* Crew of 848 is above average

*

Cons:

* Long reload compared to most of its competition with minimum reload at 17.1s.
* Poor shell selection with primarily inter-war shells.

*

The Portland Class cruisers were the third heavy cruiser design on the American's produced in the interwar years, following the Northampton class. There were only two ships in this class, the USS Portland CA-33 and the USS Indianapolis CA-35. Interestingly the Portland Class was originally planned to be a light cruiser design, being re-designated as heavy cruisers only after the hulls had been laid down in 1931.

Ships of the class were propelled by 4 screws, powered at 107,000 horsepower. This gave the ship a fairly standard top speed of 32 knots and a cruising range of 10,000 nautical miles.

Firepower was provided from 3 triple 8" guns in Mk. 14 turrets. This design was carried over from the previous Northampton Class. These 280 ton turrets allowed a maximum of 41 degrees of elevation and 5 degrees of depression. The turrets were used in conjunction with the Mk.34 fire director system by, at the latest, 1945.
The name is a rank rank British motor gun boat 1. It was introduced in Update 1.83 "Masters of the Sea" along with the British fleet.

General info
Survivability and armour
The Fairmile A has little to no armour, therefore a few good shots to the engine and ammo rack will make quick work of the Fairmile A. The Fairmile A has a crew of 14, which is small compared to the Soviet OD-200 and the German R-boot R-41. In terms of survivability, it is best to stay at a distance of about 1.40km from the enemy, so you're just out of reach. But you don't want be to far otherwise you wont be able to hit the target with the 3 pdr armament.

Mobility
The Fairmile A has a top speed of around 37km/h. It is fairly slow at turning. Since the Fairmile A has a low top speed, it is hard to catch up to the more agile motor torpedo boats, but you should be able to catch up to similar ships such as the Soviet OD-200.

Armament
Primary armament
3 pdr QF Hotchkiss (47 mm)

The primary Gun is a 3 pdr QF Hotchkiss cannon. It is very slow at reloading and has a slow firing rate. It cannot fire towards the front of the ship, only from the sides or rear of the ship due to its positioning. However, the 3 pdr is capable of taking out motor torpedo boats and other ships. The 3 pdr has a high explosive (HE) shell, of which a single shot can destroy a motor torpedo boat at close range if you aim for the engine or ammo rack.

Secondary armament
Lewis (7.7 mm)

In addition to the 3 pdr QF Hotchkiss cannon, the Fairmile A (ML100) has three turrets with dual-mount 7.72mm Lewis machine guns. They are capable to destroy lightly armored motor torpedo boats and enemy planes.

Special armament
12 x Mk.VII depth charge

Usage in the battles
The best way to use this ship is to take out other slow moving ships with the 3 pdr gun. The main gun fires very slowly and is slow to reload, so its best to switch to the Lewis guns scattered around the ship to take out any approaching boats. Watch out for other motor torpedo boats that are approaching, as this boat is a bit slow so they will hit you with torpedoes if you don't shoot first.

Pros and cons
<!--Summarize and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Do not use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - they have a substitution in the form of softer "inadequate", "effective".-->
Pros:

* Good 3pdr gun
* Three turrets of dual-mounted Lewis guns
* Access to 12 depth chargers

Cons:

* 3 pdr gun is slow to fire and reload
* Boat is a bit slow.

History
The Fairmile A was a series of 12 ships designed prior to the start of WWII, with the British Admiralty purchasing all 12 at the start of hostilities. Intended to serve as a light coastal patrol craft the had a unique modular design that could be manufactured by light industry prior to final assembly at a second line port, such as the ones that fabricated pleasure craft.

The ships were originally intended for coastal escort duties, being rigged with sonar and depth charges. However, as the war progressed and due to the lightweight design of the Fairmile A the ships would see selective service restricted to British coastal waters much more so than the later variations of the same vessel.

Talk about the history of the creation and military application of the ship in greater detail than in the introduction. If there turns out to be too much historical information, put it in a separate article, taking the link to the vehicle article and adding the “/historical” block to it (e.g. https://wiki.warthunder.ru/Vehicle-name/historical) and add a link to it here using the main template.

Pros:

* Good 3pdr gun

The name is a rank rank American destroyer 1. It was introduced in Update 1.79 "Project X" as part of the fleet closed beta test.

The ship is, along with the similarly names Somers (DD-381), the ultimate destroyer ship in the American tree.

General info
Survivability and armour
The USS Sumner has very little but still significant armor. Encased in 19mm of antifragmentation hull armor and 13mm of antifragmentation deck armor, the USS Sumner's armor won't stop any destroyer or larger caliber guns armed with AP or HE with Base fuse. What the minor amount of armor can do is stopping machine gun fire from PT boats and near hit splash damage. However, the major weak point of this ship is the paper thin armor on the dual gun turrets. Anything from 50 caliber machine guns to what seems like a stiff breeze can and will knock out 1/3 of the ship's offensive armament. Understandably, once this ship is targeted by more than one other destroyer, the USS Sumner is quick to sink.
Notes:

* The radar atop the bridge is covered with an antifragmentation armour with 19 mm thickness.
* Gun shields around the 20 mm Oerlikon autocannons are 12.7 mm thick.

Mobility
The USS Sumner's vastly increased firepower compared to previous destroyers come at yet more cost to the max speed of the vessel. While not much, the decrease in 1 or 2 km/h in max speed is noticeable on larger maps as much faster Russian or German ships could appear to have flanked this ship with their much faster max speeds. However, the USS Sumner gains one additional rudder over previous US destroyers, greatly increasing the turn rate of the ship and allowing much greater maneuverability. This is especially noticeable in dodging torpedoes.
History
The Sumner class was introduced as a improvement to the previous Fletcher Class destroyers incorporating many of the lessons learned during the war. Twin 5" guns simplified the deck layout to allow for the installation of more powerful anti-aircraft battery. Two quad 40mm Bofors mounts and two dual 40mm Bofors mounts supplied heavy anti-aircraft fire with 11 x 20mm guns further improving the weight of fire coming from the ship.

Majority of the class would find service in the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1945 serving as fleet escort. Several in the class would serve as radar picket ships during and after the Battle of Okinawa.

Post War service saw many ships undergoing significant upgrades with the last of the class decommissioned from US Navy service on December 15, 1973.
