== Description ==
<!-- ''In the description, the first part should be about the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle, as well as its key features. In the second part, tell the reader about the ground vehicle in the game. Insert a screenshot of the vehicle, so that if the novice player does not remember the vehicle by name, he will immediately understand what kind of vehicle the article is talking about.'' -->
The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a rank {{Specs|rank}} British self-propelled anti-aircraft gun {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.79 "Project X"]].

This tank makes for a good entry-level anti-aircraft vehicle; good speed, manoeuvrability and a devastating short to medium range AA weapon. This vehicle should be used in the rear echelon of an assault, watching the skies for incoming bogies. However, the real ace is that the guns trade accuracy for sheer volume of fire, filling the skies with a hailstorm of bullets that can discourage bandits from lining up on an attack run. However, anything beyond effective range won't be struck down effectively.

== General info ==
=== Survivability and armour ===
{{Specs-Tank-Armour}}
<!-- ''Describe armour protection. Note the most well protected and key weak areas. Appreciate the layout of modules as well as the number and location of crew members. Is the level of armour protection sufficient, is the placement of modules helpful for survival in combat? If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.'' -->

* Cast homogeneous armour (Turret)
* Rolled homogeneous armour (Hull)

{| class="wikitable"
|-
!Armour!!Front (Slope angle)!!Sides!!Rear!!Roof
|-
|Hull || 14 mm ''Front plate'' <br> 14 mm (0-73°) ''Upper glacis'' <br> 14 mm (22-69°) ''Lower glacis'' || 14 mm || 14 mm (0-52°) ''Upper''<br> 4 mm (53-75°) ''Lower'' || 4 mm
|-
|Turret || 14 mm (0-64°) ''Turret front'' || 14 mm || 14 mm || N/A
|}

The {{PAGENAME}} has very little armour. Most of the hull has 14 mm of armour, which is sufficient only against rifle-calibre rounds. However, the gunner is exposed to machine gun fire, and being that there are only 2 crew members, if he dies, the entire vehicle is destroyed. This means even enemy machine guns can kill you if they hit your gunner. You may be able to somewhat protect the gunner by aiming upwards with the machine guns, but this is not reliable. In any case, the {{PAGENAME}} is vulnerable to any vehicle in the game.

=== Mobility ===
{{Specs-Tank-Mobility}}
<!-- ''Write about the mobility of the ground vehicle. Estimate the specific power and manoeuvrability, as well as the maximum speed forwards and backwards.'' -->

{{tankMobility|abMinHp=125|rbMinHp=78}}

The {{PAGENAME}} is decently quick and manoeuvrable, and its small size allows it to fit into areas many other vehicles cannot. It can easily get around the map, and can quickly take cover from aircraft or other tanks when necessary. However, it is too light to drive through many obstacles easily, such as walls and small trees, and its suspension is too bouncy to allow it to fire with much accuracy while moving.

{{Specs-Tank-Weapon|1}}
<!-- ''Give the reader information about the characteristics of the main gun. Assess its effectiveness in a battle based on the reloading speed, ballistics and the power of shells. Do not forget about the flexibility of the fire, that is how quickly the cannon can be aimed at the target, open fire on it and aim at another enemy. Add a link to the main article on the gun: <code><nowiki>{{main|Name of the weapon}}</nowiki></code>.
The four BESA machine guns the {{PAGENAME}} is armed with can be devastating to open-topped vehicles thanks to their high rate of fire, but they are completely ineffective against anything with armour. They are also less effective and less accurate over distance against planes than the cannons or heavy machine guns most other anti-aircraft vehicles are armed with, although a well-placed burst will still tear apart the biplanes you are likely to face. Each belt is large enough to enable sustained fire, allowing you to compensate for your poor accuracy through sheer volume of bullets.

==== Ammunition ====

* '''Default:''' {{Annotation|Ball|Omni-purpose}}{{-}}{{Annotation|T|Tracer}}{{-}}{{Annotation|IT|Incendiary tracer}} - The worst option, due to the highest quantity of poorly damaging ball and tracer rounds.
* '''Universal:''' {{Annotation|AP|Armour-piercing}}{{-}}{{Annotation|T|Tracer}}{{-}}{{Annotation|IT|Incendiary tracer}}{{-}}{{Annotation|Ball|Omni-purpose}} - Better than default, but still has regular tracers and ball rounds which hurt damage output.
* '''API-T:''' {{Annotation|IT|Incendiary tracer}}{{-}}{{Annotation|IT|Incendiary tracer}}{{-}}{{Annotation|AP|Armour-piercing}}{{-}}{{Annotation|T|Tracer}} - Contains a lot of incendiary tracer rounds, which have a higher chance of starting fires in aircraft. Once a fire is started, it is likely to destroy the plane, making this belt very effective.
* '''AP-T:''' {{Annotation|AP|Armour-piercing}}{{-}}{{Annotation|AP|Armour-piercing}}{{-}}{{Annotation|IT|Incendiary tracer}}{{-}}{{Annotation|T|Tracer}} - AP rounds are still ineffective against armour, despite the name, but deal more damage to aircraft components. With good aim, this belt can tear wings off and destroy engines.
* Racks 1, 2 & 3 will disappear only if you have 4 belts left.
* If you pack 16, 12 or 8 belts the 4 racks will be displayed as full.
* Racks will successively disappear if you pack 16 belts and shoot them until depletion.
* Pack the maximum amount of ammo to go into battle as you are a SPAA.
== Usage in battles ==
<!-- ''Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).'' -->
The {{PAGENAME}} is a very vulnerable vehicle, so commanders should be careful not to expose themselves to enemy fire. Take care to find a position where you will not be seen by enemy ground vehicles, and watch the sky. Due to the low velocity of the machine guns, the {{PAGENAME}} should not open fire until the enemy plane is very close, probably within 1 km. If you begin to fire while the enemy plane is out of range, they will likely change course and stay away from your position. Also be wary if there is more than one enemy plane up, as you can easily be strafed to death by machine gun fire. Once you have a good shot on the enemy plane, the 4 machine guns are capable of dealing more damage than one might expect. You can down most aircraft quite quickly, although twin-engine fighters and bombers will take longer to destroy.

=== Pros and cons ===
<!-- ''Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".'' -->

'''Pros:'''

* 4 BESA machine guns have a high ammo load and a good rate of fire
* 4 machine guns means that you have a high hit probability
* Can be used against low tier SPAA and open-top tank destroyers, however, it is best suited to strictly SPAA duties
* Small and mobile

'''Cons:'''

* Cannot defend itself from ground attacks, as none of its belts can penetrate tanks
* Damage output is nowhere near comparable to SPAA armed with 20 mm autocannons at this tier
* The gunner is exposed to machinegun fire from above and the front
* The armour will not protect you from 12.7 mm rounds and above
* Vulnerable to artillery

The machine-gun armed Mark VI light tank formed the bulk of British tank strength in 1939. They were intended for colonial duties and reconnaissance but would see front-line combat as late as the British defeats in Java in early 1942. In 1940 they were in use in the light tank squadrons of armoured regiments and the main body of the divisional cavalry regiments. They carried a .50 calibre or 15 mm machine gun as the main armament. They were also used in the early war as command vehicles for armoured units.

As they were withdrawn from service, some Mark VI's were converted to anti-aircraft vehicles, raising the superstructure and replacing the turret. In practice the commander also being the gunner was ineffective. British armoured regiments and tank battalions were supposed to have 4-8 of these vehicles each in mid-1942. By mid-1943 they were taken out of service, replaced for this purpose by the significantly more versatile 20 mm-armed Crusader AA Mk II tank.
The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a rank {{Specs|rank}} British Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft (SPAA) Gun {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.55 "Royal Armour"]] along with the initial British ground tree. A very mobile self-propelled anti-tank gun with a dual-mounted .50 cal machine gun, it also has armour rivaling some of the Rank I vehicle and can withstand a majority of the small shells, warranting its high battle rating.

The T17E2 has two obvious characteristics. It has wheels, giving it excellent speed and mobility, especially on hard surfaces like rock or roads. The wheels also mean that it struggles in mud, sand or snow. Then, there are the guns, the T17E2 is armed with a seemingly light armament of two 12.7 mm (.50 cal) machine guns. Compared to other SPAA of the rank, the armament are light. German and Japanese SPAA are armed with highly potent 20mm auto cannons, which inflict far more damage to aircraft and vehicles alike. Instead, the T17E2 relies on its longevity and high rate of fire.
{{main|M2HB (12.7 mm)}}

With two 12.7 mm machine guns, the T17E2 shares the same anti-aircraft armament as the early USA's SPAAs (M13 MGMC and M16 MGMC). While the 12.7 mm is not strong enough to down planes with a single hit, the rapid-fire will ensure a screen of rounds will hit the target at the same time. With tracers, one can use the turret's fast traverse rate to "trace" the rounds towards the target and stay on them to cause enough damage to destroy planes.
== Usage in battles ==
The T17E2 main role is anti aircraft. It is recommended to use tracer belts in order to be accurate yet deadly when engaging an enemy plane. It should be noted the T17E2 lacks capabilities to destroy enemy armour as most of them will be able to withstand your 12.7mm machine guns. Do not engage with enemy armour unless they are lightly armoured (with armour less than 20 mm of thickness) or open vehicles (other anti aircraft, russian SPGs, etc). Due to being a wheeled vehicle, the T17E2 has enough speed to capture enemy points and retreat. Use this tactic when there are no air engagements, go capture enemy points and avoid enemy contact unless you are in immediate danger or see an open vehicle, use your speed and low profile to your advantage. Bushes (both map prop and tank decoration) are your friends in combat as they will camouflage you and reduce your tank silhouette. Be aware of your turret as, since it is open top, enemy planes will be able to kill your gunner in a strafe. Be aware that enemy tanks machine guns will be able to fire between the turret shield and kill your gunner (where the optics are at).

=== Pros and cons ===

'''Pros:'''

* Twin .50 calibre machine guns are good against both aircraft and lightly-armoured ground targets
* High rate of fire
* Good mobility
* Fast turret rotation, good for hitting fast moving targets
* Fast on roads
* More efficient than tracked vehicles when turning, due to it having all wheel drive
* Very effective against aircraft

'''Cons:'''

* Wheeled vehicles are slower than tracked vehicles in the water
* Cannot pivot turn like a tank, drives like a truck
* Has difficulty against heavily-armoured tanks
* Armour is only effective protecting against low calibre machine gun rounds

===Development===
The '''T17E2''' started as an armoured car requested by US Army Ordnance in July 1941. The request asked for a medium armoured car for combat services. Two companies, Ford Motor Company and Chevrolet, submitted designs to this request, Ford's was an all driven 6x6 wheeled vehicle and Chevrolet's was an all driven 4x4 wheeled vehicle. These two were called ''T17'' and ''T17E1'' respectively, both were powered by two Hercules JXD engines in order to standardize on parts. These two vehicles were to use a turret developed by Rock Island Arsenal with a 37 mm cannon and machine guns, this would house a crew of five. Despite their development, the United States interest on the design waned and were never adopted fully by their armed forces, instead taking in the lighter M8 Greyhound car and using the T17 until the M8 production could be started. Had it been adopted, it would've been designated the ''M6''.

===British Adoption===
During the T17's development, the British Purchasing Commission was also looking for a medium armoured car that could be used in the current campaign in North Africa. British requirements were a bit different than the American's and asked for the turret of the car to house at least two people and with a radio in the turret rather than in the hull. The British soon adopted the car and named it the ''"Deerhound"'', with production starting in October 1942. The T17E1 was also adopted as the ''"Staghound"'' and the British requested a production of 300 for testing, after which they then ordered another 1,500 for use. Production for the T17E1 also started on October 1942. When the US Army standardized their armoured cars to the M8 Greyhounds, the British vouched for the T17E1 production to continue for their use, to which the T17 was cancelled in early 1943 and only T17E1 were brought in by Lend-Lease. About 4,000 T17E1 "Staghounds" were produced in total for British use.

===T17E2===
While the armoured car variants of the T17 served as a light reconnaissance force and armoured car regiments, some were converted into self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. The T17E1 was modified with a new turret developed by Frazer-Nash that equipped two .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns, this modified vehicle was given the name '''T17E2'''. The turret was open-topped, had an electric-hydraulic traverse system, and reduced the number of crew on the T17E2 to three: the commander, gunner, and driver. About 789 Staghounds were converted into the T17E2, also named the ''"Staghound AA"'', in the period of October 1943 and April 1944.
The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a rank {{Specs|rank}} British Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.55 "Royal Armour"]] along with the rest of the British tree.

This is a low rank British AA car, which, while lacking armour, can pack quite the punch. It has two 20 mm autocannons on its turret, and good manoeuvrability and speed. Unlike the AA of many other countries at this rank, this is a closed top vehicle, and performs well in anti-tank roles.

== General info ==
=== Survivability and armour ===
{{Specs-Tank-Armour}}
The AEC AA lacks armour, although it is protected from most smaller calibre machine guns at its battle rating. It is advisable to attempt to position yourself above an enemy, so that: A) they will have a lower ability to see you, and B) so that they will most likely end up shooting the lower part of the tank, which juts out. If they shoot here with an AP shell, it will most likely go straight through and merely take out your transmission.
== Usage in battles ==
The AEC AA can be used as a support tank in most battles and excels at ambushes. It works well at holding down a capture point, or setting traps along roads. It is advisable to always stay near allies so that you can receive help if necessary. If you choose to play the original role of anti-aircraft, make sure to stay in an open (but safe) area, allowing you full range of fire. Sometimes it is advisable to "harass" planes by giving scattered fire to make them think you are a light tank, and then pretending you don't notice them turning to attack you. Aim down the scope until they are within firing range, and shred them to pieces before they have time to react.

Due to the heavy ammunition consumption as SPAA in AA fights, stay at an allied capture point to get free ammunition reload during battle.

When encountering an enemy that's armour can't be pierced, attempt to immobilise the vehicle by disabling the tracks. From here, multiple options are available for the {{PAGENAME}} depending on the foe. If the enemy has known weak spots, the {{PAGENAME}} could attempt to manoeuvre to a favourable position. If the enemy is known to be impervious to the {{PAGENAME}}'s armaments, simply keep them disabled (hit the gun barrel as well to increase the enemy's repair time), drop artillery, and withdraw to a safe position until a friendly with a bigger gun can handle the situation.

=== Pros and cons ===

'''Pros:'''

* Excellent rate of fire
* Fast and mobile with good acceleration
* Closed top, can't be strafed from the sky or hit by artillery shrapnel
* Good turret armour
* Fast turret rotation speed
* 20 mm cannon velocity gives good anti-air capability
* Can decimate lightly armoured tank destroyers

'''Cons:'''

* Useless against heavily armoured tanks
* Low ammo capacity can't allow for reckless firing
* Poor hull armour
* Taller than other vehicles, making it a large target (easier to hit)
* Has wheels, therefore it can't turn on the spot
* Terrible at driving off-road and on sand or mud
* Turret ring is fairly large, therefore it may become jammed often if hit
* Not enough gun depression (be careful when getting up hills)

== History ==
<!-- ''Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. ===Development===
The basis of the armoured car comes from Associated Equipment Company (AEC) of Southall, Middlesex. AEC was a manufacturer of truck and bus chassis and the Matador artillery tractor. The armoured car was privately developed in 1941 and was based off the Matador. The design was shown to British officials in the same year during the Horse Guards Parade and was received favourably by many, including Winston Churchill. Orders started filing in for the armoured car, and AEC tried to give it comparable firepower to current tanks at the time. Thus, the first version, Mk.I, came with a turret adapted from the [[Valentine Mk I|Valentine tank]] equipped with the 2-pounder. The next version, Mk.II, had this upgraded with a heavier turret and a 6-pounder gun, then with the QF 75 mm gun on the Mk.III. An anti-aircraft version using the same turret from the [[Crusader AA Mk II]] and the twin Oerlikon guns was also developed onto the armoured car. During its production life from 1942 to 1943, 629 Armoured cars in total were built.

===Combat usage===
The Armoured cars equipped with the tank guns were used in North Africa in late 1942. Some on-field modifications include changing out the Valentine turret for a [[Crusader Mk III|Crusader]] turret with the 6-pounder. The armoured cars continued to see fighting in various parts of Europe in combination with other armoured cars and remained in service until replaced by the Alvis Saladin in 1958.

Though the anti-aircraft version was made, it never entered production due to the growing Allied air superiority over the Axis forces, making the anti-aircraft version unnecessary to guard the advancing Allied units from air attacks.
=== Pros and cons ===

'''Pros:'''

* Fast 900+ rounds/min firerate allows it easily score hits with a burst on an aircraft's flight path
* Small profile makes it very easy to conceal itself
* High top speed of 90 km/h means great agility
* Lack of armour means conventional cannons will struggle to one-shot it if poorly aimed
* 75-round belt allows it to confidentally engage targets without worrying too much about reloading

'''Cons:'''

* The driving compartment can obstruct the autocannon's gun depression which might be sometimes fatal
* No armour protection, making it highly vulnerable to MG bullets, shrapnel, and even ramming from tanks and aircraft
* Is wheeled, meaning its mobility will be significantly worsened on bad road conditions
* Reverse speed of -13 km/h can be inadequate, especially when comparing to its counterpart [[R3 T20 FA-HS|R3 T20]]
* Gunsight is position far above the gun, which can be awkward to aim in simulator
* Complex appearance can make it hard to place bushes, decorators, and decals

Up until the early 1980’s, the SADF anti-air regiments were reliant on towed equipment. However, as the military doctrine shifted towards mobile warfare, the need for a self-propelled anti-air gun unit became clear. As a result, South African engineers began working on a respective design, which had to be rugged enough to withstand the harsh South African terrain and threat of landmines, yet light enough to ensure a high level of mobility.

Building on the basis of a previous mine-resistant vehicle project, the engineers came up with a light SPAAG design, built on top of the Bulldog APC chassis between 1983 and 1984. Entering service almost immediately, the Ystervark was used to accompany South African mechanized battalions and to protect strategic assets, such as air bases in the southwest African region. Ystervarks were first employed operationally during Operation Thunder Chariot in 1984 - a division -scale exercise in South Africa during which the Ystervarks were first tested.

However, the Ystervarks didn’t have to wait long for their first combat deployment. Taking part in several operations in the ongoing South African Border War from 1986, Ystervarks were used to great success as deterrents to low-flying Angolan attack aircraft and helicopters, even downing several Angolan MiG’s in 1986 and 1987. After the conclusion of the Border War in 1989, the Ystervark was gradually being phased out of service in 1991 and replaced by the SAMIL 100 Kwêvoël mine-protected SPAAG armoured truck called the Bosvark. Officially, the Ystervark was withdrawn from active service in 1997 after more than 70 units were produced.

== Usage in battles ==
Though the Crusader AA Mk.II was meant for SPAA, the twin 20 mm cannons mean this vehicle can annihilate thin-skinned vehicles with ease, such as the [[8,8 cm Flak 37 Sfl.]] or the [[M15A1 CGMC]], as the 20 mm will slice through the thin half-track armour to knock out the crew.

'''''Prefered fighting locations'''''<br>
Due to the heavy ammunition consumption as SPAA in AA fights, stay at "safe" capture points to get free ammunition to reload during battle. If forced to return to a cap point early in the game, this will often be a death sentence.

'''''Ammunition'''''<br>
This vehicle has multiple uses depending on which type of ammunition is selected.

'''HET''' is recommended for destroying planes, but it would be impossible to destroy a tank with them. If such an encounter occurs, get out of the vicinity and do not draw the attention of tanks like the [[T-34-57]] or [[Tiger H1|Tiger]] will one shot this SPAA. When shooting planes try to aim for bombers and ground attack planes as they won't be able to outmanoeuvre the shots.

'''APT''' rounds gives a lot more choices. Though it is a Rank 3 vehicle, the low battle rating means it will be matched against Rank 2 opponents, many of which won't stand a chance if shot from the sides with APT. If in a higher rank battle (with opponents like the [[Panther D]] and the [[IS-1]]), this tactic will often not work. However, the Mark II can still tear apart tracks and gun barrels just as easily with the APT rounds.

As for the '''default''' belt, it is probably better off changing to prioritize HET or APT.

Due to the relatively low ammo reserve, only take one type of belt with you and take as much you can carry as the ammo will run out quickly when it is split apart for both belts.

Due to the closed nature of the vehicle, the Crusader AA Mk.II doesn't need to worry about strafing fighters as they will often not do any serious damage to the crew. However, ground attackers like the [[IL-2_(1942)|IL-2]] or [[P-47D-25|Thunderbolt]] are still just as deadly. Though more protected from machine gun fire, its armour is not enough to stand against enemy tanks, which would slice through the armour with shots from their cannons.

=== Pros and cons ===

'''Pros:'''

* Using [[Crusader Mk II]]'s chassis - fast with a low profile.
* High fire rate and a quick reload.
* Closed-top AAA - the crew is well protected from strafing planes.
* Extremely dangerous for vehicles with the armour of 40 mm or less.
* Rank III vehicle - suitable for completing missions for war bonds and events.
* Lightly armoured vehicles like armoured cars, SPAA, and tank side armour can be an easy target to the rapid-fire 20 mm autocannons.

'''Cons:'''

* Limited ammo supply (can be a problem when losing on one point maps).
* Essentially the armour of a Rank 1 tank.
* Can only penetrate medium tanks like the Panzer IVs from the side at close range, any more armour will leave the SPAA armament useless.
* Contemporary to the German [[Wirbelwind]], but with less firepower, less anti-tank ability, and less hull armour.
* No improvement in firepower compared to the 20 mm Oerlikon cannons on the Armoured Car Mk.II AA.

===Development===
In 1938, the General Staff of the British Army requested a cruiser tank that was lighter and more affordable than the heavier A16 cruiser design developed by Nuffield Mechanizations & Aero. One of these designs was the designation ''Tank, Cruiser Mk.V'' based off the [[A13 Mk I|A13 cruiser tanks]], named the "Covenanter", and Nuffield was invited to become part of its development team, but they refused due to interest in developing their own cruiser tank. Their tank was designated the '''Tank, Cruiser Mk.VI Crusader''' and fell under the General Staff specification of ''A15''. The Crusader was a parallel design to the Covenanter but was ready six weeks earlier than the Covenanter despite starting at a later time. The Crusader was adopted into service with the British Army in 1941 and the 5,300 units were manufactured between 1940 to 1943.

===Design===
The Crusader features a new design that differs from its cruiser tank predecessors. The Christie suspension system on the Crusader had five road wheels for it instead of the usual four, which improves weight distribution of the increased 20-ton weight of the Crusader compared to the 14 tons of the A13 cruisers. The engine, steering system, and cooling system on the Crusader was different as well, but the Covenanter and Crusader use the same main turret. The polygonal shape of the turret gives the crew inside more room for the turret ring diameter.

The Crusader Mk.I and ''[[Crusader Mk II|Mk.II]]'' were equipped with the 2-pounder, which was aimed by the gunner inside with a padded shaft that allows them to elevate the gun by simply adjusting his own height. Later in the war where an up-gun of the tank armament was necessary and newer tanks such as the [[Cromwell V|Cromwell]] was delayed, the Crusader was upgraded into the ''[[Crusader Mk III]]'' variant with a 6-pounder instead, which restricted turret space, requiring the turret crew to be reduced from three to two. These saw the first action the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942.

===Combat usage===
The Crusader first saw action at North Africa, right after the British had been pushed back to the Egyptian border by Axis forces. The Crusaders were part of the huge shipment in the Malta Convoys to reequip the British forces there. Enough Crusaders arrive that the entire 6th Royal Tank Regiment was refitted with them, which joined up with the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment to form the 7th Armoured Brigade "Desert Rats". The brigade's first action was in Operation Battleaxe, though it was delayed due to adapting the tanks for the desert environment. The operation, which called for the relieve of the siege of Tobruk in June, was initiated in June to which 11 Crusader tanks were lost to anti-tank guns, plus many more to mechanical faults. While more Crusader tanks came in to reinforce the cruiser tank forces, there were never enough to supply the continuously expanding armoured units as 7th Brigade was combined with the 7th Hussars, the 2nd Armoured Brigade was added to the 7th Armoured Division, and the 8th Hussars was combined with the 4th Armoured Brigade. Overall, the Crusaders proved effective in the North African Campaign, the Crusader was faster than any tanks on the opposing side and the 2-pounder was lethal to the [[Pz.III J|Panzer III]], but the tank suffered from its thin armour, mechanical problems in the desert, and the growing deficiency of the 2-pounder, which didn't have enough range to destroy farther tanks. The Crusader design also caused the ammo racks on the tank to easily ignite due to unprotected racks and shot traps on the turret design. Anti-tank guns continue to be the main reason the Crusader units suffer losses, rather than to enemy tanks.

By the end of 1941, only the 2nd Armoured Brigade retained the Crusaders, the rest of the other tank units were being refitted with better tanks, such as the [[Grant I|M3 Grant medium tank]] from the American Lend-Lease. Crusader units were also refitted with the more powerful Crusader Mk.III with the 6-pounder, which improved the Crusader's ability to destroy the gradually stronger German tanks. After General Bernard Montgomery took command of the British Army in 1942, more British tank units were re-equipped with the Grant and [[M4|M4 Sherman]] tanks while the Crusaders were relegated from the front-lines to "light squadrons" meant to flank the enemy and attacked at its exposed sides. When the British 1st Army engaged the Axis at Tunisia, some tank regiments still use Crusaders mixed in with [[Valentine Mk I|Valentine tanks]]. These units in the 26th Armoured Brigade, code-named "Blade Force", worked alongside the 78th Infantry Division as an independent armoured column. During Tunisia, the 1st Army was already converting the tank regiments into Shermans, but the 8th Army continued to use the Crusaders for much longer, which would see use at the Battle of Wadi Akarit and Mareth Line.

After the North African Campaign, the Crusaders no longer saw any use in the front-lines and were used in other roles such as gun tractors with 17-pounders or anti-aircraft mounts such as the '''[[Crusader AA Mk I|Crusader AA Mk.I]]''' and ''[[Crusader AA Mk II|Mk.II]]'' Some Crusader tanks equipped the tank regiments that stayed back at the British Homelands such as the 11th Armoured Division.

The AA tank Mark II replaced the obsolete Mark VI AA tanks that had been in the four-vehicle anti-aircraft troop in a British armoured regiment or infantry tank battalion, starting with the Normandy landings. The lack of German air targets meant they were largely used against ground targets. These regimental AA troops in France in 1944 used a mix of Crusader Mark IIs, Crusader AA Mk IIIs (which had a coaxial machine gun as well), and similarly armed Centaur AA tanks (based on an early version of the Cromwell that was also no longer useful as a battle tank).

===Survivors===
About 21 Crusaders still exist intact in various parts of the world. The most notable places with the Crusaders are South Africa with 8 known survivors, a running [[Crusader Mk III]] at Bovington Tank Museum at England, and an anti-aircraft version at Musée des Blindés in France.
