<!--''Summarize and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - they have a substitution in the form of softer "inadequate", "effective".''-->
'''Pros:'''

* Same gun and general ammo choices as the [[Leopard A1A1]]
* M735 APFSDS comes stock and is free
* A little bit more agile than the Leopard 1
* .50 cal machine gun proves useful against SPAAGs, as well as strafing aircraft.
* Better frontal armour overall than the Leopard, [[ZSU-57-2]] will have a much harder time killing you from the front, can also bounce some APDS.
* Hydropneumatic suspension system can give up to -12° of gun depression as well as more compatibility for terrain
* Gets improved Type 93 APFSDS, which can deal frontally with anything the tank will see from any range.

'''Cons:'''

* [[hydropneumatic suspension|Hydropneumatic suspension system]] takes time to deploy and undeploy.
* Only -5° of gun depression without deploying the suspension.
* 53 kph maximum compared to Leopard 1's 65 kmph (however both tanks rarely reach this speed).

A year after the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) issued out their first post-war main battle tank, the [[Type 61]], development started on its successor, recognizing that the Type 61 was already becoming obsolete in terms of the new Soviet tanks being produced such as the [[T-62]]. Working alongside Mitsubishi once more, they looked for a new tank design incorporating many new features introduced in tank technology. This resulted in the tank having the hydropneumatic suspension system from the U.S.-German project MBT-70, a hull shape similar to Germany's [[Leopard I|Leopard 1]], and the powerful [[L7A1 (105 mm)|105 mm L7 gun]] for its main armament. Other planned features for the tank was a rotatable commander's cupola and an autoloader system for the main gun.

The first prototype arrived for testing in 1968 as the ''[[STB-1]]''. Modifications to the design started in 1969, which saw the autoloader removed for being too complex and expensive, as well as the removal of a proposed remote-controlled anti-aircraft machine gun for the same reason. The turret design was also elongated for various design purposes. The modified prototype was labeled ''STB-3'' and was delivered in 1971. The final prototype, ''STB-6'', was then delivered in 1973. The tank was then accepted for service in 1974 as the '''Type 74''' tank. Production would start in September 1975 all the way to 1989, producing 893 tanks.

===Service===
Due to the defensive nature of the JSDF and the absence of any hostility rising out of the Cold War, the Type 74 spent its service life in the JGSDF with no battle service. During its service life however, it was upgraded with new hardware such as infra-red imagers for night fighting and a laser rangefinder for the commander. Despite all that, the Type 74 was generally outdated in terms of specifications even before entering service, as second-generation main battle tanks like the [[Chieftain Mk 3|Chieftain]] and [[T-72A|T-72]] outclass it and development for third-generation main battle tanks like the Leopard 2 and [[M1 Abrams]] were already underway.

The tank was to be replaced by the newer [[Type 90]] main battle tank, but the collapse of the Soviet Union and the official end of the Cold War caused the replacement program to be halted. Today, the Type 74 still sees limited service in Japan and it was reported that 700 units were still in use in 2006.

== Usage in battles ==
<!-- Describe the tactics of playing in an aircraft, the features of using vehicles in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB). -->
The P-51H-5NA is a high altitude turnfighter. It has impressive performance against most props it may face and it can put a considerable fight against earlier jets. Compared to its German and British counterparts, it outperforms them by a fair amount in engine performance. The P-51H-5NA can also be used as a strike fighter, as it can have great loadouts of combinations of bombs and rockets for this purpose.

Whilst having great engine performance, The P-51H-5NA can turn impressively as well, outmaneuvering most of its German counterparts. It has good ordnance, capable of shooting any aircraft down with relative ease, as well as being able to dodge incoming attacks by jets. It has a good climbrate which also gives it an option to put up a fight against jet encounters, being able to perform boom and zoom attacks as its energy retention is good. It has a tendency to break its wings while zoom climbing at speeds higher than 550km/h. It also uses high octane fuel, which means it has considerable susceptibility to fire.

At low altitude, fighting with a turnfighter mindset will mostly work. If jets are present, try not to drop your speeds too much, as you may need to dodge multiple shots. The P-51H-5NA will not perform as good against jets, as it does not have comparable speeds. BnZ attacks are the most effective against jets, as this manouever mostly removes the speed out of the equation.

Most enemies faced by the P-51H-5NA will be easily taken down, but unfortunately it also faces jets from time to time. Me 262 and Ho 229 are the biggest predators of this plane. The Ho 229 will outturn you while the Me 262 will outrun you.

'''Pros:'''

* Great top speed for a prop-driven aircraft
* Respectable armament of 6 x 12.7mm (.50 caliber) machine guns
* One of the most maneuverable P-51s in the game
* Good climb rate
* Good payload options

'''Cons:'''

* .50 caliber machine guns aren't nearly as powerful compared to cannons, but will still do the job
* High crew training and purchase cost - the same as the F-80A-5 Shooting Star
* Can be up-tiered to fight against early jets
* Limited WEP, once it runs out the planes performance drops dramatically
== Usage in battles ==

* Respectable armament of 6 x 12.7mm (.50 caliber) machine guns
* One of the most maneuverable P-51s in the game
* Good climb rate
* Good payload options

'''Cons:'''

* .50 caliber machine guns aren't nearly as powerful compared to cannons, but will still do the job
* High crew training and purchase cost - the same as the F-80A-5 Shooting Star
* Can be up-tiered to fight against early jets
* Limited WEP, Once it runs out, the planes performance drops dramatically
{{break}}
The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a rank {{Specs|rank}} Russian fighter {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.35]].

The Yak-3P is a fantastic all-around fighter. It has the manoeuvrability of an A6M, the armament of an Fw 190, the speed of a P-63, all combined into one fantastic combo.

The armament is fantastic- three 20 mm Cannons mounted in the nose can rip apart pretty much every plane you will face on the 4.3 BR. However, they do not pack the punch of Hispanos or AN/M2 cannons, or the belts, for that matter. Thus, it is recommended you research the belts as quickly as possible because the Ground Targets ammunition will increase performance markedly. One great advantage of the B-20M/S Cannons is that they take much longer to jam than their American/British cannon counterparts. Watch your ammo count, its best to attack at an angle with short bursts due to hit detection problems (sparkling) when firing from a ~0-degree angle.

Unlike the Yak-9s and 7s, the 3P is a fully composite plane. This means the wings have higher durability than the wooden-supported Yak-9, but it is still recommended you do not push the plane's manoeuvres to the limits, as the wings will still break in a high-speed dive or manoeuvres. The engine will also overheat extremely quickly. The durability of the plane is not great. Try not to be shot at all, because even a Spitfire with 8 7.7mms can set you aflame.

Like most Yaks, the 3P has good manoeuvrability, and you can out-turn pretty much everything except for the A6M, some of the Bfs, and Spitfires. Fortunately, the 3P also has another ace-in-the-hole. In arcade, WEP provides a very good rate of acceleration, so running away from a battle poses no challenges. However, the climb-rate is also pretty good, but not as great as the Spitfire or Fw 190. Thus, the Yak-3P is one of the best "dive-into-battle" and destroy planes. Performance is terrible above 3 km. Below that altitude performance is fantastic.

In Arcade mode, this is one of the best planes available. The wings are not affected by high speeds, so you can push the 3P to the limits. However, in RB or SB, watch your speed if you use Boom & Zoom. Any speed higher than around 410 mph will cause the control surfaces to lock up and any attempt to make a hard turn at this point will break your wings. The 3P also has really bad high altitude performance, so you are limited to around 2000 km before your speed and performance drastically decrease.

To conclude, the Yak-3P is one of those planes that have great armament and all-round specs.
The armament is very good. With a relatively fast fire rate and a good punch, they are more than powerful enough to destroy any plane with ease in the Rank 3 level. Bombers may pose a bit of a challenge. However, just aim for the wings and fire. The fuselage will just absorb your shells. Your best shots are side-on or diving in from an angle because the armament is most effective then. The Ground Targets belt is most effective with 3 HE shells/1 API shell per cycle.

The idea to produce a new fighter for the Red Army Air Force went as far back as 1941. It was then that the Yakovlev Design Bureau presented the I-30 prototype, intended an alternative to the earlier Yak-1 design. However, the German invasion of the USSR, as well as aluminium shortages, meant that the project had to be put on hold. Yakovlev resumed the development in 1943 while working on an upgraded version of the Yak-1 fighter. This time, it was decided that a new aircraft should be produced to completely replace the Yak-1 and Yak-7 models.

By September 1943, yet another improved variant was ready, designated Yak-1M Dubler, on which the canvas skin on the tail section was replaced with 2mm plywood, and oil and water radiators were improved. The Dubler also had a new mastless antenna, a ring sight instead of a reflector sight, improved armour and a new propeller. Test pilots were impressed by the new prototype. Their report stated in part: "''Yak-1M possessed excellent horizontal, and especially vertical, manoeuvrability. Top speed greatly improved compared to earlier serial-production Yaks. Despite the improved performance, the aircraft remains easy to fly and does not require extensive pilot training''."

The new machine was dubbed as the Yak-3 and entered service with the Red Army Air Force in 1944. The Yak-3 was a further modification of the Yak-1, produced in 1944 and 1945, with a total of 4,848 built, and considered one of the best fighters of the war.

The new fighter quickly became very popular with Soviet pilots. They highly praised its solid armament of two Berezin UBS 12.7 mm machine guns and one ShVAK 20 mm cannon as well as ease of piloting and superb low-altitude performance. Marcel Albert, the top scoring French ace of World War II, cited the Yak-3 as one of the best fighters of the war, along with the P-51 Mustang and the Supermarine Spitfire. After the war, the Yak-3 was also used by the Air Forces of Socialist Yugoslavia and Poland.<ref name="forum">[https://warthunder.com/en/news/2693--en <nowiki>[Aircraft Profile] Yak-3</nowiki>]</ref>

The Yak-3P was produced from April 1945 until mid-1946, armed with 3 × 20 mm Berezin B-20 cannon with 120 rounds for the middle cannon and 130 RPG for the side weapons. The three-cannon armament with full ammunition load was actually 11 kg (24 lb) lighter than that of a standard Yak-3, and the one-second burst mass of 3.52 kg (7.74 lb) was greater than that of most contemporary fighters. Starting in August 1945, all Yak-3 were produced in the Yak-3P configuration with a total of 596 built.

One of the most memorable air battles for the Yak-3 took place on 16th July 1944, when the plane showed it could confidently engage superior enemy forces. On that day, 10 Yak-3s met 8 Bf-109s and 4 FW-190s, with the battle eventually growing to 18 Soviet and 24 German planes. In the end, 15 German planes were shot down, for the loss of a single Yak-3.

Starting in August 1945, all Yak-3 were produced in the Yak-3P configuration with a total of 596 built.
== Description ==
<!-- ''Write an introduction to the article in 2-3 small paragraphs. Briefly tell us about the history of the development and combat using the weaponry and also about its features. Compile a list of air, ground, or naval vehicles that feature this weapon system in the game.'' -->
The Army-Navy Model 3, or AN/M3 for short, was a 20mm aircraft-mounted autocannon used by both the US Army Air Forces (later the USAF) and US Navy. The cannon was based off of the British [[Hispano Mk.V (20 mm)|Hispano Mk.V]], itself a modification of the Swiss Hispano-Suiza [[Hispano 404 (20 mm)|H.S.404]]. Compared to its earlier cousin, the [[AN/M2 (20 mm)|AN/M2]], the AN/M3 had a faster rate of fire and used lubricated, percussion-primed ammunition that was less prone to jamming, which was a major problem on the [[Hispano Mk.II (20 mm)|Hispano Mk.II]]. Lubrication was provided by a pump that dropped semi-fluid lubricating oil (LSA) onto the rounds before firing. The gun had a gas-assisted blowback operation, with recoil being used to load the next round.

The US Navy extensively used the AN/M3 on fighters starting in late WW2 and until the 1950s, when they were replaced by more modern cannons and air-to-air missiles. The cannon was mounted, usually 2 to a wing, on planes such as the [[F4U-4B]] and later versions of the Corsair, the Grumman [[F8F-1B]] Bearcat, and the [[F9F-5|F9F Panther]] jet fighter.
''Tell us about the tactical and technical characteristics of the cannon or machine gun.''

=== Available shells ===
''Describe the shells that are available for the cannon and their features and purpose. If it concerns autocannons or machine guns, write about different ammo belts and what is inside (which types of shells).''

=== Comparison with analogues ===
<!-- ''Give a comparative description of cannons/machine guns, that have firepower equal to these type of weapons.'' -->

* [[MG 151/20 (20 mm)|MG 151/20]] - Powerful Minengeschoss shells are superior to AN/M3 ammunition. However, the AN/M3 has faster fire rate and about 30 m/s faster shell velocity, making ranged shots easier. The AN/M3 also has more hitting power and is more consistent than its German cousin.
* [[Hispano Mk.V (20 mm)|Hispano Mk.V]]- As the AN/M3 is an American copy of the Hispano Mk V, these two weapons are almost completely identical.Historically, the AN/M3 was more prone to jamming than its British counterpart.
* [[AN/M2 (20 mm)|AN/M2]]- Superior in every way. The AN/M3 is more reliable and has higher fire rate compared to its older brother.

== Usage in battles ==
<!-- ''Describe the cannon/machine gun in the game - its distinctive features, tactics of usage against the main opponents. Please don't write a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought.'' -->
The high fire rate of this cannon makes it a great choice for engaging almost any enemy fighter or bomber. The only limitation is the pilot's skill and the speed and maneuverability of the plane it is mounted on. The HEF-SAPI (High Explosive Fragmentation - Semi Armor Piercing Incendiary) round can easily rip wings into shreds or set fuel tanks on fire. However, it is important to fire in short bursts, as the high fire rate will drain your ammunition. Though not as prone to jamming as the [[AN/M2 (20 mm)|AN/M2]] before it, the AN/M3 can still jam easily if the New 20mm Cannons modification is not yet unlocked.

=== Pros and cons ===
<!-- ''Summarize and briefly evaluate the weaponry in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark pros and cons as a list.'' -->
'''Pros:'''

* HEF-SAPI ammo is great for tearing up wings and other modules
* High fire rate
* Often 4 cannons are present on the aircraft, providing massive amounts of firepower
* Stealth rounds have lots of HEI, HEF, and HEF-SAPI ammo, with the lack of tracers makes it hard for enemies to evade shots
* Often very generous amount of ammunition, as common on US aircraft

'''Cons:'''

* ''Air Targets'' belt has no tracers (Air RB), making aiming hard
* Prone to jamming, especially when stock
* Tendency to "spark" and deal minimal damage, especially when hitting fuselages
* ''Default'' belts are far inferior to the ''Air Targets'' and ''Stealth'' belts
* Horrific stock accuracy
== Description ==
<!--In the description, the first part should be about the history of and the creation and combat usage of the aircraft, as well as its key features. In the second part, tell the reader about the aircraft in the game. Insert a screenshot of the vehicle, so that if the novice player does not remember the vehicle by name, he will immediately understand what kind of vehicle the article is talking about.-->
{{break}}
The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a rank {{Specs|rank}} Russian fighter {{Battle-rating}}. This aircraft has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27.

By the time you get this plane, you should be well versed in the rules of Yakovlev warfare: Engine throttle at about 90%, stay below 2,000 m and watch your ammo. However, the Yak-3 is a true gift to Soviet pilots: while peak performance is still at or below 2,000 m, going above up to 4,000 m is now possible! Energy fighting, while not the Yak's speciality, can also be done effectively with the Yak-3, and moderate BnZ can be allowed due to metal wing construction (wings take more to rip now). While engine throttle should still be at 90% for max engine cooling, once upgraded, you should never have to throttle lower than this on this plane. In addition, WEP is moderately effective now and does not overheat the engine as fast as previous Yaks!

The guns on this plane are worth noting as well. Along with the effective and feared 20 mm cannon in the nose, the Yak-3 gains two additional 12.7 mm MGs. This means that the cannon is no longer your only real weapon. Dual .50s can wreak impressive havoc at close range, and compliment the cannon well. The cannon also gets an improved belt: Air Targets. While not having as much HE as the Ground Targets belt (some pilots will, justifiably, prefer the GT belt), it contains more incendiary rounds. The Stealth belt is still a solid choice for those who are used to the trajectory of the cannon. Find the belt that suits you.

The Yak-3 sports 2 x Berezin UB 12.7 mm MGs, which are arguably the best 12.7 mm weapons in the game besides the M3 Browning. These run dry at approximately the same time as the 20 mm ShVAK cannon. The ShVAK sports inferior ballistics to those of the [[MG 151/20 (20 mm)|MG 151]] and especially [[Hispano Mk.II (20 mm)|Hispano]] cannons, closing to short range before firing is recommended. Being hub mounted, the ShVAK can utilize its hefty firing rate advantage that it holds overall 20 mm cannons in the game (with the exception of the [[F-86F-2]]'s T-160s).

The Yak-3 carries 150 RPG for the Berezin UBs and 120 rounds for the ShVAK, which is a below average load. It is imperative that you fire short bursts and save your ammo until within 400 meters for maximum effectiveness and longevity. This weapon set is more than adequate for fighter vs. fighter engagements, but you will notice how lacking the weapons are vs. dual and quad engine aircraft.

The lightened airframe of the Yak-3, being propelled by the more powerful Klimov VK-105 engine, gives the aircraft very good acceleration properties and a good rate of climb. It is also very agile, especially at low altitudes. However, while the Yak-3 is one of the best low-altitude dogfighters, its high-altitude performance still leaves much to be desired. The aircraft should always be kept below 4 km altitude to maximize its strengths. The Yak can also be used as a Boom & Zoom aircraft, however, due to low wing endurance, it is advised to always control the speed of the dive and not use excessive force to pull out of it.
== Usage in battles ==
<!--Describe the tactics of playing in an aircraft, the features of using vehicles in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).-->
[[File:Cockpits Yak-3.jpg|thumbnail|right|The Yak-3's instrument panel.]]
The Yak-3 is the pinnacle of the piston engine Yakovlev design, with a much more powerful engine, the addition of a second MG (meaning the MGs are viable now!), and ''metal wings''! The coolant system, now actually somewhat effective, has been moved to the wing roots (no "smiley face" below the nose), making the plane more streamlined. The cannon - the same old 20 mm ShVAK - receives a pleasant upgrade: an effective Air Targets belt.

Overall, the Yak-3 can be considered as a "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none" aircraft. It will readily fulfil any fighter role a pilot will put it in, however, it won't excel in any – the American and German aircraft will still be better at energy fighting and executing Boom & Zoom tactics, while the British and the Japanese planes will still have an edge in manoeuvrability. Yet, the Yak-3 is a very potent machine which, with a skilled pilot behind the controls, is an opponent that you don't want to underestimate.

Baiting higher enemies into lower altitudes and engaging them in a dogfight is a worthwhile tactic. The only exception to this is Japanese opponents and certain Spitfire variants, where strict ''energy fighting'' or ''Boom & Zoom'' is recommended.

The Yak series also works oddly well at medium altitude "Boom & Zoom", thanks to a clean low drag airframe (good horizontal energy retention) and good vertical manoeuvrability.

=== Pros and cons ===
<!--Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".-->

'''Pros:'''

* Very manoeuvrable
* Excellent roll rate
* High acceleration and top speed, especially at low altitudes
* Excellent energy retention
* Dual Berezin UB HMG's with upgraded belts are capable of doing good damage

'''Cons:'''

* Still confers to the standard Yak setup of 1 x 20 mm ShVAK with one/two MGs, which is underwhelming at this rank
* Poor high altitude performance
* Upgraded Yak-3s can ''still'' have engine overheating problems!
* Very low wing rip speed
* Suffers extreme compression above 600kph, combined with the low wing rip speed diving from high altitude is a death sentence

The new machine was dubbed as the Yak-3 and entered service with the Red Army Air Force in 1944.

== Usage in battles ==

* Respectable armament of 6 x 12.7mm (.50 caliber) machine guns
* One of the most maneuverable P-51s in the game
* Good climb rate
* Good payload options

'''Cons:'''

* .50 caliber machine guns aren't nearly as powerful compared to cannons, but will still do the job
* High crew training and purchase cost - the same as the F-80A-5 Shooting Star
* Can be up-tiered to fight against early jets
* Once WEP runs out, the planes performance drops dramatically and can't hold its own at all
