<!-- Describe how the aircraft behaves in the air. Speed, manoeuvrability, acceleration and allowable loads - these are the most important characteristics of the vehicle. -->
Speed and acceleration are both decent. However, its manoeuvrability is a big weak spot. When turning, you can expect a relatively slow turn time, and the wings tend to rip off of in hard banking manoeuvres.
Usage in battles
<!-- Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB). -->
The Do 17 Z-7 is the first twin-engine heavy fighter that is unlocked in a long line of German "Zerstörer" (lit. "Destroyer", used to refer to heavy fighters) aircraft. Like all of its successors, the Do 17 Z-7 is a full-bred Boom & Zoom fighter, through and through. This means the Do 17 should, under any circumstances always strive to maintain an altitude advantage over enemy aircraft. Utilise the potential energy to dive on them and make a high speed pass while firing, then quickly make an escape. There is however, a couple of caveats for the Do 17 Z-7 that is worth considering when flying it.

For starters, its energy retention and climb rate are mediocre at best. Immediately making a second pass will generally be a bad idea, as it will attract a lot planes with ample opportunity to return fire. Instead, utilise the high air speed from the dive to gain as much horizontal distance from enemy planes as possible before starting to climb. Also, remember to never commit to chasing after a specific plane since the plane will lose too much speed and energy in doing so. Pick out a target from high altitude, roll over and dive down in a vertical position as soon as possible, in order to maximize the altitude-speed trade off. When at first possible moment get a gun solution on the target, and once the solution is lost, level the plane out and speed away at high speed, potentially destroying other players that may cross the path along the way with the same principle.

The Do 17 Z-7's primary source of damage comes from its single 20 mm MG 151 cannon. While not spitting as much lead downrange as the Bf 110's dual MG FF/M's do, it makes up for it by having access to the MG 151's Air targets belt, which contains a lot more Minengeschoß. They are highly effective against unarmoured planes, which the Do 17 Z-7 will regularly face. While the MG 17s also can do some damage to biplanes, any aware fighter pilot will be able to move away from the gun sight and end up on the Do 17 Z-7's tail, if solely using the machine guns. The MG 151 and 17s are clustered in the nose, however, and combined can ravage lightly armoured ground formations. They must never be underestimated as an alternative to the Do 17 Z-7's bombs.

The round nose is also heavily armored. If you notice a traditionally Boom & Zoom fighter, such as the Fw 190, gearing up to make a run on your rear, turn around horizontally while it is still relatively far away. (The Do 17 Z-7's horizontal turn rate is dangerously pitiful; take advantage of distance when making this maneuver.) An inexperienced Boomer & Zoomer will not recognize what you are trying to do, will make a readjustment to meet you at your new heading, and continue charging you. Your adversary will have made a grave mistake by doing so - as soon as your guns are within effective range, open fire. The clustering of your offensive armament in the nose will devastate the front section of the enemy plane, and all they might possibly have to show for it will be rounds mostly ricocheting off of your nose. Exercise caution in baiting Boom & Zoom fighters with wing-mounted armaments, however; your own wings will take the brunt of their fire rather than your armored nose.

Counter-tactics
The best way to deal with this plane is to fly fast and aim for the engines. Don't tail the plane because then the gunners will have an easy target. If tailing the plane, dip down a little bit, as the dorsal gunner won't be able to hit the plane this way and the ventral gunner will be pointed down too much to do anything about it. At this battle rating, there are a lot of newer players, who most likely haven't put Crew XP into the gunners vitality. If the gunners are taken out, then the plane is a flying duck.

Avoid a head-on at all cost - it has nose armour and a 20 mm cannon which will shred any plane to bits. This plane cannot turn very well, if it is pursuing you, simply turn sharply to one direction. It is best to aim for the engines and not the cockpit. The cockpit glass has 58 mm sloped armour; it would be difficult for bullets to go through and hit the crew. It is highly recommended to also attack the wings when flying a plane with cannons: the wings are large, easy targets and the Do 17 Z-7, already not the most nimble plane, will not get very far with much control surface damage.
Pros and cons
<!-- Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective". -->

Pros:

* Exclusively nose-mounted armament, resulting in very little need for convergence.
* Can take a lot of machine gun fire before going down.
* Armed with an 20 mm MG 151, capable of using the air targets belt, giving the plane absolutely devastating firepower.
* 2 x rear gunners for covering both above and below the aircraft.
* Defensive armament is quite effective, high fire rate combined with deadly AP-T belts.
* Easy to put out a fire by diving.
* Can be mistaken at a distance for its bomber counterpart, allowing enemies to think they can engage you head-on.

Cons:

* Mediocre climb rate at best when upgraded.
* Slow even when upgraded (Hurricanes will be able to outrun it in level flight).
* Horrible roll rate.
* Overall poor handling characteristics.
* Lousy energy retention.
* Best performs as a Boom & Zoom aircraft, although its poor flight characteristics makes it inefficient at it.
* Defensive armament has poor coverage to fend of attacking enemies.
* Engine overheats, important to watch the engines temp and adjust when needed.

History
The Do 17 Z-7 was a model of the Do 17Z, the main variant of the Dornier Do 17. The Dornier 17, dubbed the "flying pencil", was designed in the early 1930s and was mainly used against Poland, England, France and the Netherlands. In total there were 2,139 built. Other countries that used the Do 17 were Yugoslavia, Finland, and Spain. Only a few Do 17s remain today, none of which are of the Z-7 model.

The primary model, the Z-2, was designed as a "Schnellbomber" ("fast bomber"), intended as a light bomber able to outrun enemy fighters. Its offensive armament was sparse, consisting of only two MG 15 machine guns mounted in a glass nose. The Z-7, however, was built as a night fighter, and as such was up-armed with MG 17s. The glass nose that characterized earlier models of the Do 17 was replaced with metal armor. The clustered three-machine gun, single-cannon configuration the Z-7 boasted was known as "Kauz I" ("screech owl").

Do 17 production ended in 1940, supplanted by the Ju 88 and succeeded by the similar, but more powerful, Do 217.

While the MG 17s also can do some damage to biplanes, any aware fighter pilot will be able to move away from the gun sight and end up on the Do 17's tail, if solely using the machine guns.

An inexperienced Boomer & Zoomer will not recognize what you are trying to do, will make a readjustment to meet you at your new heading, and continue charging you.

<!-- Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics.

* Horrible roll rate.
* Overall poor handling characteristics.
* Lousy energy retention.
* Best performs as a Boom & Zoom aircraft, although its poor flight characteristics makes it inefficient at it.
* Defensive armament has poor coverage to fend of attacking enemies.
* Engine overheats, important to watch the engines temp and adjust when needed.

While the MG 17s also can do some damage to biplanes, any aware fighter pilot will be able to move away from the gun sight and end up on the Do 17's tail, if solely using the machine guns.

An inexperienced Boomer & Zoomer will not recognize what you are trying to do, will make a readjustment to meet you at your new heading, and continue charging you. Your adversary will have made a grave mistake by doing so - as soon as your guns are within effective range, open fire. The clustering of your offensive armament in the nose will devastate the front section of the enemy plane, and all they might possibly have to show for it will be rounds mostly ricocheting off of your nose. Exercise caution in baiting Boom & Zoom fighters with wing-mounted armaments, however; your wings will take the brunt of their fire rather than your armored nose.

* Horrible roll rate.
* Overall poor handling characteristics.
* Lousy energy retention.
* Best performs as a Boom & Zoom aircraft, although its poor flight characteristics makes it inefficient at it.
* Defensive armament has poor coverage to fend of attacking enemies.
* Engine overheats, important to watch the engines temp and adjust when needed.

If the appearance of your favourite vehicle has started to bore you, and the in-game camouflages available for it aren’t quite what you want, the best solution is to create a unique appearance for your vehicle with a user camouflage.
You can always find interesting camouflages on the War Thunder LIVE portal or create your own.
User camouflage is set locally, i.e. only the player can see it. For others, your tank or aircraft will remain in the same camouflage that was selected in the “Appearance” menu as the basis for the user camouflage.

__TOC__

Setting user camouflage
Select the ground vehicle or aircraft you want to update the camouflage on, open the “Appearance” menu or click on the button to create an example camouflage.

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="260px">
File:CustomSkins CreateSampleFiles Wiki.jpg ‎
</gallery>
After that, go to the folder where the War Thunder client is installed and do the following:

#Go to the following path: War Thunder → UserSkins → *previously obtained folder name* - for example, template_ussr_t_10m. (macOS users using the standalone launcher must right-click the launcher in Finder, select 'Show Package Contents', then enter the 'Contents' folder. Inside is the War Thunder app itself. 'Show Package Contents' there, then go to Contents → Resources → game → UserSkins → *previously obtained folder name*.)
#If you want to set a camouflage from the War Thunder LIVE portal, just delete the entire contents of the folder, then download the unique camouflage you like from live.warthunder.com and copy the contents of the archive to the folder. This will be 2-3 files in the DDS or TGA file formats and also configuration file “name_of_the_vehicle.blk”.
#If you want to create your own camouflage, then start editing the simple graphical files in the TGA format that are already in the folder. By default a texture will be created for ground vehicles which will be applied to all elements of the vehicle.

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="230px">
File:CustomSkins MovingCustomSkins Wiki.PNG ‎
</gallery>

Return to the client and update the list of available camouflages by pressing the corresponding button.

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="260px">
File:CustomSkins UpdateSkinFiles Wiki.jpg
</gallery>
If you did everything correctly, then the camouflage you loaded should be shown in the “User camouflages” list when you click it. Set the camouflage.

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="260px">
File:CustomSkins NewSkinDisplay Wiki.jpg
</gallery>

Camouflage creation
The creation of any camouflage begins with the creation of the example that was described above. Next, the example files are edited in any suitable graphical editor as an ordinary image. The important thing here is to preserve the initial title, since this makes it far easier for less experienced users to use the already finished camouflage. If you want to change the name of texture so don’t forget to change it in the configuration file “name_of_the_vehicle.blk”.
Principles of creation
When creating a camouflage scheme, authors are encouraged to adhere to the principles adopted in the game. Camouflages that do not comply with these rules will not be used in preparing content for the War Thunder Market.

*Selection of content for the market will not be included if the camouflage contains changes in the cockpit.
*Changing the texture of the engine flame on aircraft is not desirable and in most cases will lead to a rejection when selecting content for the market.
*Damages and chips of paint on _dmg textures should not at the borders of different sections of the DM model in the covering.
*The identification markings on aircraft of countries from the fascist/Nazi bloc should not contain prohibited symbols.
*For Italian aircraft it is recommended to use downloadable harmonised markings: (Click here to download the zip file).
*The markings indicating shot down aircraft as well as the personal emblems of the pilots should not contain prohibited symbols. It is recommended to use the uniform image standards adopted in the game.
*For German aircraft it is recommended not to use tail markings.

Aircraft camouflage
Aircraft camouflages can not be rotated or scaled that’s why in the example you will find the arrangement of the elements of the structure.

The example consists of the following files:

*vehicle_name.blk – a required file for defining the camouflage
*vehicle_name_с.tga – the camouflage itself
*vehicle_name_n.tga – camouflage normals
*vehicle-name_с_dmg.tga – damage mask for alterations after taking damage
*vehicle-name_n_dmg.tga – damage mask normals

The first two files are enough for the simplest camouflage, but then your camo will be swapped for the standard one created by the example when you take even the smallest hit. So it’s worth stocking up on patience and creating some truly impressive work.

Camouflage ground equipment
At the moment it is possible to create two types of camouflage for ground vehicles:

#Repeating camouflage - simple (monochrome, with spots, stripes) colouring, which can be scaled and rotated.
#Fixed camouflage - complex variable patterns on different parts of the vehicle in which it is also possible to add decals even without a background (camouflage) which will be on the vehicle at all times. Such camouflage can not be rotated or scaled.

Rules of fixed camouflage

*Will be used by the set_tex block in the .blk file (see the example below).
*The colour of the camouflage will be applied to the model by the mask of the alpha channel.
*Alpha channel: white - colour of the camouflage seen on the model, gray - translucent, black - colour will not be applied.
*The colour of the fixed camouflage "shades" the metallicity and changes the smoothness.
*The size of each side of the texture in pixels should correspond to the power of two (for example, 2048, 4096, 8192), the ratio between the sides should be the same as the original texture.

As a simple example we will create camouflage for the Chieftain Mk.10 with fixed decal in the form of an orange square. The layer will contain chieftain_mk_10_turret.tga texture. Its RGB and Alpha channels look like this:
<gallery widths="350" heights="350">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10RGB Wiki.png
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10Alpha Wiki.png
</gallery>
We draw a square in the same area on all channels. In the alpha channel, the remaining area needs to be filled with black.
<gallery widths="350" heights="350">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10RGBOrangeSq Wiki.png
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10AlphaOrangeSq Wiki.png
</gallery>
In the case of changes to only one texture, the blk file will look like this:

<code>
name:t="user"
set_tex{
from:t="chieftain_mk_10_turret_c*" //the name of the source texture
to:t="chieftain_mk_10_turret.tga" //the name of the changed texture
param:t="camo_skin_tex" //technical parameter
}
</code>

So the model will take the following form:
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10OrangeSq Wiki.png
</gallery>
Note that the rest of the texture with rust on the turret is not visible. This occured because the values of the alpha channel outside the square were equal to zero. Places with a gray alpha channel will be applied as translucent. The decal will overpaint the “split colour” places, change the metallicity and smoothness of the surface. Let’s open the uk_camo_very_dark_drab.tga file and draw black bars there (in the understanding of PBR "black" - it's not darker than 30; 30; 30 in RGB).
Important:

*This texture should have alpha channel, the smoothness of the coloured areas depends on it.
*The texture should be shaded.
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins RepetitiveCamoBlackBars Wiki.png|
</gallery>
The replacement of the repetitive camouflage file should be displayed in the blk file. For this it is required to add following block:
<code>
replace_tex{
from:t="uk_camo_very_dark_drab*" //old camouflage
to:t="uk_camo_very_dark_drab.tga" //new camouflage
}
</code>

As a result you will get a camouflage that can age (An aging mask will be applied) and after the destruction the model, will look correct.
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10OrangeSqBlackBars Wiki.png
</gallery>

By using set_tex you can paint the vehicle almost entirely as in the example of the camouflage “Berlin Brigade” for Chieftain Mk.10.
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10OrangeBerlinCamo Wiki.jpg
</gallery>
The file .blk describes the application of fixed camouflage to the model by a consistent reference to the involved textures. If a texture is mentioned in .blk file which is not in the archive, then such a camouflage is unlikely to be considered in the selection for the market. <!---link--->
<code>
name:t="user"
// Scalable camouflage
replace_tex{
from:t = "uk_camo_very_dark_drab*"
to:t = "uk_camo_light_mud_blue_black.tga*"
}
// Fixed camouflage
set_tex{
from:t="chieftain_mk_10_body_c*"
to:t="chieftain_mk_10_body_c.tga"
param:t="camo_skin_tex"
}
set_tex{
from:t="chieftain_mk_10_gun_c*"
to:t="chieftain_mk_10_gun_c.tga"
param:t="camo_skin_tex"
}
set_tex{
from:t="chieftain_mk_10_turret_c*"
to:t="chieftain_mk_10_turret_c.tga"
param:t="camo_skin_tex"
}
set_tex{
from:t="chieftain_mk_10_add_c*"
to:t="chieftain_mk_10_add.tga"
param:t="camo_skin_tex"
}

<br />
</code>
Pay attention to the alpha channel in the hull structure (the alpha channels of the remaining elements of fixed camouflage are similar).
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10HullAlpha Wiki.png
</gallery>
Due to such a complex structure, there is no "paint" on scratches and parts if chassis. The similar effect can be achieved by subtracting a metallic map from the white alpha channel. To get alpha channel masks and metallicity maps we recommend using the export function WTAssetViewer from the War Thunder CDK. <!---link--->

*Important! Using the replace_tex instead of set_tex for the fixed camouflage texture will result in the inability to apply any decal to such textures in the game and such creations will be automatically rejected by selecting the content for the War Thunder Market. <!--- link--->

Features of the application of camouflage by using set_tex:

*Set_tex is not intended for normal maps or AO (ambient occlusion).
*Transparency or incomplete coverage are allowed - for example to fix the decals. Then a scalable colour will be used in the missed areas.
*You can apply decals from the game to the model.
*Following destruction, the model will look correct.

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="260px">
File:CustomSkins CreateSampleFiles Wiki.jpg ‎
</gallery>

'Show Package Contents' there, then go to Contents → Resources → game → UserSkins.)

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="230px">
File:CustomSkins MovingCustomSkins Wiki.PNG ‎
</gallery>

Return to the client and update the list of available camouflages by pressing the corresponding button.

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="260px">
File:CustomSkins UpdateSkinFiles Wiki.jpg
</gallery>
If you did everything correctly, then the camouflage you loaded should be shown in the “User camouflages” list when you click it. Set the camouflage.

<gallery perrow="1" widths="810px" heights="260px">
File:CustomSkins NewSkinDisplay Wiki.jpg
</gallery>

<gallery widths="350" heights="350">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10RGB Wiki.png
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10Alpha Wiki.png
</gallery>
We draw a square in the same area on all channels. In the alpha channel, the remaining area needs to be filled with black.
<gallery widths="350" heights="350">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10RGBOrangeSq Wiki.png
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10AlphaOrangeSq Wiki.png
</gallery>
In the case of changes to only one texture, the blk file will look like this:

<code>
name:t="user"
set_tex{
from:t="chieftain_mk_10_turret_c*" //the name of the source texture
to:t="chieftain_mk_10_turret.tga" //the name of the changed texture
param:t="camo_skin_tex" //technical parameter
}
</code>

So the model will take the following form:
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10OrangeSq Wiki.png
</gallery>

<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins RepetitiveCamoBlackBars Wiki.png|
</gallery>
The replacement of the repetitive camouflage file should be displayed in the blk file. For this it is required to add following block:
<code>
replace_tex{
from:t="uk_camo_very_dark_drab*" //old camouflage
to:t="uk_camo_very_dark_drab.tga" //new camouflage
}
</code>

As a result you will get a camouflage that can age (An aging mask will be applied) and after the destruction the model, will look correct.
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10OrangeSqBlackBars Wiki.png
</gallery>

By using set_tex you can paint the vehicle almost entirely as in the example of the camouflage “Berlin Brigade” for Chieftain Mk.10.
<gallery widths="350" heights="200">
File:CustomSkins Chieftain10OrangeBerlinCamo Wiki.jpg
</gallery>
The file .blk describes the application of fixed camouflage to the model by a consistent reference to the involved textures. If a texture is mentioned in .blk file which is not in the archive, then such a camouflage is unlikely to be considered in the selection for the market. <!---link--->
<code>
name:t="user"
}

</code>
Pay attention to the alpha channel in the hull structure (the alpha channels of the remaining elements of fixed camouflage are similar).

While the MG 17s also can do some damage to biplanes, any aware fighter pilot will be able to move away from the gun sight and end up on the Do 17's tail, if solely using the machine guns. The MG 151 and 17s are clustered in the nose, however, and combined can ravage ground formations with light or medium armor. They must never be underestimated as an alternative to the Do 17 Z-7's bombs.

The Do 17 Z-7 is risky to use when making stealth approaches, particularly in the day, since the twin engines spew modest, but quite visible, white smoke at the higher altitudes. This makes hiding your presence hard enough, let alone your flight path. As a precaution, do what you can to gun it and make sure you are ahead of any interceptors so that your gunners can effectively defend the plane.

Avoid a head-on at all cost - it has nose armor and a 20 mm cannon which will shred any plane to bits. This plane cannot turn very well, if it is pursuing you, simply turn sharply to one direction. It is best to aim for the engines and not the cockpit. The nose has 58 mm curved armor; it would be difficult for bullets to go through and hit the crew.

* Horrible roll rate.
* Overall poor handling characteristics.
* Lousy energy retention.

Flight performance
<!-- Describe how the aircraft behaves in the air. Speed, manoeuvrability, acceleration and allowable loads - these are the most important characteristics of the vehicle. -->
Speed and acceleration are both decent. However, its manoeuvrability is a big weak spot. When turning, you can expect a relatively slow turn time, and the wings tend to rip off of in hard banking manoeuvres.
Immediately making a 2nd pass will generally be a bad idea, as it will attract a lot planes with ample opportunity to return fire.

The Do 17 Z-7's primary source of damage comes with its single 20 mm MG 151 cannon. While the MG 17s also can do some damage to biplanes, any aware fighter pilot will be able to move away from the gun sight and end up on the Do 17's tail, if solely using the machine guns. The MG 151 and 17s are clustered in the nose, however, and combined can ravage lightly armoured ground formations. They must never be underestimated as an alternative to the Do 17 Z-7's bombs.

The Do 17 Z-7 is risky to use when making stealth approaches, particularly in the day, since the twin engines spew modest, but quite visible, white smoke at the higher atltitudes. This makes hiding your presence hard enough, let alone your flight path. As a precaution, do what you can to gun it and make sure you are ahead of any interceptors so that your gunners can effectively defend the plane.

Counter-tactics
The best way to deal with this plane is to fly fast and aim for the engines. Don't tail right behind the plane because then the gunners will have an easy target. If tailing behind the plane, dip down a little bit, the dorsal gunner won't be able to hit the plane this way and the ventral gunner will be pointed down too much to do anything about it. At this battle rating, there are a lot of newer players, who most likely haven't put Crew XP into the gunners vitality. If the gunners are taken out, then the plane is a flying duck. Avoid a head-on at all cost - it has armour at the front and a 20 mm cannon which will shred any plane to bits. This plane cannot turn fight, if it's behind tailing the plane, then simply turn sharply to one direction. If in a bomber it's best to aim for the engines and not the cockpit. The cockpit has 58 mm of armour angled; it would be difficult for bullets to go through and snipe the pilot. It is highly recommended to also attack the wings when flying a plane with cannons: the wings are large, easy targets and the Do 17 Z-7, already not the most nimble plane, will not get very far with much control surface damage.

* Horrible roll rate.
* Overall poor handling characteristics.
* Lousy energy retention.
* Best performs as a Boom & Zoom aircraft, although its poor flight characteristics makes it inefficient at it.
* Defensive armament has poor coverage to fend of attacking enemies.
* Engine overheats, important to watch the engines temp and adjust when needed.

Immediately making a 2nd pass will generally be a bad idea, as it will attract a lot planes with ample opportunity to return fire.

The Do 17 Z-7's primary source of damage comes with its single 20 mm MG 151 cannon.

The Do 17 Z-7 is risky to use when making stealth approaches, particularly in the day, since the twin engines spew modest, but quite visible, white smoke.

* Horrible roll rate.
* Overall poor handling characteristics.
* Lousy energy retention.
* Best performs as a Boom & Zoom aircraft, although its poor flight characteristics makes it inefficient at it.
* Defensive armament has poor coverage to fend of attacking enemies.
* Engine overheats, important to watch the engines temp and adjust when needed.

The name is a rank rank German fighter Battle-rating. It was introduced in Update 1.39. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Wuerger (Shrike) was a single-seat, single-engine monoplane fighter used by the Luftwaffe in WWII. One of the best fighters of the time, it was widely used during the Second World War. A total of over 20,000 were produced, including some 6,000 fighter-bomber variants. The 190 remained in production from 1941 until the end of the war, going through multiple redesigns. The Fw 190 made a name for itself as a true Luftwaffe workhorse and was used in a wide variety of roles, including a high-altitude interceptor (especially the Fw 190 D), escort fighter, fighter-bomber and night fighter.

"Würger" is the German nickname of this beast of a plane. It can be translated as slayer, choker, or strangler. In that regard fits the English designation well too: "Butcher-bird"

The Fw 190A-1, as all the planes in this line, are some of the best Boom and Zoomers in the game and should be flown exclusively in this style. The performance at high speeds is excellent, as is their dive and zoom characteristics. Do not ever engage in a turn fight as a "furball" with superior turners such as the A6M2 will end badly. Instead fight mainly in the vertical. Try to have an altitude, or speed advantage over your opponents (by climbing to the side at the start of the battle and then enter the highest battle you see). It is still possible to subdue your opponent with the A-1 due to the fantastic roll rate of the "Wurger".

Unlike the later 190 line (A-8 and up), the A-1 through A-5 all possess higher turn capabilities than the rest of the line. The A-1 can, in general, out turn less manoeuvrable planes such as the LaGG-3. Still, it is not recommended to out-turn, as the A-1 will be placed with many higher-manoeuvring fighters.

While the Focke Wulf retains it dive abilities even without all upgrades, getting to a vantage point to utilize these strength can prove difficult. Therefore unlocks in the category "flight performance" are a must, especially those which grant increased climb rate (e.g. Engine, Compressor). New 20 mm belts are also a good choice, as the "Air targets" belt improves the damage significantly. "Stealth" belt for the 20 mm is also favorable due to the composition of the belt, consisting of 3/5 minengeschoß, and the lack of tracers make aiming easier by not notifying your enemy of your shots, keeping them calm. The 20 mm cannon upgrade is hardly worth though, it tends to run out of ammo before it can overheat, but they can reduce cannon spread. Different story for the 7 mm LMGs though. They should be a tertiary priority.

Armaments
The PAGENAME is armed with:

* 2 x 20 mm MG FF/M cannons, wing-mounted (60 rpg = 120 total)
* 2 x 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns, nose-mounted (900 rpg = 1,800 total)
* 2 x 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns, wing-mounted (1,000 rpg = 2,000 total)

Unlike the He 112 B-0 with 2 x MG FF cannons, the Fw 190 has 2 x MG FF/M cannons, which are identical except for the re-engineered shells and barrel for the MG FF/M. The "M" variant has access to the deadly minengeschoss shells (mine-shells) that can wreak havoc on most planes at the rank. However, keep in mind the brutally low velocity of the MG FF/M shells. Fire when within 400 m of your quarry.

The MG 17 LMGs are not effective against most planes; however, when equipped with Stealth belts these MGs can turn into powerful anti-ground destroyers. Armoured cars and AAA are great targets for the MGs. Maintain speed when ground-pounding, however, as an enemy fighter can blow you out of the air if you have no energy.

Tactics
<!--Specific methods of play in different situations, label the methods with pros and cons (if possible) based on vehicle's performances (i.e. Me 262 playing as a fighter or anti-bomber)-->
Watch your ammo count! Like the Spitfire Mk IIb, the Fw 190 A-1 has only 60 rpg. The lower fire rate of the MG FF/M cannons can work in your favour, however. When playing in Arcade, you can go bomber hunting, as the minengeschoß will make short work of the bombers. As you can reload while in the air, bomber hunting is a great tactic.

In the defensive, you can often just dive away from planes, such as Spitfires and La-5s, but you need to be at a decent altitude to gain top speed, so do not be to quick to dive after an enemy, if they fly below your plane. Unless you are higher then everybody else, or alone. Just be sure then to have the time to regain the lost altitude. The Fw 190 A-1's superb roll rate also allows for going on a horizontal evasive.

In a dive the 190 can, due its short wings, pull quite some stunts to either lose the hunter, or even make him loose his own wings!

Sharp rolling scissors can be effective. This is favourable strategy against La-5s, Yaks & Spitfires who have due their low wingloading (and partly wooden wings for the Russians), less resistance against high G manoeuvres. Again be sure to regain your energy by a zoom-climb. Just look out while doing so, many pilots die as they do not notice a second enemy aircraft approaching. German proverb:"Wenn Zwei sich streiten, freut sich der Dritte." ~ "When two quarrel, the third will reap the success." Of course this could also be you.

Specific enemies worth noting
<!--Some concerning vehicles to worry about if playing this plane. (i.e. Japanese fighters will out turn you)-->
When flying this plane, a common foe will be Spitfires due to the fact that they can climb higher than you and also out turn you by a significant margin. However, as they have weaker wings, a dive with rolls to change direction will send them crashing to their deaths.
Pros:

* Plenty of LMG ammo
* Great top speed
* Great energy retention & zoom-climbs
* Great high-speed manoeuvrability
* Great roll rate
* Decent steady climb rate
* One of the more agile 190s
* Cannons are more than enough against all fighters given Air targets belts
* Excellent flaps

Cons:

* Low ammo for cannons
* No external payloads for use against ground forces
* MG FF/M inferior to MG 151/20
* Less durable than later Fw 190s
* Elevator is not too responsive, takes time to get used to it
* Poor stall control; a problem which persists in all 190s
* Poor turn rate

Design
The Focke Wulf Fw 190 was a highly advanced aircraft for its time and was given the nickname 'Würger' (Shrike), it was nicknamed "The Butcher Bird" because of its killing ability. The aircraft had speed and durability as its main strengths. The aircraft was all metal with a stressed all-duralumin skin.

Development
The Fw 190 was conceived in 1937 , the first prototype flew in June 1939. The undercarriage was wide-tracked, which gave the Fw 190 much greater stability compared to the Bf 109 and allowed it to take off and land on runways that other German fighters such as the Bf 109 found difficult. The first tests of the aircraft were in 1940 and few problems were discovered. Focke-Wulf completed 102 190 A-1s at the Bremen and Marienburg factories between June and October 1941. The previous A-0 was a production test run and saw no front-line fighting.

Combat usage
The A-1 series was the first of the Fw 190s to be used in active combat sorties. It first went into battle in the summer of 1941. The first combat model had a top speed of 388 mph from its 1600 hp engine. The first record of combat was with Spitfires in June 1941 where the Fw 190 performed well though the pilots complained of a lack of firepower. This criticism led to the Mk II version, which had two wing-mounted synchronised 20 mm cannons and two MG 17 guns. The Mk II version had a top speed of 382 mph. This armament and speed made it a match for the Mk V Spitfire that was in service then.

Over the channel and after the battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe faced harassment in form of "Circus Operations".
Continuous attacks by daylight bombers (Bristol Blenheim), heavily guarded by fighter squadrons flying Spitfire V. These were not strategical, or even tactical assaults, but distractions, to keep German forces bound to the Western front, giving the Eastern front a little more freedom. They were however ineffective and required only little countermeasures.

The same tactics used by the British six months earlier were now adopted by the Germans.

One of these squadrons facing this flying circus was JagdGeschwader 26 equipped with Bf 109 F-4 and the new Fw 190 A-1.

In July 1941, parts of JG26 were moved to Le Bourget. Here they were the first to be trained on the Focke Wulf 190 A-1. Following August, the 6. squadron of Gruppe II was equipped entirely with the new fighter and until September the entire group was refitted. Still Bf 109F-4 remained in service with them and ultimately the Messerschmitt would stick as the units fighter type. They remained at the channel coast until the end of year. With 79 aerial victories, but only 24 total losses, the Fw 190 gained its first prestige.
Immediately making a 2nd pass will generally be a bad idea, as it will attract a lot planes with ample opportunity to return fire.

The Do 17 Z-7's primary source of damage comes with its single 20 mm MG 151 cannon. While the MG 17s also can do some damage to biplanes, any aware fighter pilot will be able to move away from the gun sight and end up on the Do 17's tail, if solely using the machine guns. The MG 151 and 17s are clustered in the nose, however, and combined can ravage tightly-clustered ground formations of many armor thicknesses. They must never be underestimated as an alternative to the Do 17 Z-7's bombs.

The Do 17 Z-7 is risky to use when making stealth approaches, particularly in the day, since the twin engines spew modest, but quite visible, white smoke.

* Horrible roll rate.
* Overall poor handling characteristics.
* Lousy energy retention.
* Best performs as a Boom & Zoom aircraft, although its poor flight characteristics makes it inefficient at it.
* Defensive armament has poor coverage to fend of attacking enemies.
* Engine overheats, important to watch the engines temp and adjust when needed.

The Do 17 Z-7 was a model of the Do 17Z, the main variant of the Dornier Do 17. The Do 17, dubbed the "Fliegender Bleistift" (German for "flying pencil") was designed in the early '30s and was mainly used against Poland, England, France and the Netherlands. It was produced by Claudius Dornier's company, Dornier Flugzeugwerke. Only a few Do 17s remain today, none of which are of the Z-7 model. In total there were 2,139 built. Other countries that used the Do 17 were Yugoslavia, Finland, and Spain.

The clustered three-machine gun, single-cannon configuration the Z-7 boasted was known as "Kaus I" ("screech owl").

Do 17 production ended in 1940, supplanted by the Ju 88 and succeeded by the similar, but more powerful, Do 217.
