can be deadly against any aircraft they hit. Bombers particularly fit into the category. They are generally big, slow targets that are easy to hit with the otherwise inaccurate and difficult to aim 40 mms. Usually it only takes one or two hits and BOOM! The HE rounds in the air targets belt work particularly well, but for certain targets, the AP rounds are more suitable. Heavily armoured aircraft like the B-25 or the IL-2 can sometimes shrug off the HE rounds, due to their low penetration values, but the AP round can be deadly. For particularly large targets like the BV 238, you can even use rockets, which are sure to cause massive damage.

Despite its heavy handling and only two 7.7 mm machine guns, some more experienced players use the Hurricane as a fighter. If you can get the 40 mm's on target, they are deadly. The two 7.7 mms can come in reasonably handy too if you're accurate with them, but they are not suitable for prolonged combat. There are a few ways to use the Hurricane in this way:

Boom & Zoom is the main tactic to use for this Hurricane. The turn rate of this aircraft cannot compete with most other nations, and it has very poor energy retention. The best thing to do in this aircraft is to climb at the start of the round and go bomber hunting, as it is extremely efficient at shooting down the slow, less manoeuvrable targets it will be pitted against at its battle rating. Take your time when taking a shot, tank calibre guns are not meant to be wing mounted and are very inaccurate as a result, so if a shot doesn't look good to you, do not fire. Boom and zoom is the tactic that should always be employed with this aircraft. Climb, find your target, dive, fire, then using the speed gained in the dive, climb away. Rinse and repeat. Under no circumstances should you attempt to turn fight with this aircraft. Almost any other plane will be able to out turn you. If you do find yourself with an aircraft on your 6, dive and gun the throttle. You should be able to out dive most aircraft. In a ground attack role, this aircraft can be used in much higher battle ratings, where the rockets/ 40 mm's remain effective, even against heavy tanks.

If using the Hurricane Mk IV in higher rank matches, beware of enemy fighters. Almost anything will be able to catch you and easily destroy you. To avoid being obliterated by enemy aircraft, try to spawn only when you have air support or good SPAA coverage. Your twin 7.7 mm will not be enough to deter enemy fighters, but if you are a good shot, the twin 40 mm (with air targets belt) can take out even the most heavily armoured fighters.
Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".-->

Pros:

* Exceptional stopping power, capable of downing bombers with only one shot from the 40 mm cannon
* Good dive rate
* Decent max speed
* The first aircraft in the British tree to carry the deadly Air Targets belt
* Machine guns help aiming the cannons
* Rockets allow for quicker destruction of targets compared to the 40 mm, but you get less ammunition and they inaccurate
* Excellent ground attack capability in realistic and simulator battles
* The cannons are great for causing fires on ground targets
* The rockets utilized, though inaccurate, can destroy heavy tanks
* Well armoured compared to other Hurricanes, making it more suited to a ground attack role. Can shrug off small caliber rounds relatively easily
* Small compared to other ground attack aircraft
* Good at hunting low flying bombers with the 40 mm
* Rockets or 40 mm can be used on big targets like the BV-238

Cons:

* Extremely poor climb rate
* 40 mm cannons are wing mounted and are somewhat inaccurate and shells will often splice targets at long range
* Poor turn rate
* Only 15 rounds per 40 mm gun and only two 7.7 mm Browning's as backup
* Terrible energy retention
* Default ammo belts are mixed with AP shells, making it so that shots can cripple rather than destroy
* Requires an exceptionally good aim in order to be effective due to the 40 mm cannons slow rate of fire
* Significant recoil from the 40 mm cannons will make follow up shots difficult
* Continuous fire with the 40 mm cannons will cause them to fire asynchronously, resulting in extremely poor accuracy due to recoil
* 40 mm AP rounds cause mainly punctual damage, destroying enemies can be difficult
* Using WEP at the start of takeoff can cause a nose-over

But beware that the cannons are very hard to aim when aiming for smaller targets, unless you zero the guns to a short distance.

* Rockets or 40 mm can be used on big targets like the BV-238

Cons:

* Extremely poor climb rate
* 40 mm cannons are wing mounted and are somewhat inaccurate and shells will often splice targets at long range
* Poor turn rate
* Only 15 rounds per 40 mm gun and only two 7.7 mm Browning's as backup
* Terrible energy retention
