The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a premium rank {{Specs|rank}} American light cruiser {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.93 "Shark Attack"]].

== General info ==
=== Survivability and armour ===
<!-- ''Talk about the vehicle's armour. Note the most well-defended and most vulnerable zones, e.g. the ammo magazine. Evaluate the composition of components and assemblies responsible for movement and manoeuvrability. Evaluate the survivability of the primary and secondary armaments separately. If necessary, use a graphical template to show the most well-protected or most vulnerable points in the armour.'' -->
Armour on Helena is pretty strong for a light cruiser, as it can definitely hold out against large calibre HE shells. One should remember that Brooklyn-class cruisers oftentimes could survive a torpedo hit, so if you have enough crew, you can easily tank one or even two torpedoes. Your main concern while playing Helena should be high calibre AP shells, as they can wreck your ship in no time, especially if they are coming from fast reloading guns like American 5"/38, or if they are shot at you by a ship with lots of guns like [[IJN Suzuya]].

Turret face armour is 165 mm, side, rear and top armour are 76 mm, 76 mm, and 51 mm thick respectively, and mantlets are 100 mm of RHA. Barbettes are 152 mm of rolled cemented armour. Secondaries are protected only by 32 mm of antifragmentation armour, so expect them to be knocked out as soon as any high calibre shell hits them.

Bow ammo magazines are protected by 51 mm of antifragmentation armour on the top and sides, and 127 mm of antifragmentation armour in the front. They are also hidden deep below the waterline and behind fuel tanks, which makes them a very difficult target. Aft shells and charges are protected from the top and rear by the same armour as bow magazines, but since there are no fuel tanks, they get 120 mm rolled cemented armour as side armour. Rear of the bow ammo stowage and front of the aft ammo stowage are protected by 95 mm of rolled cemented armour. Ammo elevators are protected by 127 mm of antifragmentation armour.

Bridge is protected by 127 mm of antifragmentation armour on the sides and 57 mm of the same armour on the top.

Thanks to the unit system (engines and boilers are alternating inside the hull) it's very hard to disable propulsion on the ship, even with a torpedo.

'''Pros:'''

* 2 x triple-mount 6 inch and 2 x dual-mount 5 inch cannons can fire straight ahead, allowing decent firepower while only exposing a small silhouette towards the enemy
* Extensive use of antifragmentation armour, rendering Helena as almost HE-"proof"
* Best citadel armour out of all light cruisers in the game
* One of the highest main calibre fire rates out of all light cruisers (10 rpm)
* Very hard to disable all of the engines with one torpedo hit, thanks to unit system of machinery (transmission and engines are alternated inside the ship)
* Highest ammo count out of all cruisers
* Shells and charges are hidden below waterline, are protected by loads of antifragmentation armour, rolled cemented armour and fuel, making it very hard to one hit kill Helena
* Second thickest turret face in the game (only [[Chapayev]] and [[Sverdlov]] have thicker turret armour)
* Second best AA in game in terms of amount of guns, best AA in game in terms of ammo and flexibility (out of all light cruiser that is)
* Mobility is comparable to other ships (except top tier Japanese and Italian cruisers)
* Bridge is protected by 127 mm of antifragmentation armour
* One of the highest crew counts in the game

'''Cons:'''

* Citadel and ammoracks are well armoured, but other parts of the ship are protected by only 16 mm of antifragmentation armour
* Detonation of forward magazines will destroy all shells for the front turrets, depriving the ship 3/5ths of its firepower
* There are some shells hidden inside barbettes, so unlucky hit may cause heavy fires or even one hit kill a ship
* Auxiliary turrets have their first stage ammo stowages unprotected, so unlucky hits may cause heavy fires
* Second worst 152 mm penetration in game (but it's still enough to kill any vessel)
* Turret No. 3 can shoot only when retreating or when showing broadside
* No torpedo armament

The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a gift rank {{Specs|rank}} Japanese destroyer {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced during [[Update 1.89 "Imperial Navy"]] as a reward for the [[wt:en/news/6293/current|Operation H.E.A.T event]].
''Write about the ship's mobility. Evaluate its power and manoeuvrability, rudder rerouting speed, stopping speed at full tilt, with its maximum forward speed and reverse speed.''

== Armament ==
=== Primary armament ===
{{main|Type 3 (127 mm)}}
The ''Yuudachi's'' main armament is comprised of five 127mm Type 3 cannons in two dual and one single gun turret. Note that none of the turrets are superfiring, requiring a broadside to bring all guns to bear.

The Type 3 cannon is the same one found on most of the modern IJN destroyers. Unfortunately, it suffers from multiple drawbacks such as slow reload and traverse speed. This makes the cannon relatively ineffective against aircraft, coupled with the lack of proximity fuse shells (only time-fused shells are available). It also does not have access to any armor-piercing rounds, limiting its effectiveness against heavy warships. The cannons will do just fine against destroyers and small craft, but the poor rate of fire will leave you unable to win against most other destroyers in a straight up gun battle. However, you are still much more well-armed than reserve destroyers, and can destroy most of them in an even fight.

=== Secondary armament ===
{{main|40 mm/62 Vickers (40 mm)}}
The ship's anti-air armament includes two 40mm cannons mounted near the ship's center, with one gun on each side of the ship. These cannons gain access to time-fused shells, which is unusual for their caliber. While these cannons are not as powerful as the [[Bofors L/60 Mark 1 (40 mm)]], they can still pack quite a punch towards aircraft and small ships. They have a reasonably fast rate of fire, although they will need to reload often. In order to utilize these cannons to their full potential, make sure to max out your crew training for auxiliary cannons so that your AI can take down planes for you. Despite this, the ''Yuudachi'' is not equipped with enough weapons to deal with aircraft alone. Try to stick near friendlies with more automatic cannons who are able to protect you.

The ''Yuudachi'' is not equipped with any other secondary artillery systems.

=== Torpedo armament ===
{{main|Type 93 Model 1, Mod 2}}
The ''Yuudachi'' is equipped with a very formidable eight torpedo launchers in two quad mounts. In addition, the ship carries an extra set of torpedo reloads, totaling to 16 torpedoes. The torpedoes carried by this destroyer are the very powerful [[Type 93 Model 1, Mod 2]] torpedoes, commonly known as the "Long Lance". These torpedoes have a very lethal warhead; they are the third most powerful torpedoes in the game by explosive mass. They are also incredibly fast and have a very long range, being able to reach over 20km. This grants the Yuudachi a significant advantage in long range combat, as the torpedoes can outrange even cruisers. It is a good idea to stay out of harm's way and launch torpedoes at the general direction of enemy warships, this will usually lead to a few unlucky enemies running into torpedoes. These torpedoes are capable of sinking most destroyers with one hit, as well as crippling, if not outright destroying cruisers. The torpedo reload feature allows you to carry an extra set of torpedoes in Realistic Battles. In Arcade Battles, they will allow you to fire your second spread of torpedoes faster.

Due to their extreme range, high damage and fast speeds, the torpedoes are by far the most valuable weapons on the ''Yuudachi''.

=== Special armament ===
{{main|Type 95 depth charge}}
The warship is equipped with a few depth charge launchers on the ship's stern. Due to the lack of submarines in the game, these weapons are not useful as they require you to get extremely close to an enemy to utilize them. At these ranges, conventional gunfire and torpedoes are more effective.

== Usage in battles ==
Since the ship is revolved mainly around its torpedoes, the effectiveness of the ship is dependant on the map. The Yuudachi excels in long range maps with little to no cover. This combination allows the Yuudachi to stay at long range, far away from most threats, while being able to launch torpedoes that can travel across the entire map.

The ship especially excels in Conquest gamemodes for this reason. Alternatively, it can be a strong ship for the Encounter gamemode, since the torpedoes will allow the Yuudachi to attack the enemy convoy from long range, often from the start of a battle.

Usage of this ship will mostly to be slinging torpedoes from a long range. In Arcade battles, you can fire off as many as you want thanks to unlimited amount of torpedoes. Try to target large groups of ships and fire at a relative average of their heading. It is also a good idea to fire torpedoes at an area that you'd predict multiple ships would pass through, such as choke points. This will allow you to score multiple kills without firing a single shot from your artillery. In Realistic battles, you are limited to only 16 torpedoes so you have to play more conservatively and to release your torpedoes more carefully and at more worthy targets. The Yuudachi is still capable of fighting other ships in an artillery battle, but due to the cannons' low fire rate, you will either need support or have your enemy distracted to win against more modern destroyers. Being a destroyer, the ship is also good at dealing with enemy gunboats and frigates, as you will outgun them at range.

* Relatively maneuverable
* Equipped with five 127mm cannons
* Often faces weaker ships thanks to relatively low battle rating
* Has access to the very deadly Long Lance torpedo, and can carry sixteen of them
The Yūdachi is one of the Shiratsuyu-class destroyers designed with consideration in the restrictions of the London Naval Treaty in place during the period of 1933-1937. All ten destroyers of this class had histories replete with adventure and combat. They were active in Japan’s naval war in the Pacific ocean, the conquests in the Philippines and Indonesia, and the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal.

Especially noteworthy is the Yūdachi’s final battle in November of 1942, when, after a nocturnal assault, the small ship found herself at the head of a large squadron that had literally collided head first with American ships defending the Solomon Islands. The American formation was thrown into chaos by this unexpected encounter between fleets. Ships from the opposing sides began to manoeuvre, changed course, and eventually became inextricably intermingled. This led to a horrific 40-minute close combat, in which the Yūdachi found herself behind the enemy front line. Seeing that the squadron’s flagship, the battleship Hiei, was taking heavy fire, the commander of the Yūdachi steered his ship into the thickest part of the battle. The destroyer wound up between two ships, both of which attacked her at once: the USS Juneau, a light cruiser, and the USS Aaron Ward, a destroyer. Taking hit after hit, the Yūdachi tried to torpedo the Juneau. The next torpedo volley hit the USS Portland, the hull of which was massively breached as a result. Parts of the damaged aft section caused a “bump steer,” and the ship could only move in circles until the end of the battle. Unceasingly firing her artillery at the enemy ships, the Yūdachi mistook the destroyer USS Sterett for a friendly vessel, where she paid for her mistake – the Sterett disabled the Japanese ship’s powertrain with a torpedo volley, immobilising the Yūdachi where surviving crew members were evacuated. It wasn’t until the following morning that the heavy cruiser the USS Portland, which had been hit by the little destroyer, sank the brave ship with six volleys.
* 20 mm composite boron-carbide - pilot/gunner seats
* 12 mm steel - pilot seat

When fighting the AH-1Z, it is always a good bet to get the "High Ground" or altitude advantage of this vehicle. Try to strafe it and get around to its blinds spot, as it can't use the tail rotor effectively when moving, and will yaw and flip when making a strong attempt to turn-on-target. Always aim for the cockpit, as one the gunner is knocked out the turret becomes unusable. When coming up against a Zulu with gun pods, or and secondary weapons (Especially the lethal AIM-9L), know that the pilot can still fire these even if the Gunner in knocked out. However, it is unlikely that a Zulu will take a gun pod over a full missile rack.
==Usage in battles==
Using the AH-1Z Viper after the AH-1F requires learning time, the playstyle between this and the AH-1F has some unique differences such as ammunition, views and overall playstyle.

The AH-1Z is an attack helicopter, it does this role very well, in fact, it is one of the best attack helicopters in the game, with speed up to 411 kph (255 mph). The AH-1Z offers a large array of ordnance selections, from mini-guns, rockets, TOW, TOW-2 and Hellfire missiles. In addition, the AH-1Z Can carry a combination of missiles, rockets or mini-guns together.
To get one of the best configurations, specialize in what you want to do, air protection or ground attack, either way, this attack helicopter can do it.

To utilize the AH-1Z viper, make sure to adjust the tactics to the map, for example, maps, with rocks and hilly terrain, stay low and use it as cover whilst you get to into a position which will allow you to dominate the battlefield. For maps which are open and flat, climb to a high altitude and assess the situation, just make sure to scan the map and not get fixed on a location.

The AH-1Z has three main playstyles, the playstyles of this attack helicopter are focused around dominating in the following roles: Air Protection/Support, Medium & Close Range and Long Range.

However, the AH-1F does have one drawback, due to the increase in size changes to the centre of gravity in high pitch and tight turns, it is possible to lose control. It is advisable to always counteract by keeping the nose of the helicopter level or to lessen the turn radius. If required to do one, such as evading surface to air missiles, make sure that there is enough room to recover the helicopter in – ideally at least 1000 feet and make sure to increase the pitch of the blades to a 100% adjust for yawing.

====Close/medium Range====
The AH-1Z offers a combination of wing-mounted ordnance and ordnance packages which are available from TOW, TOW-2, Rocket pods, Machine guns.

The AH-1Z has the BGM-71 TOW and BGM-71 TOW-2 ATGM missile systems which perform very well. The BGM-71 TOW-2. The BGM-71 TOW-2 is faster than the BGM-71 TOW And in addition, it contains a higher explosive amount. Nevertheless, both versions of the TOW missile system are able to be very decisive in combat, it is ideal to use the BGM-71 TOW-2 system over the BGM-71 TOW since it is a better system, due to its higher explosive and speed.

It can carry up to 16 TOW or TOW-2 missiles, that is enough lethality to terminate up to 16 enemy units. The TOW missiles work in the same way as on the other series of Cobra attack helicopters, they are able to hit, fast and hard. Combined with the speed of the AH-1Z, these make a lethal combination. The AH-1Z can find a great tactical location, engage the targets and knock them out of the fight without them even knowing.

An AH-1Z also can carry additional ordnances which are wing-mounted only, these are rocket pods & machine guns or a combination of Hellfire’s, TOW’s, Rockets & machine guns. The rockets are standard FFAR Mighty Mouse rockets which are equipped on the version of the Cobras and Huey helicopters. A good choice of combined ordnance are Mighty Mouse and TOW's or just Mighty Mouse. That way you can increase the engagement range when you are flying in combat after consuming all the TOW missiles or getting at close range and blasting the enemy with Mighty Mouse rockets which will cause a lot of damage and could destroy up to 76 enemy units

====Long Range - Hellfire missiles====
To utilize the long-range performance of the AH-1Z, hover outside of the combat zone. It is important that you check and make sure that there are no threats in the vicinity which could shoot you down. Once the combat zone has been declared safe from vehicles which could destroy you. Increase altitude, until you have a good visual on the objectives. Hover the helicopter, change the view to the gun camera and locate a target ground vehicle and fire! The Hellfire missiles offer up to 1100mm of penetration with a speed of 475 meters per second.

Firing the Hellfire missiles, you will notice that you cannot see them compared to the previous TOW missiles. This is normal, you need to keep the laser designator on the target. On the HUD, left-hand side, you will see a countdown, it takes 10 seconds for the missile to hit the target. When the Hellfire gets close to the target you will see the rocket, this where you can adjust the missile trajectory.

It is very important that after a few Hellfire missile launches that, you disengage the hover and relocate to another part of the battle zone. Performing this action will substantially reduce the chances of being shot down by enemy vehicles.

One of the drawbacks of the Hellfire missiles is, at close range they cannot engage a target, due to how the Hellfires are launched from the wing racks. The Hellfire missile drops from the wing rack then engages the rocket motor and immediately ascend in height, making it impossible to track from launch.

{{Notice|The hellfire missiles require time to adapt, however once learnt they become one of the most potent missiles in the game.|!!!}}

====Air Protection/support====
Best role armament selection: Sidewinder missiles and machine guns

An AH-1Z Viper offers a unique set of capabilities compared to any other helicopter on the battlefield! It can be equipped with Sidewinder air to air missiles. The Sidewinder missiles provide great capacity to shoot down up to two enemy aircraft. They can shoot down other rotary-wing aircraft (helicopters) or fixed-wing aircraft (airplanes). The missiles can also be equipped with the additional payloads, such as Hellfire, TOW missile, machine gun and rocket pod configurations, providing a versatile offensive and defensive solution.

The AH-1Z can outmanoeuvre and outperform, many of the rivals in air to air combat. The AH-1Z has a triple rotary M197 cannon with 750 rounds. Combined with a twin 7.62 mm M134 mini-gun, which also has 1500 Rounds per gun. That’s 3000 rounds plus the 750 rounds that’s 3750 Rounds of ammunition! Then the wing-mounted AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles which are installed on both wings.
To attack other helicopters with the Sidewinders, come in the from the side or rear – get a lock on and fire one of the Sidewinder missiles! Bang the enemy aircraft explodes.

To attack using the cannon and mini-guns, line up with the foe, come in fast and slow down – align your angle of attack with the side of the enemy, this will yield the best chance of success since the enemy unit has exposed the largest elements of the air-frame to your firepower. Aim for the critical components such as cockpit, engine, fuel tanks and rear rotor elements.

===Pros and cons===
<!--''Summarize and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - they have a substitution in the form of softer "inadequate", "effective".''-->
In 1996, the USMC launched the H-1 program in cooperation with the Bell company. The H-1 program was a plan to upgrade and modernize the Navy’s existing fleets of AH-1 and UH-1 helicopters, in order to extend their service life and lower future operating costs. This was achieved by developing a new version of each helicopter model respectively. The new AH-1Z Viper, also known as “ZuluCobra”, received upgraded avionics, fire control systems, engines and an improved four-blade rotor system, among other improvements. Furthermore, both the new Viper and UH-1Y were designed in a way to use mostly identical parts, achieving the desired reduction in operating costs and ease of maintenance as a result. The AH-1Z Viper conducted its maiden flight in December 2000, with three prototypes being built for testing in 2002. Small-scale production began in 2003 before the Viper was approved for full-scale production in November 2010. The USMC has ordered for 189 Vipers to be delivered to the fleet by 2021, with only a few dozen machines being in service today.
The Type 93 Torpedo was a Japanese torpedo put into service in 1933. It is an oxygen-propelled torpedo that was given to surface ships to use against enemy battleships, and was used to deadly effect in the Pacific. In-game, it is mounted on the later Japanese warships, such as the [[IJN Yugumo]] destroyer and [[IJN Furutaka]] cruiser. Compared to most other torpedoes, these torpedoes have exceptionally long range that can reach as far as 20km, move very fast at 93km/h, and packing a very deadly warhead that is capable of sending even the toughest cruisers to the bottom of the ocean with one well-placed hit.
''Tell us about the tactical and technical characteristics of the bomb.''

=== Effective damage ===
<!--Describe the type of damage produced by this type of bomb (high explosive, splash damage, etc)-->

A Type 93 torpedo, with its 627kg equivalent of TNT explosive warhead, is capable of destroying destroyers and cruisers in one hit. Cases where a target would require more than two torpedoes to destroy are exceptionally rare.

=== Comparison with analogues ===
''Give a comparative description of bombs that have firepower equal to these type of weapons.''

== Usage in battles ==
<!--Describe situations when you would utilize this bomb in game (vehicle, pillbox, base, etc)-->

The Type 93 Torpedo is possibly the best ship-launched torpedo in the game with an unrivaled range of 20km, 93km/h speed and 627kg of TNT equivalent explosive power. This gives it the longest range and fastest speed of any ship-launched torpedo in the game, and the second largest torpedo warhead. This will allow you to destroy any ship in the game with a torpedo strike. Destroyers are no match for the Type 93 and even cruisers will have a hard time holding up to a single torpedo strike.

One useful feature of the Type 93 torpedo is that on all ships to which they are mounted on as of [[Update 1.89 "Imperial Navy"]], the torpedo launchers can be reloaded with extra torpedoes stored on the deck of the ship. This feature is very useful in [[Realistic Battles]], as it allows your ship to carry more torpedoes than most other ships which do not sport the ability to reload their torpedoes. In [[Arcade Battles]], this will allow you to have a faster rate of fire for your torpedoes, since the torpedoes will replenish faster than the standard Arcade reload, allowing you to launch 16 torpedoes very quickly.

The Type 93 is a very useful torpedo in the Encounter gamemode, as their long range and fast speed will allow you to strike at the enemy convoy immediately from spawn. They can also be used against players by firing a large spread in an area where one would expect many ships to pass through. They can also catch an enemy ship at a distance where most conventional torpedoes will not be able to reach, off-guard.

=== Pros and cons ===
<!--Summarize and briefly evaluate the weaponry in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark pros and cons as a list.-->
The '''{{specs|name}}''' is a rank {{specs|rank}} American destroyer {{Battle-rating|1}}. It was introduced in [[Update 1.79 "Project X"]] as part of the fleet closed beta test.

The ship is, along with the similarly names [[Somers (DD-381)]], the ultimate destroyer ship in the American tree.

== General info ==
=== Survivability and armour ===
The USS Sumner has very little but still significant armor. Encased in 19mm of antifragmentation hull armor and 13mm of antifragmentation deck armor, the USS Sumner's armor won't stop any destroyer or larger caliber guns armed with AP or HE with Base fuse. What the minor amount of armor can do is stopping machine gun fire from PT boats and near hit splash damage. However, the major weak point of this ship is the paper thin armor on the dual gun turrets. Anything from 50 caliber machine guns to what seems like a stiff breeze can and will knock out 1/3 of the ship's offensive armament. Understandably, once this ship is targeted by more than one other destroyer, the USS Sumner is quick to sink.

* The radar atop the bridge is covered with an antifragmentation armour with 19 mm thickness.
* Gun shields around the 20 mm Oerlikon autocannons are 12.7 mm thick.

=== Mobility ===
The USS Sumner's vastly increased firepower compared to previous destroyers come at yet more cost to the max speed of the vessel. While not much, the decrease in 1 or 2 km/h in max speed is noticeable on larger maps as much faster Russian or German ships could appear to have flanked this ship with their much faster max speeds. However, the USS Sumner gains one additional rudder over previous US destroyers, greatly increasing the turn rate of the ship and allowing much greater maneuverability. This is especially noticeable in dodging torpedoes.
=== Special armament ===
''Depth charges, mines, rocket launchers and missiles are also effective in skilled hands and can be an unexpected surprise for an opponent. Evaluate the ammunition of this type of armament and rate its performance in combat.''

==Usage in battles==
The U.S.S. Sumner is one of the most powerful and versatile destroyers in the game. Equipped with plentiful anti-air armament, strong main guns, and belt armor, it is capable of taking on many roles in combat. The Sumner functions similarly to the [[Cowell (DD-547)]], each can perform the same roles, but the Sumner has some differences that can make it better or worse in some roles.

*'''1. Gunfighter'''

The Sumner is equipped with one more gun than the [[Fletcher (DD-445)]] and [[Cowell (DD-547)]]. While this might not seem a lot, there is a big difference: The guns are mounted in three turrets, each containing two guns. This means that your shells will have better grouping, but the most significant advantage is when you're bow on to an enemy. While the Cowell and Fletcher can only utilize two of it's guns while facing forward, the Sumner has a whopping '''four''', allowing you to deal twice as much damage when you are bow on. The Sumner also fires faster than the Fletcher or Cowell, with a reload of 2.8 seconds aced compared to the Fletcher and Cowell's 3.7 seconds. This allows you to put out a lot more shells in a short period of time compared to the Fletcher class destroyers. Other than that, ship-to-ship combat is relatively similar to the Fletchers. You will be able to take on most destroyers in a straight up battle with your main threats being a [[Somers (DD-381)]], which has 2 more guns than you, the [[Type 1936A (Mob)]] which has larger caliber guns, and the [[Tashkent (leader)]] which possess strong firepower. You gain increased armor protection compared to the Fletcher-class destroyers which will help you in absorbing damage. However, a tradeoff of having your guns set up as 3x2 instead of 5x1 means that when a turret is knocked out, you will lose a third of your firepower which is pretty significant. This is even more dangerous than the fact that your turrets are huge and are easy to take out. Nonetheless, the Sumner is a potent ship when it comes to gunfighting.

*'''2. Anti Air Ship'''

The Sumner, like most of the late-war USN destroyers, has extensive anti-air armament and makes a great anti-air escort ship. A group of Sumners and Cowells can easily deny a large area of enemy aircraft. The Sumner is equipped with radio fuse shells, and with the better shell groupings and faster firing rate compared to the Cowell, your long-range anti air potential is even larger. The Sumner is equipped with 2 more Bofors than the Cowell (2x4 and 2x2 for a total of 12 compared to 5x2 for a total of 10). This means you can easily deal with aircraft at medium and close range, and also gives you the ability to rip apart smaller boats. However, these anti-air guns have worse firing arcs than that of the Cowell (The Cowell can fire four of it's Bofors directly forward, while the Sumner cannot) but nonetheless you are a potent anti-air ship. It is also equipped with 10 20mm Oerlikon cannons, which is 3 more than the Cowell. These will provide you with decent short-range protection. As always, lead your targets when commanding your anti-air and make sure to switch between your main battery for long range (or leave them on AI) and smaller guns for short range.

*'''3. Light Craft Hunter'''

The Bofors of the Sumner make for an extremely effective weapons system to deal with enemy patrol boats and gunboats. They will allow you to shred anything smaller than a destroyer, and even some of the older destroyers will be vulnerable to the sheer volume of fire they can dish out. At longer distances, load HE or Radio Fuse shells to deal with patrol boats and gunboats. Once you close in to about 3 kilometers, begin firing your Bofors cannons instead. If you have good aim, they will take out even the toughest of patrol boats and gunboats within a few seconds. You can also use your main battery to one-shot patrol boats instead if you are a good shot. Try avoid using your 20mm Oerlikon cannons manually though as they do not have the range to deal with ships unlike the Bofors and main guns. Note that unlike the Cowell, you cannot fire off both of your dual bofors directly forward as part of your superstructure blocks the way. To combat this, turn slightly to one side and that will allow them to fire, however you can only fire off one of the 2 turrets on the front of the ship. Turning a bit more will allow your quad Bofors near the stern of the ship to take part. Be on the lookout for any patrol boats that might sneak up on you, however. The Sumner does not take torpedoes well and if one gets a torpedo off on you then there is not much you can do to avoid destruction. If you see a patrol boat nearby, take evasive action to dodge any torpedoes and keep an eye out on the water in the general direction to see if they have launched any torpedoes, and react accordingly.

There are some threats to the Sumner, which include:

* [[Somers (DD-381)]]: This destroyer has the same guns as you, but is equipped with another turret. This means that it will most likely beat you in a one-on-one duel. Try to knock out it's turrets first and keep yours alive to make it even. You also have more armor than it does and you can take more of a punch.
* [[BTD-1]]: Despite your strong AA power, these bombers can still get by and drop off a torpedo before it gets shot down. It carries two torpedoes or a 2000lb bomb, each of which can be lethal to you. Prioritize these bombers as they can be some of the strongest aircraft in Naval combat.
* [[Pe-8]]: These bombers often stay at high altitude and are equipped with 5000kg bombs. These bombs are guaranteed to kill you and it doesn't even need a near miss to cripple or even destroy your ship. Deal with these bombers with Radio-Fuse shells as they have the range to hit them at high altitudes.
* [[Type 1936A (Mob)]]: This destroyer has 150mm guns which can deal significant damage to you. You have a faster fire rate and more durability so use that to your advantage. It is also better to fight them at closer range as their larger guns give them more advantage at longer distances.
* [[Pr. 159]] and [[Pr. 35]]: While these frigates will most likely be unable to kill you, they have fast-firing 76mm guns which can very quickly destroy your turrets and bridge, leaving you a sitting duck for other ships. These ships lack armor protection so if you have good aim you will be able to destroy them with ease. Also, try to fight them at longer distances since you have larger guns. They also don't possess much secondary armament so you can attack them when they are distracted.
* Light Cruisers: Light Cruisers will generally have superior firepower and armor than you. Never fight a cruiser one-on-one, especially at long range. However, your guns can still deal decent damage to them should you gain the opportunity. You should only engage cruisers directly if you are in a group of ships attacking the cruiser or if the cruiser is preoccupied engaging with a friendly cruiser. Be aware of any secondary armament they might have.
* PT Boats: Fast moving PT-Boats can catch you off-guard and fire their torpedoes. You might be able to destroy them but their torpedoes could instantly kill you if they hit. Always be on the lookout for PT boats in all directions and watch for any torpedoes. Even weaker PT-boats such as the [[LS 3]] and [[G-5]] can pose a threat as they move fast and are hard to hit.
Be sure to reference text and sources by using <code><nowiki><ref></nowiki></code>, as well as adding them at the end of the article.-->

The Sumner class was introduced as a improvement to the previous Fletcher Class destroyers incorporating many of the lessons learned during the war. Twin 5" guns simplified the deck layout to allow for the installation of more powerful anti-aircraft battery. Two quad 40mm Bofors mounts and two dual 40mm Bofors mounts supplied heavy anti-aircraft fire with 11 x 20mm guns further improving the weight of fire coming from the ship.

Majority of the class would find service in the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1945 serving as fleet escort. Several in the class would serve as radar picket ships during and after the Battle of Okinawa.

Post War service saw many ships undergoing significant upgrades with the last of the class decommissioned from US Navy service on December 15, 1973.
== Usage in battles ==
The U.S.S. Somers is a powerful ship. This is because of the ship's main armament, which consists of eight 127mm cannons mounted in four dual turrets, gaining an extra turret compared to the Sumner. This gives it the most broadside potential of any destroyer in the game. These guns also fire ridiculously fast at a whopping 2.8 seconds aced. This allows the Somers to have unmatched firepower potential for a destroyer, with it's main rival being the [[Type 1936A (Mob)]] with it's slower firing but larger caliber guns. As such, you should use this ship mainly to combat enemy destroyers. With good aim and luck, you should be able to take on any destroyer in the game in a straight up 1v1 fight. The ship is also equipped with 12 torpedoes, mounted in three quadruple launchers. While these torpedoes lack the reload ability of Japanese destroyers, you are able to fire more torpedoes in a single volley. These launchers are also equipped centerline meaning you can fire them off in any direction. The Somers is capable of dealing significant damage to even cruisers, but you should not fight a cruiser one-on-one as they will still have better firepower and more durability. However, the Somers makes a great support ship to attack a cruiser if it's already engaging a friendly ship.

Unlike a majority of the late-war USN destroyers, the Somers does not have an adequate anti-air suite. The main power of your anti air will be your main battery which is capable of firing Radio-Fuse shells. These will prove to be very useful to deal with enemy aircraft at long range, but you will struggle to deal with enemies that breach your defenses. The ship is also equipped with two "Chicago Piano" anti-air guns, and 2 AN-M2 Browning machine guns. However, you lack the stronger and more modern Oerlikon 20mm and Bofors 40mm cannons that your fellow USN destroyers are equipped with. This means that you have a significant disadvantage when it comes to anti-air protection and as such, you cannot use the Somers as an anti-air ship to the same extent of a [[Sumner (DD-692)]] or [[Cowell (DD-547)]].

=== Pros and cons ===

'''Pros:'''

* Eight 127mm guns, the highest amount of main guns of a destroyer, tied with IJN Akizuki
* Twelve torpedoes, giving it the largest torpedo volley potential of any destroyer.
* Fast firing rate with main guns
* Equipped with Radio Fuse shells to combat aircraft

*

'''Cons:'''

* Weak anti-air armament, only equipped with Chicago Pianos and Browning MGs
* Not as well armored as other USN DDs
* Turrets easy to destroy

*

== History ==
<!--''Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ship in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/ History" (example: <nowiki>https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History</nowiki>) and add a link to it here using the <code>main</code> template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <code><nowiki><ref></nowiki></code>, as well as adding them at the end of the article.''-->
In the mid 1930s, the U.S. Navy ordered the construction of the Somers-class destroyers. Although initially intended to only be repeats of the preceding Porter-class, the availability of a more economical power plant, developed for the Mahan-class, resulted in the Somers design being modified to facilitate this new power plant and being made into a new class entirely.

As a result of using the new power plant, great savings in weight and space were made, allowing for the use of just a single funnel, which made it possible to install a third torpedo launcher on the ship’s aft. Despite these changes however, the design remained overweight and top heavy. Nevertheless, construction commenced, with the lead ship of the class, USS Somers (DD-381) being laid down in June 1935 and commissioned into service in December 1937.

USS Somers (DD-381) spent most of her early service period assigned to various missions in the Atlantic. On one instance, the ship was tasked with transporting a consignment of gold from London to New York in 1938.

During WW2, USS Somers continued operating in the Atlantic, occasionally intercepting German blockade runners and briefly operating off the coast of West Africa in early 1943. In 1944, USS Somers took part in the invasion of Normandy as well as the allied landings in Southern France in the Mediterranean theater.

USS Somers’ final missions are marked with convoy escort duties as part of several transatlantic voyages. In May 1945, USS Somers returned to U.S. waters and underwent overhauls in August, before being decommissioned from active service in October. In May 1947, USS Somers was taken apart for scraps, marking the end of her service life of almost 10 years.
Describe in general terms the ammunition available for the main gun. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage.''

=== Additional armament ===
''Some tanks are armed with several guns in one or more turrets. Evaluate the additional weaponry and give advice on its use. Describe the ammunition available for additional weaponry. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage. If there is no additional weaponry remove this subsection.''

=== Machine guns ===
''Offensive and anti-aircraft machine guns not only allow you to fight some aircraft, but also are effective against lightly armoured vehicles. Evaluate machine guns and give recommendations on its use.''

== Usage in battles ==
''Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).''

=== Pros and cons ===
<!--''Summarize and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - they have a substitution in the form of softer "inadequate", "effective".''-->

'''Pros:'''

* Twin L/70 40mm Bofors guns have a better rate of fire compared to the M42 Duster.
* The 40mm's pose a serious threat to lightly-armored vehicles.
* Uses the M48 Patton's hull (armor included) = one of the best-protected SPAA in the game.
* Benefits in RB from aim assist thanks to the radar.

'''Cons:'''

* As with all high-rank SPAA, very thin turret armor; a shell strike could instantly end the vehicle.
** Turret is also vulnerable to strafing aircraft + rockets.
*Armor advantages are nullified due to the inclusion of the Hull Break mechanic

== History ==
''Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ground vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <code><nowiki><ref></nowiki></code>, as well as adding them at the end of the article.''

== Media ==
''An excellent addition to the article will be video guides, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.''

== See also ==
''Links to the articles on the War Thunder Wiki that you think will be useful for the reader, for example:''
* ''reference to the series of the vehicles;''
* ''links to approximate analogues of other nations and research trees.''
