The AN/VPS-2 is an American ground based target tracking radar. In-game it is found as the only radar on the M163.

General info / usage
<!-- Tell us about the tactical and technical characteristics of the radar. Describe its distinctive features, tactics of usage against the main opponents. -->

The AN/VPS-2 is only a tracking radar, this means it can lock onto targets and provide a firing lead indicator, but cannot detect targets and place them on the radar display. As the AN/VPS-2 is the only radar on the M163 this means that the M163 has no search capability, the player must go into their sight, place the crosshairs over a target and then lock on. Once locked on, the AN/VPS-2 can track a target through 360°, out to a maximum range of 7 km.

Comparison with analogues
<!-- Give a comparative description of similar or related radars. -->

Compared to other tracking radars the AN/VPS-2 has an poor maximum range of only 7 km (not as bad as the 3JB10), the minimum range is decent at only 100 m. The minimum relative speed is about average. Being able to track targets through 360 degrees once locked on is an advantage compared to other radars.

Pros and cons
<!-- Summarise and briefly evaluate the radar in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark pros and cons as a list. -->

Pros:

* Can track targets through a full 360 degrees
* Decent minimum range

Cons:

* Poor maximum range
* Requires use of scope to tock on to targets

History
<!-- Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of this radar. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the radar and adding a block "/ History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(radar-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article. -->

The AN/VPS-2 is a small range-only radar developed in America. In reality the gunner of the vehicle would have to keep their scope over the target continuously; the radar would then feed ranging information into a computer which would then calculate the lead required to hit the target.

The Roland SAM was a project between Germany and France following the 1963 Elysée treaty. The goal was to create an all-weather capable, surface-to-air missile system to defend mobile units and important facilities like airfields against low flying aircraft. Development began in 1964 with the foundation of the Euromissile company by Aérospatiale and MBB and the first prototype made a guided launch in June 1968. The development was split between Aérospatiale, who would develop the Roland 1, and MBB who were to develop the all-weather capable Roland 2. The entire process however took longer than expected and was far more expensive than anticipated, especially due to the complexity of the system and the development of additional protection against electric interference.

The first Roland 1 units entered service with the French army in 1977 while the German army would receive their first Roland 2 in 1978 with France following in 1981. The last Roland systems of the German army were taken out of service in 2005 and are being replaced by Systems such as Ozelot.

Besides being in service with Germany and France, the Roland SAM was exported to many other nations, including the USA, where it became one of very few foreign SAM systems. Among the other nations that used the Roland SAM are Argentina and Iraq who were the only nations to use it in active combat. All in all, Roland missiles scored 3 confirmed kills (one British Sea Harrier downed by Argentine forces during the Falkland War, one RAF Tornado downed by Iraqi forces during the Gulf war, and a USAF A-10 Thunderbolt, also shot down by Iraqi troops during the same war). However, the suspected number of destroyed aircraft might be twice as high (one Sea Harrier (Argentina), one F-4 Phantom, one F-5 Tiger, two Tornados, and one A-10 Thunderbolt (Iraq)).
History
The M61 Vulcan is a 20mm rotary cannon that was developed in United States after World War II. Based on the American Civil War-era Gatling Gun, the M61 entered service in 1959 and has since become the primary cannon weapon of US fighter jets from the Vietnam War until the adoption of F-35 Lightning II and stills sees service on "Teen series" of fighter jets and the F-22 Raptor. Based on combat experience the M61 would be upgraded to the M61A1 which introduced a linkless feeding system to reduce malfunctions.

Japan, constitutionally forbidden from having a military after World War II, did not have much of a domestic aircraft industry to call upon when regional politics in Asia persuaded the United States to allow Japan a local defense force guard their home islands. Thus the nascent Japanese Air Self-Defense Force relied primarily on the United States as a source of aircraft in its early years with the first aircraft being imported and knock-down kits of the North American F-86F-30. However, it was not long before Mitsubishi Heavy Industries began licensed production of the F-86 series, but the relationship between the United States and Japan remained strong and Japan continued licensing American aircraft designs including the cannons.

In 1967, Japan adopted the F-104J a licensed production of the American F-104 Starfighter and included license production of the M61 Vulcan the Starfighter was equipped with. The JM61 was thus entered production in Japan and the JM61A1 began production with the F-4EJ Phantom II in 1971. As Japan continued to both license American designs such as the the F-15 Eagle (as the F-15J) or the F-16 Fighting Falcon (As the Mitsubishi F-2) and produce their own designs like T-2 and F-1 they would continue to the JM61A1 as their cannon of choice into the twenty-first century.

Pros:

* has access to AGM-65 Mavericks at a relatively low BR
* has the strongest engine among all skyhawks ingame
* similarly to other israeli aircraft, has access to highly mixed loadouts
* can carry the aim9D while most aircraft at the A-4N's BR range can only carry aim9Bs and equivelants
* hard hitting DEFA 553 cannons with a lot of ammunition
* excelent roll rate and turn rate
* 60 countermeasure charges
* tailhook allows for landing on aircraft carriers

Cons:

* rips very easily on high G turns
* frequent uptieres to 9.7/10.0 due to premium aircraft influx
* no CCIP for any weapon
* ground attack radar is not implemented ingame
* DEFA 553 cannon's ammunition is rather low velocity and harder to hit than most guns
* very unresponsive when carrying heavy loadouts
* it can act as a fighter, but will perform poorly against similar BR aircraft and even worse against higher BR aircraft
* you will often be forced to take the fighter role as the competition on the bases on this BR is very rampant

* 60 countermeasure charges
* tailhook allows for landing on aircraft carriers

*

* you will often be forced to take the fighter role as the competition on the bases on this BR is very rampant

;Arcade Battles

The PAGENAME does not have any additional armaments to attack other vehicles or protect itself, limiting its offensive ability towards even slightly-armoured targets. Due to this, moving any distance from the spawn point will result in death due to the thin armour and increased visibility, due to vehicle markers, making you an easy target. Both the Roland 1 and Roland 3 SAMs have a maximum speed of 900 m/s, with payloads of 3.3 kg and 4.45 kg of Composition B respectably, more than enough to deal with the only aircraft type (helicopters) it will encounter in this game mode. Moving alongside allies or waiting in or near spawn areas - where you have the best view of the sky - will be rewarding as when engaging medium to heavily armoured units, the explosive mass of the missiles will be most useful in destroying or disabling targets, requiring knowledge of vulnerable spots on enemy vehicles to deliver a killing blow. Due to the large explosive mass of both missiles, it can destroy light targets with overpressure.

Pros and cons
Pros:

* Has Roland 3 missiles as a tier 2 modification, increasing the vehicle's offensive range to 8.5 km
* Roland 1 and Roland 3 missiles are reactive and manoeuvrable
* Active radar system with a scan range of 15 km
* Slightly higher-than-average max speed (70 km/h)
* Autoloader with 5 second reload
* Roland SAMs maintain their max speed up untill their respective max range, and do not deccelerate like other SAMs

Cons:

* Significantly lower missile velocity compared to the ADATS (1200 m/s) and Stormer HVM (1400 m/s)
* Only two missiles available before having to reload
* Lack of additional armament for close-range or armoured targets
