The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a gift rank {{Specs|rank}} American heavy cruiser {{Battle-rating}}. It was introduced during [[Update "Apex Predators"]] as a reward for the [[wt:en/news/8021-event-winter-quest-en|2022 Winter Quest]] event.

=== Survivability and Armor ===
{{Specs-Fleet-Armour}}
<!-- ''Talk about the vehicle's armour. Note the most well-defended and most vulnerable zones, e.g. the ammo magazine. Evaluate the composition of components and assemblies responsible for movement and manoeuvrability. Evaluate the survivability of the primary and secondary armaments separately. Don't forget to mention the size of the crew, which plays an important role in fleet mechanics. Save tips on preserving survivability for the "Usage in battles" section. If necessary, use a graphical template to show the most well-protected or most vulnerable points in the armour.'' -->
USS Newport News is a Des Moines-class heavy cruiser. This heavy cruiser class is a further development of the Baltimore class, and as such, is decently armored just like its predecessor. The most noticeable difference is that the 6" (152 mm) main belt has been extended to cover the main battery turrets. There are also several 5" (127 mm) bulkheads dividing the citadel into sections, which will help isolating damage in engine and ammunition compartments.

Her main battery turrets are armored similarly to those on Baltimore-class cruisers. Compared to the older turrets, these have slightly thicker armor on the sides and the roof. However, they are significantly larger than the older turrets, and may receive more hits as a result.

Compared to those found on Baltimore-class cruisers, her main battery barbettes have less area consisting of shells. However, she has a big weakness - the magazine of her second turret extends above the waterline. A penetrating hit under her second turret can be devastating.

Like other American cruisers, she lacks meaningful torpedo defense. Captains should watch out for torpedo attacks at all times. If taking a hit is inevitable, try to maneuver the ship so that it takes the hit as close to the bow as possible, since most of the bow is empty space and you can survive with just some flooding.
<!-- ''Provide information about the characteristics of the primary armament. Evaluate their efficacy in battle based on their reload speed, ballistics and the capacity of their shells. Add a link to the main article about the weapon: <code><nowiki>{{main|Weapon name (calibre)}}</nowiki></code>. Broadly describe the ammunition available for the primary armament, and provide recommendations on how to use it and which ammunition to choose.'' -->
{{main|8 inch/55 Mark 16 (203 mm)}}

USS Newport News has [[8 inch/55 Mark 16 (203 mm)]] main guns. These are fundamentally the same gun barrels as those on the Baltimore-class heavy cruisers, but now boast a much higher rate of fire (10 rpm vs 4 rpm of its predecessors), thanks to an automatic loading mechanism. This provides USS Newport News formidable firepower and makes her a serious threat to enemy cruisers.

Note, however, USS Newport News still carries the same amount of main battery ammunition as the Baltimore-class heavy cruisers. Captains will need to allocate their ammo types carefully and keep an eye out on the ammo count during battle, or they might find themselves out of shells in the middle of a firefight.
{{main|3 inch Mk.33 (76 mm)}}

USS Newport News is in her 1962 state, after modifications to be a fleet flagship. The installation of flagship facilities required removal of most of her 3 inch AA guns, leaving only one dual mount on each side of the bridge. As a result, USS Newport News relies mostly on her secondary 5" guns for air defense. That said, these 3" guns, firing VT-fused HE shells by default, are powerful in their own right, and can be a last resort defense against aircraft and small boats.

=== Pros and cons ===
<!-- ''Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list.
'''Pros:'''

* Well-armored for a cruiser and can take a lot of punishments when angled properly, however still remember you are a heavy cruiser facing battleships and late war battlecruisers.
* Very large crew of 1,799, in the American tech tree is in second place in crew pool size.
* Relatively resistant to small-to-medium caliber crew drain, since she isn't covered in AA mounts.
* Fair mobility at a top speed of 61 km/h spaded, however stock is 52 km/h.
* Formidable firepower, The 9, 8-Inch/55 Caliber Guns can fire at the same rate as most of the "Late War American 6-Inch Cruisers" At a base reload of '''7.8 seconds''' the newcomers to this ship should feel right at home due to the same reload speed as the 6-inch late war Americans cruisers.
* Has access to air search and tracking radars.

'''Cons:'''

* '''Painful stock grind''' due to the terrible default common (SAP) shell, with at best 110mm of pen at 1km range with 4.84KG of tnt. This in turn will make the grinding or rather, any playability of this ship VERY limited until you can research the better round 8-inch Mk.21 APCBC.
* Tends to see battleships more often than her peers (Currently Sitting At A Relatively High BR Of 6.3 RB), but she is similarly powerless against these enemies, Even fully spaded it will struggle to fight against any of the battleships, or late war battlecruisers as her firepower and survivability is lesser than these ships.
* Only two dual-mount 3" guns for AA, one for each side of the ship. Very atypical for a US cruiser, which is normally covered in AA mounts. This will leave you with sub-par at best AA capabilities with the only real factor of having AA is the 5 inch guns.
* Has the same amount of main battery ammunition as the Baltimore-class cruisers (1350 rounds) despite a much higher rate of fire. It is easy to run out of ammunition if not careful and limiting your firing
* No torpedo armaments, like most WW2 American cruisers.
* No access to scout planes.
* The magazine of her second turret is above waterline and can be easily hit and ammo detonated causing the ship to be destroyed fairly easily.
* Both of her fire control rooms are also close to the waterline. If they are both destroyed, the ship will be unable to calculate the lead point

=== Secondary armament ===
Evaluate the secondary armaments and give advice on how to use them. Describe the ammunition available for the secondary armament. Provide recommendations on how to use them and which ammunition to choose. Remember that any anti-air armament, even heavy calibre weapons, belong in the next section. If there is no secondary armament, remove this section.'' -->
== Usage in battles ==
<!-- ''Describe the technique of using this ship, the characteristics of her use in a team and tips on strategy. Abstain from writing an entire guide – don't try to provide a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought. Talk about the most dangerous opponents for this vehicle and provide recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of playing with this vehicle in various modes (AB, RB, SB).'' -->
Your main goal as a battleship (dreadnaught) in Realistic battles that also include "Naval EC" is to fight and control the battlefield with your high-caliber shells, mainly targeting HEAVY CRUSIERS and BATTLESHIPS, due to lacking any HE shells.. It is not advisable to shoot at light cruisers due to your high pen AP shells (487mm at 1km), but this does not mean you cannot shoot at them, your effectiveness will go down compare to shooting at Heavy Cruisers and Battleships, but this should not warrant much problems, you will still do MAJOR damage to the interior of the ship with your shells... Stay near allies that can be helpful with taking down enemies larger than Heavy Cruisers... Do not be the main force to push onto the battlefield, your ships is slower compare to the other ships that you will be fighting, and if a fight goes sour you can easily die due to focus firing, while trying to run away...

Stay near friendly ships that can support in the anti-air area, this battleship has VERY poor anti-air defense capabilities and what little AA it does receive are 2x 3-inch guns...... A list of ships to stay near during battles, these ships can support you with volume of different but strong AA support.... There is other ships that can support your ship but with the size and speed of this ship, the ships you need to stay by either need, Long Range AA, or Mass of Shells AA. A good list is below:

* USS Sumner (DD-692)
* USS Phelps (DD-360)
* USS Cleveland (CL-55)
* USS Helena (CL-50)
* USS Northampton (CA-26)
== Usage in battles ==
The Portland is easily one of the worst and most under performing heavy cruisers in War Thunder as of 1.97 "Viking Fury". The combination of 8 inch guns and a huge ship profile with the poor gun accuracy makes this ship perform quite subpar with comparing to other heavy cruisers, with the addition of the extreme repair cost and low rewards in return this ship its a "Last Resort" very late in a match ship...

Due to being a top tier ship at 5.7, all cruisers are a threat to you especially ships such as the Brooklyn and Admiral Graf Spee, which one can whittle down your very low crew amount to a "non-operable" state, and the other one, easily ammo rack you if broadsiding.

=== Pros and Cons ===
'''Pros:'''
* Can Take A Torpedo Hit

*

'''Cons:'''

* Outrageous Repair Cost
* Amour Cannot Withstand Much of Anything.
* Poor Gun Performance
* Huge Profile, Can Easily Be Spotted And Targeted
* Prone to Detonation
* Low Crew Count
== History ==
'''''USS Portland (CL/CA–33)''' was the lead ship of the Portland class of cruiser and the first ship of the United States Navy named after the city of Portland, Maine. Launched in 1932, she completed a number of training and goodwill cruises in the interwar period before seeing extensive service during World War II, beginning with the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942, where she escorted the aircraft carrier Yorktown and picked up survivors from the sunken carrier Lexington. She screened for Yorktown again in the Battle of Midway, picking up her survivors as well. She then supported the carrier Enterprise during the initial phase of the Guadalcanal Campaign later that year, and was torpedoed during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. The torpedo inflicted heavy damage which put her out of action for six months as she was repaired in Sydney, Australia and later San Diego, California.''

''Returning to combat in mid-1943, Portland saw action in many of the major engagements of the Pacific War, conducting shore bombardments in support of campaigns at the Aleutian Islands, Gilbert and Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, and New Guinea. She was involved in the October 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf, engaging Japanese ships in the decisive Battle of Surigao Strait. She then conducted shore bombardments at Lingayen Gulf and Corregidor Island, and in 1945 supported landings during the Battle of Okinawa until the end of the war.''

''Following World War II, Portland accepted the Japanese surrender in the Caroline Islands and then undertook several Operation Magic Carpet cruises to bring U.S. troops home. She was decommissioned in 1946 and scrapped by 1962. In her extensive service she accrued 16 battle stars, making her one of the most decorated ships in the U.S. fleet.''

''Portland'' was the lead ship of the third class of "treaty cruisers" to be constructed by the United States Navy following the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, following the two vessels of the ''Pensacola'' class ordered in 1926 and the six vessels of the ''Northampton'' class ordered in 1927. Ordered for the U.S. Navy in Fiscal Year 1930. ''Portland'' was originally designated as a light cruiser, because of her thin armor, and given the hull classification symbol CL-33. She was reclassified a heavy cruiser, because of her 8-inch guns, with the symbol CA-33 on 1 July 1931, in accordance with the London Naval Treaty.

''Portland'' was designed for a standard displacement of 10,258 long tons (10,423 t), and a full-load displacement of 12,755 long tons (12,960 t). However, ''Portland'' only displaced 9,800 long tons (10,000 t) when completed. In 1943, a light tripod was added forward of the second funnel on the ship, and a prominent fire-control director was installed aft.

Her four Parsons GT geared turbines each drove a propeller shaft using steam provided by eight Yarrow boilers. ''Portland''<nowiki/>'s power plant generated 107,000 shaft horsepower (80,000 kW) and she had a designed maximum speed of 32 knots (59 km/h; 37 mph). The ship reached, however, 32.7 knots (60.6 km/h; 37.6 mph) on sea trials. She rolled badly until fitted with bilge keels. ''Portland'' was designed for a range of 10,000 nautical miles (19,000 km; 12,000 mi) at 15 knots (28 km/h; 17 mph).

The ship was armed with a main battery of nine Mark 9 8"/55 caliber guns arrayed in three triple mounts, a superfiring pair forward and one aft. She was armed with eight 5"/25 caliber guns for anti-aircraft defense, and she also had two QF 3 pounder Hotchkiss saluting guns. In 1945, her anti-aircraft defenses were upgraded, receiving twenty four Bofors 40 mm guns which were arranged in four quad mounts and four twin mounts. ''Portland'' was also upgraded with seventeen Oerlikon 20 mm cannons.

She was originally designed with 1 inch (25 mm) of armor for deck and side protection, but during construction her armor was increased. As completed, the ship was protected with 3.25 inches (83 mm) of belt armor which increased to 5 inches (130 mm) around the magazines. Her armor was between 2 inches (51 mm) and 5.75 inches (146 mm) thick on the transverse bulkheads, while armor on her main deck was 2.5 inches (64 mm) thick. Armor on her barbettes was 1.5 inches (38 mm) thick, armor on her gunhouses was 2.5 inches (64 mm) thick, and armor on her conning tower was 1.25 inches (32 mm) thick.

Additionally, the ''Portland''-class cruisers were designed with space to be outfitted as fleet flagships, with accommodations for an Admiral and his staff to operate. The class also featured two aircraft catapult amidships, and she could carry four aircraft which were stored in a hangar. Her total crew complement varied, with a regular designed crew complement of 848, a wartime complement of 952, and a complement 1,229 when the cruiser was operating as a fleet flagship.

''Portland'' was laid down by Bethlehem Steel at its Quincy Shipyard on 17 February 1930. The machinery was provided by the builders. ''Portland'' was launched on 21 May 1932 and commissioned on 23 February 1933. She was the first ship named for the city of Portland, Maine, and sponsored by the daughter of Mayor Ralph D. Brooks of Portland, and with Captain Herbert F. Leary as her first commander. Her sailors would later nickname her "Sweet Pea."
