Description

The Type 2 13 mm swivel machine gun was a Japanese Navy-adopted MG131 produced under license. As a result of the original electric fuse not being domestically produced and being converted to an impact fuse, it could not be converted into a fixed nose gun with an electric tuning device and was used only as a swivel machine gun.

History

The first belt-fed flexible weapon of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, the Type 2 is licensed copy of the German MG 131. Like the MG 131 it was based on, it is one of the lightest heavy caliber machine guns of the war. It uses the original MG 131's percussion-ignition as it was believed the electronic-ignition system found on later MG 131s wouldn't be reliable in the tropical Pacific Theatre. The Type 2 is found on the B7A2 Ryusei Torpedo/Dive Bomber, Aichi E16A Zuiun float-plane, the A6M5 Hei Zero fighter, G4M1 "Betty" medium bomber, B6N Tenzan Torpedo Bomber, and the P1Y1 Ginga attack bomber.
