The '''M247 Sergeant York Division Air Defense (DIVAD)''' was a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun developed by Ford Aerospace in the late 1970s. A new turret with twin 40 mm M266 Bofors autocannons guided by radar has been fitted, using the chassis of the [[M48 Patton (Family)|M48 Patton main battle tank]]. The vehicle bears the name of the well-known World War I soldier, Sergeant Alvin York. Although numerous off-the-shelf technologies were used to facilitate quick and inexpensive development, several technical issues and significant cost overruns led to the project's cancellation in 1985. A total of just 50 units were manufactured.

Introduced in [[Update 1.81 "The Valkyries"]], the M247 Sergeant York DIVAD is an extremely capable vehicle for the anti-aircraft role. Armed with proximity-fused 40 mm ammunition, this vehicle is capable of shredding any aircraft within a 2.0 km radius. Semi-armour-piercing rounds are also available, but they are only effective against lightly armoured targets. Players can go with teammates while keeping the skies clear, engaging enemy aircraft long before they can drop their bombs on teammates.
The M48A1 has a max engine power of 810 hp, while the {{PAGENAME}}'s engine power is 750 hp. For a vehicle this heavy, it has fairly good mobility. When spaded, it can comfortably hit a top speed of 45 km/h on flat terrain, while in cross-country you will have a top speed of around 25 km/h. While going backwards, the top speed is somewhat less impressive: about -12 km/h.
The M247 ''Sgt. York'' is a very deadly SPAA, The M247 is deadly to some lightly armoured vehicles but even deadlier to Aircraft. When using the M247 you can easily shred some lightly armoured vehicles like the [[Leopard 1]]. Where the speciality of the M247 is its Proximity fused 40 mm rounds. They will shred any aircraft within a 2.0 km radius. You can play the vehicle mostly in 2 ways. You can push and try defending caps from the enemies and keeping the skies clear, or stay back behind cover and keep the skies clear for your allies while using your AP rounds to fend off enemy vehicles.

Generally, enemy tanks should be avoided, your rounds don't have the penetration to deal with all but the lightest of targets. Avoid confrontations if possible and only engage targets that you have a chance of penetrating such as SPAA or light tanks. They can be easily dealt with from the side and the front in some cases. If confrontations become unavoidable pop smoke to try and escape, you cannot deal with anything more armoured than a light tank.

;Ammunition

The recommended ammunition belts:

* M822 for Anti-Air
* M811 Fuze Delay for Anti-Tank

M822 is exclusively proximity fuze rounds, making it extremely potent against air threats, not requiring a direct hit to get a kill. Unfortunately, the low penetration of the round makes it unable to perform Anti-Tank duties. If you expect to meet enemy armour switch to the M811 belt, the extra penetration of the rounds allows it to be able to take care of light tanks and SPAA, but struggles against more heavily armoured opponents.

=== Pros and cons ===
<!-- ''Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list.
'''Pros:'''

* Has access to 12 smoke grenades
* The hull has adequate protection against most light tank calibre rounds
* Can retract and extend both search and tracking radars to reduce the silhouette
* Twin stabilized 40 mm cannons have a high rate of fire
* Large ammunition count ensures that you will have plenty to fire throughout a match
* Potent proximity ammunition for anti-aircraft use
* The HE-VT belt has no tracers making it near impossible for enemy aircraft to see and dodge the incoming shells
* Radar allows for a high range of detection and very accurate tracking, with a 10 km tracking and 40 km detection range
* Has access to night vision devices, a laser rangefinder, commander sights, and commander fire control

'''Cons:'''

* Weak survivability
** Vulnerable to enemy armour, artillery strikes and air attacks
** The turret armour is only 5 mm thick, which is easy to penetrate even for rifle-calibre MGs
** Only three crew members
* Radar is tall and can expose your position
* The M247 is sluggish especially when stock, and will usually not be able to keep up with MBTs
* The high rate of fire can deplete the ammo quickly without proper trigger discipline
** 5-minute long restock time on a capture point after depleting ammo
* Completely lacks any armour-piercing rounds in any belt, giving it very poor defensive capabilities against ground vehicles, even lightly-armoured ones
* The gunner sight optics only has one zoom setting (12.0x with a sight FOV of 6) meaning that you may struggle to engage tanks and lock/eliminate aircraft
* No IRST mode and cannot lock onto targets when the radar is off

== History ==
<!--''Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ground vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/ History" (example: <nowiki>https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History</nowiki>) and add a link to it here using the <code>main</code> template.
The M247 "Sergeant York" was designed in the late 1970's as a purpose-built SPAAG. It was designed to fight alongside the [[M1 Abrams]] and [[M3 Bradley|M2/M3 Bradley]], in order to provide cover against aircraft. There were other SPAA vehicles in service at the time; these were the [[M163|M163 Vulcan]] and the MIM-72/M48 Chaparral. The former being a 20 mm rotary cannon mounted on an armoured personnel carrier, and the latter being a heavily modified armoured personnel carrier chassis with a surface-to-air missile launcher. Neither of those two vehicles were designed as SPAA's, and so, did not have the necessary performance to be adequate at their job. The M247 was designed as a replacement for both of the previous vehicles.

Designs from a multitude of companies were entered into the competition. Only two were selected for testing: the Ford XM-247 with twin Bofors 40 mm cannons and the General Dynamics XM-246 with twin Oerlikon 35 mm cannons. The two prototypes were tested, and the XM-247 was selected as the winner, although the XM-246 had outscored it in all the shooting tests. The M247, as it was soon designated, ran into many problems. The radar was extremely deficient; it had a hard time distinguishing trees from planes, and if the guns were pointed too high, they would get in the radar's way and confuse it even more. In addition, it took too long for the radar to pick up a target and for the guns to actually take aim. In addition, the turret traverse speed was much too slow, the vehicle it's self was too sluggish to keep up the M1s and M2s, and it was unreliable in cold weather. Eventually, the program was cancelled after more testing, where it was proven the system could not even shoot down stationary drones. There was still a need for an anti-aircraft vehicle that could keep up with modern vehicles, so Oerlikon Canada created the [[ADATS (M113)|ADATS]] anti-aircraft missile system. This was not as successful as hoped, and was only accepted into Canadian service. The void was eventually filled by the M6 Linebacker, an M2 Bradley with Stinger missiles instead of TOW missiles. The Linebacker was capable of keeping up with modern armoured forces, which was the reason for its acceptance, even though the Stingers were not as effective as the ADATS missiles<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M247_Sergeant_York</ref>.
The '''{{Specs|name}}''' is a license-built version of the [[AH-64D]] by Fuji Heavy Industries to improve the Japanese anti-tank helicopter capabilities, and a cost-efficient alternative over a domestic attack helicopter development program. With a promised future for 62 Japanese Apaches, the slow and long-term purchase of 2 helicopters a year raised the price and the order was later cut down to a total of 12 AH-64DJPs. The remaining Japanese Apaches later received upgrade kits to serve them longer in service but with the MoD deciding in 2022 that the future isn't for helicopters, the AH-64D's together with the [[AH-1S]] and OH-1 will soon be replaced by unmanned drones instead.

It was introduced in [[Update "Starfighters"]]. It is similar to the American version, but it does not have AMASE or APKWS missiles. The main advantage of the Apache is its AGM-114K Hellfire II, which can destroy tanks from a long distance. The best way to use the missiles is to scan the ground with radar and thermal vision and launch missiles every five seconds or more once targets are acquired. This way, it can hit multiple targets or make sure they are destroyed and compensate for the long flight time. The AH-64DJP is equipped with four ATAS missiles for self-defense, which can shoot down enemy aircraft. It also has a 30 mm cannon with a computerized system that can automatically track and lead targets in the air or on the ground, and fire at them with precision.
<!-- ''Describe how the helicopter behaves in the air. Speed, manoeuvrability, acceleration and allowable loads - these are the most important characteristics of the vehicle.'' -->
The AH-64DJP sports great manoeuvrability, incredible acceleration, and overall provides great speed of up to 320 km/h in arcade and 295 km/h in realistic and simulator game modes. As fast as the [[AH-64D|United States Army, AH-64D Longbow]] and slower than the [[AH_Mk.1|British Army, AH Mk.1]] variants of the Apache, the AH-64DJP is still able to perform manoeuvres other helicopters can only dream about, from barrel rolls, flips to loops which allow it to evade enemy missiles with ease.
* '''Flares/Chaff''' - Up to 30 countermeasures can be installed.
* '''AIM-92 Stinger''' - AIM-92 Stingers and Infrared Counter Measures.

When unlocked, countermeasures are not installed - this requires the Flares/Chaff module (tier I) to be researched and installed, this provides up to 30 countermeasures. The last module called AIM-92 (tier III) allows for the installation of a maximum of four AIM-92 Stinger missiles, which two are mounted on each wing tip, 30 countermeasures & IRCM module. Flares launch in a back left pattern, keep that in mind when flaring missiles or turning away from the combat area whilst pre-flaring.

Important note: unlike the American and British brothers, the AH-64DJP lacks a MAW (missile approach warning) system. This means that the AH-64JDP player should keep an extra eye on SPAAs and incoming SAMs by himself, as without MAW missiles must be spotted and countermeasures deployed manually.

The AH-64DJP, like most of its siblings, has a fully digital RWR covering the full radar band spectrum. This means it will be able to see any (turned on) radar in the lobby with corresponding abbreviation.

== Usage in battles ==
<!-- ''Describe the tactics of playing in a helicopter, the features of using the helicopter in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).'' -->

'''Overview:'''

The AH-64DJP is very similar to the AH-64D Apache. The only difference is the lack of an ability to carry an advanced MAW (a system that alerts the pilot to incoming missiles, Missile Alert Warning). The Apache is an excellent helicopter for attacking ground targets, and can also hold its own against many enemy aircraft. Through adequate use of cover, teamwork, and game sense, the Apache can easily dismantle enemy teams. An Apache pilot must understand all of the tools at their disposal.

The Apache has an arsenal of weapons. The most effective anti-tank weapon in the Apache's arsenal is the AGM-114 Hellfire, which uses a top attack trajectory to destroy ground vehicles. There is functionally very little difference between the AGM-114B and K variants, used on early and late Apaches respectively.

'''Staying Alive:'''

Flying the Apache effectively can be more difficult than most players would imagine, processing information from optical sights, radar displays, and the radar warning receiver all at once can lead to information overload. If distracted by irrelevant information, a pilot can quickly lose situational awareness. Being successful in the Apache requires situational awareness above all else. Due to the fragility of the helicopter, any blindspot can lead to a quick and sudden death. Additionally, the mobility of the Apache is adequate but not impressive, so evasive manoeuvres are not always effective.

Using cover is a very important part of staying alive in the Apache. Always stay behind a hill or building in ground battles. When exposing yourself in order to fire on the enemy, be mindful to not gain too much altitude.

The biggest improvement of the later Apache variants is the ability to mount the Longbow radar system. This system, if used properly, will help maintain situational awareness.

Additionally, it is important to know when to use flares. Flares are extremely effective against heat-seeking missiles, but useless against any other missiles. It is the responsibility of the Apache pilot to recognize the threat and decide whether to use flares or not. For Apaches with MAW (missile approach warning), there is an option for flares to be dispensed automatically.

'''Using the Longbow Radar:'''

The radar of the Apache should be used as a secondary tool when engaging ground targets. The radar is not effective in obtaining target lock for ground vehicles. The AGM-114L radar guided Hellfire is not in the game, so guidance of Hellfires should be done by using the FLIR thermal imaging camera to lase targets. However, the radar is still useful in detecting enemy aircraft. By using the multi-function menu to switch radar mode, the radar will begin to search for air rather than ground targets. Keeping track of enemy aircraft is vital to survival in the Apache, as any plane can make quick work of the Apache if the helicopter is unprepared.

'''Air-to-Air (Stinger and Gun):'''

The Apache is surprisingly potent in air-to-air combat. Engagements should be conducted primarily through the use of the Stinger missile. The Stinger is a simple but effective air-to-air missile. It has an excellent seeker head and can obtain all aspect lock on almost any air target within 3-5 km (even propeller aircraft with a low heat signature). However, the Stinger can be easily fooled by flares or outmanoeuvred by a fast enemy aircraft. The best way to use the Stinger against enemy aircraft is when they are heading directly towards you. If fired at the right second, most enemies will struggle to dodge a Stinger.

If the enemy gets close, the 30 mm autocannon can be extremely effective. The gun will automatically aim with optical lock, so Apache pilots can aim accurately while taking evasive manoeuvres.

'''Close Range Air-to-Ground (Gun and Rockets):'''

At close range, the Apache has excellent offensive capability. The 30 mm autocannon is incredibly accurate even at surprisingly far distances. This cannon uses a High Explosive Dual Purpose round that can engage lightly armoured targets. Rocket pods can also be used, with the CCIP computer helping maintain accuracy even at further distances. Be careful when trying to use the Hellfire missile at close range. It can do a direct attack at closer ranges (rather than its usual top attack) but if fired at an odd angle, it may not have time to manoeuvre onto the target if fired at closer ranges.

The problem with trying to engage at close range is that doing so will put the Apache in huge amounts of danger. Enemy tanks will be able to quickly destroy the Apache with their main guns or anti-aircraft machine guns.

[[File:HellfireTrajectory.png|thumb]]
'''Long Range Air-to-Ground (Hellfire): '''

At longer ranges, the Hellfire missile can be used to full effect. The Hellfire will guide on its target as shown in the attached diagram. This is known as top attack. Being that it takes this path to the enemy target, the Hellfire can take upward of 30 seconds to reach its target at longer ranges. Do not fire at enemies that are about to move to cover, and make sure to fire multiple missiles at once in order to deal maximum damage. Because the Hellfire is laser guided, multiple missiles can be fired at once. They should be fired at intervals of 5-10 seconds, where between missiles the Apache can switch to a new ground target. This will allow for the quick destruction of multiple enemies. This tactic can be incredibly effective. Although the time to target for the most recently fired Hellfire is available on the HUD, pilots will have to keep track of all the missiles they have fired by memory and quick calculations.
[[File:HellfireSequenceDemonstration.mp4|left]]

Combatting enemy anti-aircraft vehicles can be a challenge. Always remain in cover and move unpredictably in combat. Use the radar warning receiver to obtain the general direction of enemy AA, and then attack with a Hellfire. An effective strategy is to fire a Hellfire, break optical lock to gain cover and avoid counterfire, and then pop back up and get lock again several seconds before the Hellfire hits. This strategy if applied correctly will result in a hit, as the Hellfire is smart enough to begin following the laser designator again once the Apache re-obtains its lock.

The AH-64D was selected by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) in 2001, with a requirement for about 50 helicopters. 50 were ordered, and they were built by the Japanese Fuji Heavy Industries as the '''AH-64DJP''' (JP standing for Japan). The first AH-64DJP was delivered in 2006, but the order was cancelled after the delivery of only 13 helicopters. The AH-64DJP has the possibility of equipping AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missiles (AAMs).

In 2017, it was announced that the AH-64DJP helicopters were to have their targeting systems upgraded by the American Lockheed Martin defense firm. According to a press briefing from April 26 of 2017, the upgrade was to the Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M‑TADS/PNVS). The M-TADS is the laser designator that allows the targeting of the AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, while the PNVS assists with safe flight in day, night, and adverse weather missions. The contract was for the delivery of 14 Modernized Day Sensor Assembly (M-DSA) laser designator kits. The M-DSA increases the reliability of the laser designator and also increases the precision of the system. Additionally, Lockheed Martin's Apache sustainment team was to provide performance-based logistics support to the JGSDF under a separate three-year contract. Japan was the first Apache operator to receive the M-DSA upgrade.

The JGSDF operated one squadron of ten AH-64DJP helicopters, with the other three acting as training helicopters. One AH-64DJP was destroyed in a crash in February 2018, resulting in the deaths of both crew members; this left a total of 12 AH-64DJP helicopters.

In late 2022, the Japanese Ministry of Defence in its plans of "Elimination of obsolete equipment" decided to largely replace its fleet of attack and observation helicopters with drone craft and loitering munitions. Part of this list includes the AH-64D. Officially resulting in its end of service by 2027.
Following the end of the Second Lebanon War in 2006, where Merkavas were frequently subjected to attacks from anti-tank weapons, a decision was made to equip the tanks with the "Trophy" active protection system developed by Rafael. The system was first presented to the public in 2005 at the LIC-2005 international exhibition in Tel Aviv. It includes a radar that detects and identifies incoming projectiles aimed at the tank. Upon receiving a signal from the radar, launch units are activated, firing countermeasures to intercept and destroy the warhead at maximum distance from the tank. [[Merkava Mk.4B|Merkava Mk.4]]s equipped with this system, designated '''Merkava Mk.4M''' (''Me'il Ruach'', מעיל רוח; lit. "Windbreaker"), were adopted for service in the early 2010s and have already participated in several regional conflicts.

Introduced in [[Update "Wind of Change"]], the Merkava Mk.4M is the ultimate subvariant of the Merkava Mk.4. Players can lead assaults into modern battlefields without fear of ATGMs from both ground vehicles and helicopters, thanks to the Trophy APS. The Merkava Mk.4M is a truly modern main battle tank designed for even the most intense conflict, providing the finest protection and firepower to confront any adversary. Players should bear in mind, however, that the Trophy APS does not give unlimited protection, and hence the tank should not stay out in the open for long during combat.
Is the level of armour protection sufficient, is the placement of modules helpful for survival in combat? If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.'' -->
The Merkava Mk.4M's armour is mainly composed of NERA, which is very effective against chemical munitions. Most HEAT rounds and ATGMs will fail to penetrate the frontal arc of the tank. Notable chemical munitions that can penetrate the front reliably are modern helicopter-mounted ATGMs such as the Hellfire and the 9M133 ATGM on the BMP-2M.

However, the armour does not perform well against kinetic munitions and modern APFSDS sabot rounds will easily go through the hull and turret. This is somewhat alleviated by the good crew placement in the tank, which allows the crew to survive some shots that other contemporary MBTs would not.

The Trophy APS is excellent at neutralizing ATGMs and projectiles that travel under 1,000 m/s which greatly enhances the Merkava's survivability. The addition of a Laser Warning System allows players to also be aware of other laser-guided munitions such as GBUs that the APS cannot intercept, giving the player time to react accordingly.
Due to the relatively small size of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) compared to some of its potential opponents, Israel's military doctrine is ever focused on protecting its highly-trained personnel from harm during combat. This is typically achieved by fielding advanced technology designed to reduce casualties. Nowhere is this seen more clearly than in the design of the Merkava tank. Beyond its rare configuration, which places the engine at the front to soak up penetrating rounds, as well as the "Hairs of Shulamit" passive protective chains around the rear of the tank's turret, in the early 2000s Israel began simultaneous development of two Active Protection Systems (APS) designed to intercept and destroy incoming anti-tank weaponry.

One of these two systems is called "Me'il Ruach" (Windbreaker Jacket, or simply Windbreaker), which was developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The Windbreaker system contains a high-precision radar and four flat-panel antennas, designed to detect incoming projectiles such as HEAT rounds, ATGMs, RPGs, and any other "slow" chemical warheads. Once an incoming projectile is detected, the system quickly calculates its exact flight trajectory and determines the optimum timing for interception. Two launchers on either side of the turret can quickly rotate in any direction to fire a pack of Explosively-Formed Projectiles (EFP) at the warhead and detonate it before it can hit the tank. This is effectively a very tight shotgun blast of tiny pellets that triggers the warhead by directly hitting it. If the system determines that the enemy projectile will not hit the tank, it does not fire the pellets at all.

The extreme accuracy of the radar, the precise trajectory calculation and the tight cone of pellets not only increase the chance of detonating the warhead to approximately 90-95% (100% in operational history), but also significantly reduce the risk to any friendly infantry who may be near the tank when the system fires. This was set as a prerequisite before development ever began. Furthermore, the system alerts the tank crew to the direction the attack came from, allowing them to return fire quickly and effectively.

The Windbreaker system was first installed onto a platoon of operational [[Merkava Mk.4B|Merkava Mk.4 tanks]] in 2009. The upgraded model was renamed '''Merkava Mk.4M''', with the M being the first letter in the system's Hebrew name ("Me'il Ruach"). The IDF's 401st Armored Regiment was the first to be fully equipped with Merkava Mk.4Ms in 2012. Today, all new Israeli-produced tanks are Merkava Mk.4Ms; all Merkava Mk.4 tanks in service in the IDF have been upgraded to Merkava Mk.4M standards; and the Windbreaker system is also known to feature on some older [[Merkava_Mk.3D_(USA)|Merkava Mk.3D models]].

Windbreaker became the first fully-operational hard-kill APS in any Western-aligned army, and to this day is the only mass-produced system of this type outside of Russia and China. It was first tested in battle in 2011, when it intercepted an RPG fired by Hamas combatants at a Merkava Mk.4M on the border of the Gaza Strip. During Operation Protective Edge in 2014, Windbreaker systems reportedly intercepted a total of 15 enemy warheads, including Metis, Konkurs and Kornet ATGMs. As of 2023, the system has maintained a 100% operational success rate in combat.

Windbreaker's development quickly drew the attention of the United States Army, which first purchased a light version of the system for protecting its Oshkosh M-ATVs. In the United States military, the system is named "Trophy". In 2017, the U.S. Army ordered 100 heavy-model Trophy units for installation on [[M1A2 Abrams]] tanks, enough to outfit an entire regiment. In 2019 the Army ordered enough systems to outfit three additional regiments. Germany was also an early adopter of the Trophy system, installing it into its state-of-the-art Leopard 2A7A1. Reportedly, the British army is currently planning on installing the Trophy system into its future Challenger 3 tank, though trials are proceeding concurrently for other APS systems.
The ASRAD-R (Advanced Short Range Air Defence System - RBS) is a short range air defence system designed between Rheinmetall and Saab Bofors Dynamics for use in different vehicles. This configuration is mounted in the American M113 APC. The system can use a 3D AESA air search radar with a range of up to 20 km or an infrared search and track (IRST) system, depending on the needs of the customer. Compared to older air defence systems developed in Sweden, the ASRAD uses an unmanned launcher high above the rest of the vehicle, which allows the rest of the hull to stay hidden or buried in defensive positions. The missile employed by the launcher is the RBS-70 (Bolide) that uses a laser beam guidance system. The missile is also designed to be capable of intercepting cruise missiles. Each battery of ASRAD-R systems also equips 4 RBS 70 MANPADS launchers.

Introduced in [[Update "Hot Tracks"]], the ASRAD-R features a good number of improvements over the [[Lvrbv 701]]. The launcher array is now unmanned and located higher above the ground, which allows for the hull to remain in cover while still being effective in all directions thanks to the increased horizontal traverse angles. With access to 8 long-range supersonic missiles, the ASRAD-R proves to be quite deadly, especially against enemy helicopters. Compared to many air defence systems, the ASRAD-R comes with the benefit of having multipurpose missiles: because they are laser beam guided, and they have HEAT warheads, they can be used with some success against enemy ground units, its penetration values are not the greatest, but are enough to go trough the thin armour found in light tanks, APCs, IFVs and other lightly armoured targets, however it would struggle to go trough the thicker armour of MBTs, even from the sides.

If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.'' -->
The ASRAD-R uses the chassis of M113 armored personnel carrier. With the whole chassis made up of the fragile Aluminium alloy 5083, any heavy machine gun round that is larger than 7.62 mm can cut through its hull at ease. The ASRAD-R is also very vulnerable to overpressure damage and airstrikes. The crew is fairly spread out which usually helps it survive from a single kinetic shot. However, the engine and transmission are placed in front, thus a frontal shot will likely disable its mobility and bring more shots on the ASRAD-R. A successful penetration on the right side of the hull usually detonates the ammo and blows the whole crew up. The unmanned turret contains several critical modules of the fire control system, and the exposed ammo is very volatile to overpressure damage. Thankfully, the ASRAD-R has 8 rounds of smoke grenades which might save your life from the enemy ATGM on occasion.
As a tracked vehicle, the ASRAD-R adjusts to narrow and rugged terrains and has decent flexibility to evade and take cover while moving. In spite of that, the average speed of ASRAD-R is around 30-40 km/h, and its acceleration and climbing ability aren't so impressive compared to its firepower.
The ASRAD-R was developed by Rheinmetall and SAAB Bofors Dynamic, the system is a modular Short Range Air Defence System that can be adapted into several platforms, several countries have presented interest in this system, like Greece, Sweden, Germany and Finland.

The system has proven very successful thanks to it's modular design, since it allows customers to integrate advanced air defence capabilities for ground forces into old vehicles, like the M113 APC and the German "Wiesel". Mounted in these two platforms and also in the Finish ItO 2005. The ASRAD-R can use different weapon systems, for instance, the Swedish variant uses the RBS-70 (Bolide) while the Greek Army uses the Stinger missile in what's called the ASRAD-HELLAS.

During deployment ASRAD-R units consists of 4 batteries as the lowest organization unit, and they also equip 4 x RBS 70 MANPADS launchers for usage by the rest of the crew when dismounted or by infantry around the batteries. The vehicle can use an AESA 3D search radar or an IRST (Infrared Search and Track) system depending on the customer's demand.

The Swedish version of the ASRAD-R is mounted in the M113 APC and uses the already mentioned RBS-70 Bolide missile. This system uses the SAAB Microwave Systems HARD 3D search radar with a range of up to 20KM operating in the X band. This radar has 3 modes, the MTI (moving target indicator) mode for fixed-wing targets, helicopter mode for helicopter detection and analysis and a non-MTI mode for increased sensitivity and detection of tangential targets. The Bolide missile has a maximum range of 8KM and an altitude coverage of 5000M, with a laser beam guidance system, that uses automatic tracking based on the radar lock to intercept the target.

A naval version of the ASRAD-R was announced in 2007 by Rheinmetall and SAAB Bofors Dynamic, the naval variant includes 4 x RBS-70 mounted on a pedestal with upgraded sensors and subsystems against helicopters and fixed wing aircrafts but specially against high speed cruise missile, it also includes a CCD TV eyesafe laser rangefinder.
== Description ==
<!-- ''In the description, the first part should be about the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle, as well as its key features. In the second part, tell the reader about the ground vehicle in the game. Insert a screenshot of the vehicle, so that if the novice player does not remember the vehicle by name, he will immediately understand what kind of vehicle the article is talking about.'' -->
The ASRAD-R (Advanced Short Range Air Defence System - RBS) is a short range air defence system designed between Rheinmetall and Saab Bofors Dynamics for use in different vehicles.

=== Survivability and armour ===
{{Specs-Tank-Armour}}
<!-- ''Describe armour protection. Note the most well protected and key weak areas. Appreciate the layout of modules as well as the number and location of crew members. Is the level of armour protection sufficient, is the placement of modules helpful for survival in combat? If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.'' -->
<!-- ''Write about the mobility of the ground vehicle. Estimate the specific power and manoeuvrability, as well as the maximum speed forwards and backwards.'' -->
== Description ==

== General info ==
=== Survivability and armour ===
{{Specs-Tank-Armour}}
In spite of that, the average speed of ASRAD-R is around 30-40 km/h, and its acceleration and climbing ability aren't so impressive compared to its firepower.

'''Pros:'''

* Horizontal traverse of 360° allows for more flexibility compared to the [[Lvrbv 701]]
* BOLIDE missiles with greater range (9 km) and velocity (700 m/s) are a tier II modification
* Access to 1st generation thermals and high magnification in the gunner sight
* Can fire 4 missiles before reloading
* Opto-electronic tracker for locking hostile aircraft without triggering LWS

'''Cons:'''

* Limited anti-ground capabilities due to poor gun depression of -5° and low penetration of 200 mm
* Subpar mobility and armour protection as a result of using the M113 chassis
* High profile and thus easy to spot, especially when the radar is active
* Limited elevation (+35°) causes trouble when fighting
* Relies on thermal sight to find the hostile aircraft because the opto-electronic tracker can't detect the target in the third-person view
